I hope that NDSU honors him in a very special way.

If we could get some type of statue of him in front of the Fargodome, I'd be all for it.

The best pure football coach (football mind) that has ever been at NDSU.

No Erhardt...no dynasty.

Tough loss for the Bison family.

Ron Erhardt was not only an NDSU great, but a Mandan great too - he was a QB on two state championship football teams at Mandan High. Glad he got to see NDSU win another championship but wish he could have seen many more.

Helped make NDSU into the NDSU we all know and love. Hopefully he enjoyed seeing NDSU snag one last title before he left.

As a head coach at NDSU for 7 years, he had a record of 67-7-1. He won 2 conference titles and 2 national championships as an assistant coach, and 6 conference titles and 2 national championships as a head coach. He would also serve as Athletic Director. He would then go on to be an offensive coordinator for the Patriots, Giants, and Jets. He won 2 Super Bowls with the Giants. Quite a career. As good of a coach as he was, I am sure he was even a better man. He definitely was a big reason Bison football is where it is at today. I am glad he got to see them win another title. Once a Bison, Always a Bison. Here's to you Coach Erhardt.

Seriously, since no one wants to pay the naming fees for the Fargodome,

why doesn't NDSU start referring to the Dome as...

Ron Erhardt Field or

Ron Erhardt Field at the Fargodome.

Ron Erhardt Field at the MudraDome. Make it happen.

Pretty sure Gate City just bought the naming right to the field when they sprung for a big part of the turf replacement.

I knew he had some medical issues. This really hurts.

I thought I read somewhere that he never lost to the same team twice.

That is true in regards to his Bison teams. 3 out of 7 losses and his only tie were to non-conference opponents.

I heard about this story on ESPN radio this afternoon although they only recapped his NFL career as a head coach and coordinator.

A legend for sure. He coached my friend's dad at New England St. Marys back in the day. Wikipedia has a decent write up ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Erhardt

Heh, my Dad played on a HS team (Bowman) that went up against Coach Erhardt and New England St. Mary's back in the day. Didn't turn out so well for Bowman.

Teriffic career. I hope he was able to enjoy his golden years looking back on all that he accomplished.

A nice little obituary in this weeks SI. It mentions Erhardt winning two small college national championships at NDSU before moving on to the NFL. SI usually spells out the name of universities unless they expect everyone will recognize the name, so that was interesting to see also.

The man was the OC for the Giants in one of their Super Bowl wins. Best pure football mind that's been at NDSU. RIP Coach

Thanks Neil and TAILG8R

Speaking purely from an NDSU perspective (I remember him working with Parcels....), I think some clasic Elton John is in order:

"And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a kid
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did"
