Excellent. It would be nice to have another writer at least half-time assigned to produce these types of articles on a regular basis for all of NDSU's sports teams. It's a damn shame they don't. Somehow the rag in Grand Forks is able to keep several people busy covering the local school up there. Again, it's a damn shame IMHO. There's a lot of good stories to tell, they just need to be discovered and documented.

Heh, your post reminded me of a mini-controversy when the guy behind d2football.com made a public claim that the Fargo Forum had a secret deal with NDSU as part of their media contract that required them to run x% of their sports stories on NDSU athletics and that, as a result, the Fargo Forum was looked down on by other newspapers.

Anyway, To the Way-Back Machine for some track smack!

Nice warm day in Fargo, but that wind can't be good for javelin throws or pole vaulting or running!

No it is not, especially for Goodman. But the team will still prevail. Others will step up and they will get it done!

It looks like Maddie McClellan crushed the 3000m steeplechase record - and Amy Thorne did too. I think they are #1 and #2 all-time now in that event for NDSU. If the meet results are right, the NDSU women are up by 28.5 and I'm guessing that they'll need all of that lead to hold off South Dakota since Antoinette Goodman is out.

The men are up by 32 and that lead would seem to be a little more secure.

Slight correction, here are the top 3 in the Steeplechase for NDSU women. Amy Jo ran a slightly better time at the Drake Relays two weeks ago, then in the Summit L. Championships. Both Maddie and Amy Jo ran terrific races, both will get another shot at the NCAA West Regionals. Good for them.

1. Maddie McClellan . . . . . . 10:19.29 . . . 2012 (Summit League Championships)
2. Courtney Christensen . . . 10:23.28 . . . 2003 (NCAA, Div II)
3. Amy Jo Thorne. . . . . . . . 10:28.48 . . . 2012 (Drake Relays)

As for the Summit Championship ... if the results of Friday's preliminaries are an indicator, South Dakota will be a formidable challenge to the NDSU women, but NDSU had more people turning in the best times than did South Dakota. South Dakota, however, had quite a few women - sometimes 2-3 in an event - that had the second to fifth best times in the prelims - in short, where NDSU had 1 that maybe was the best, South Dakota had 2 or 3 that were not far behind.

We have one heck of a track program at NDSU!!

Yes indeed, NDSU does have two great track programs - men and women.

Women's side: they won the indoor conf title so one would expect them to do well outdoor, but they also lost their best 100m and 200m athlete, who also ran on a couple relay. Yet the women stepped up and still won. Not sure what is more impressive, the talent or the will to do their best.

Men's side: they did NOT win the indoor title so one might expect them to have tough outdoor competition, yet they won big. Many of the guys stepped up. I was surprised at the 1500 and 800 times. Must have been tactical races that turned into kickers races, and NDSU did not do as well as I would have thought. I would guess Heppner got boxed in (800m), since he has run several seconds faster than he did - (I did not see the race). W. Leutz's decathlon win perhaps epitomized the Bison effort ... back and forth with the guy from S. Utah ... but Leutzy kept at it and got it done.
