Consider him there.

I think the key word is Wish. I see him going else where since he will have his pick of where he wants to go.

Leingang broke the Bismarck community Bowl record yesterday in the Denton Relays running 4:12 and change in the 1600 meters! Wouldnt be suprised to see him go around 4:07 this year.

Great conditions yesterday...gonna be tough to go much better than that without competition. Hope he does! It will be fun to see him nationally a little later...sub 4:00 within 12 months is a possibility???

A little off topic but what is the point of 1600m and 3200m in high school when college and international competition is 1500m, 3000m or 5000m?
Also, is the "two mile" really exactly 2 miles or 3218.688 Meters? If it is why a two mile rather than 5000m or 3000m? Kind of confusing.

same reason rest of the world is the metric system and america is not. we do what we want when we want!!

I was confused when ND High School switched to metric! We ran the 100 yard dash, the 220, the 440 also known as the quarter, the 880 or the half, and so on...Im sure I was not alone!...Anyway the two mile relay is no more. The official term is 4x800 meter relay, or the 3200 meter relay? Depends on who you ask!

For what it is worth ... it is not correct to equate the 2-mile with the 3200 meters (or mile with the 1600meters). The metric distances (400 meters versus 440 yards, 800 meters, versus 880 yards) are all a bit shorter than the english track distances, so the metric times will be slightly faster.

Here are the approximate conversion rates:
880 yards (1/2 mile) ... subtract 0.7 seconds to get an equivalent 800 meter time (for the shorter metric distance.)
Mile ... subtract 1.6 seconds to get an equivalent 1600 meter time.
2-mile ... subtract 3.5 seconds to get an equivalent 3200 meter time.

If you take Brian MacLarens 1966 time of 1:50.10 in the 880 yards (at NDSU) and convert it, this is about a 1:49.4 800 meters, which would be #4 on NDSU's all time list.

I think the 1500 meters that is standard today is a product of France and Germany (Europe in general) converting to the metric system. I believe they used 500 meter tracks for awhile.

Jake ran the North Dakota all-time best for high school boys in the 1600m yesterday.
www.usatf.org/Events---Calendar/2012/U-S--Olympic-Team-Trials-TF/Results.aspx

Jake was (apparently) invited to the Olympic Trials to run in the Boy's Elite Mile. He ran a 4:10.60 mile yesterday. The 1600m is a bit shorter than a mile, so he had to pass the 1600m mark on his way to running the mile. Using a computer program to do the conversion, he passed the 1600m mark at 4:09.14. That is an all-time best for a North Dakota high school athlete in the 1600m.

According to Zittleman's All-time best charts, the previous best was Cory Ihmels 4:09.54 from 1992.

Jake's got another year left at Bismarck. It will be interesting to see what happens next track season if he does not get injured. I think he has a good shot at adding the 800m mark to his state record cache since he has already run a 1:53 something. Very talented young man. And congratulations to Darrell Anderson, his coach - a former Bison - who has done a fantastic job of building up the distance runner program at Bismarck over the last 30 years.

I'll bet it was difficult training for Jake to train in June with the high school track season over. I wonder if he trained alone - that is hard since people usually work harder when they have people to train with.

Regardless, congratulations to Jake. Lot of us out here cheering you on.

This kids impressive. He has the type of talent to own the record books. I hope he stays in state and becomes a star. I love keeping the mega talented in state. He could help kick off the new track and field complex in grand fashion.

I know there were a stack of really talented distance runners at Fargo South when I was there, and they were highly rated nationally as a team, wish I knew how they stacked up individually. I seem to remember a couple of them beating 2 miles in the nine minute run but I doubt any of those times were official.

Jake already is a star. I'm not sure, but I believe that he transfered to Bismarck from Minnesota (Minneapolis) prior to high school which would mean his ties to North Dakota aren't as deep as we might hope. He is a top 5 distance runner in the nation and will have choices such as Stanford, Oregon, Oklahoma State, Florida and other top distance programs in the Nation. Also, I believe that Jake's best open 800 is 1:56 and some change. I'm not saying he won't go faster, but his racing style isn't all that conducive running a 1:53.

Thanks for the correction HS Track Coach ... I think you are right on the time (and that I erred above).

As for top distance programs, this changes over time, and I am not always current, but Arkansas, Wisconsin, and Oregon strike me as being some of the better ones on the men's side (historically). The programs you mention might be better, I cannot say. Given Colorado's strong showing in the Olympic Trials - 2 of the 3 collegiate athletes that made the Olympics in T&F were Colorado's Steeplechasers, and Oregon's they might be the best programs at present on the women's side.

Jake crushed the competition in the 5k at the New Balance Nationals. Won by 17 seconds. Best time by far this year. 14:11.61
Would be an NDSU record. Future is very bright for Jake. He should do awesome at Oregon.
