I found this interesting.
Impressed with Trevor Barry's showing at the NDSU-UND-SDSU meet last Friday, and the comment from BadlandBison, I compared the two schools. Dickinson State does not get the press or attention as NDSU does, but they have an impressive tradition.

Makes a guy wonder how they recruit world class athletes to a small school in western ND. I grew up near Dickinson so I know the area.
After the fake diploma ordeal lately it got me wondering about their sports teams and if there could be some funny business taking place.

They were being paid academic scholarships for playing sports after having their entire tuition waived under global awareness and cultural diversity tuition waivers.

"DSU used one fund to pay Roughrider Scholarships in the 2009-2011
biennium. Based on our review of this fund, it appears awards were
made to over 370 recipients in the biennium. Based on our analysis of
the awards made by DSU, we concluded approximately 87% of the
$350,000 was awarded to students involved in athletics or rodeo."

"In a review of selected Roughrider Scholarship recipients, we identified
DSU made awards to students which were inconsistent with the
established guidelines for the scholarship."

"For example, one recipient
received a $4,000 Roughrider Scholarship ($2,000 per semester). The
guidelines identify a maximum award of $1,000 ($500 per semester)."

"According to the guidelines of the Roughrider Scholarship, the
scholarships were available for high school graduates and community
college transfer students enrolling at DSU. We identified awards made
to various individuals who were not meeting this requirement."

"Cultural Diversity Tuition Waivers: 100% and 75% cultural tuition
waivers appear to be made available exclusively to student athletes."

"Global Awareness Tuition Waivers: 100% global tuition waivers
appear to be made available exclusively to student athletes."

Twelve pages of this report are dedicated solely to misuse of waivers and scholarships.

That is straight from the auditor report. They were NAIA Ohio State.

I can see that the records are similar, but there is no comparison to these programs. DSU
goes out and gets 4 hired guns from the Caribbean and that is their entire team. The Bison would smoke them in head to head competition as well as in conference competition. Oh
and i am not real impressed with the whole cheater thing either.

Something is fishy when DSU has Ramon Miller on their team. He won a Silver Medal in the last Olympics for the Bahamas. It cool that talent is in North Dakota.

No DSU is not on NDSU's level but lets not disregard the programs success completely. They have been successful in NAIA and their conference in Track and field since the 60's long before they recuited the Bahamas. Louis Clarks 13.6 and 50.7 hurdle marks are from the early 70's! A guy by the name of Whiting was running sub 49 quarters in the mid 60's for the then called Savages!... I do agree that the recent mess there need to be cleaned up!

Derrick Atkins who went to DSU won a silver in the 100 at the Worlds in 07. Trevor Barry from DSU took bronze at last years Worlds in the High Jump.

I'd have liked to see their 4x400 relay team - holy cow.
