The Bison play at UMKC tonight at 7. NDSU 15-8, 8-5 conf defeated the Roos 55-54 on January 12th. UMKC is 9-16 and 3-10 in the conference. The game will probably be closer than you'd expect but the Herd will pull out a close one. Should be a decent showing of Bison fans, myself included. Go Bison!!

After a hard fought loss to ORU at home, this team needs a confidence boost tonight. I don't think the Roo's have what it takes to beat us tonight. Bison win by 15.

This is one of those defining moments of the season where the last two years we have fell short. Tough loss at home to ORU and now a 3 game road trip against the two bottom feeders in the conference and then head to SDSU mid next week. If we can cruise to a couple easy wins this weekend and head into Brookings with our swagger back it could be a huge momementum builder heading into the final stretch of the season and the Summit league tourney. A loss tonight or Saturday would crush this teams confidence and would really kill my hopes of making a run at the title. That being said, I think the Summit League tourney is the light starting to shine at the end of the tunnel for this season for these players and they come out ready. Bison by 20 with big nights from Braun and Bjorklund.

Is this your first GDT?? If so, we're doomed. :D

I do not expect a win tonight guys. For some reason I feel tonight we're going to completely shit it down our legs. We did that last year in this same game. I don't know why, but I'm expecting a loss tonight.

I'm sorry, but that's just how I feel. We've always struggled on the road in conference, even in 08-09 we won a lot of very close road games. besides that year, we've been TERRIBLE on the road in the Summit.

Bison will lose by 6.

thanks for your concern...but, SDSU closed to within 10 at the half in Vermillion: USD 34, SDSU 24.
USD eating some clock up like SUU did in Brookings and SDSU shooting very poorly (but as the half approaching, started improving). SDSU 0-8 from outside the arc. Ouch. But, we're adjusting.

Absolutely ridiculous. I have been quietly wondering for a while but there's a part of me that feels like some of these players have a sense of entitlement. I don'tknow how many times they have started a game this year and got their ass kicked out of the only to have to play catch up throughout the rest of the game.

Be ready to play the game. for crying out loud.

I used to be a defender of this team in past discussions about how we've "fallen", but I gotta say, in the past 4 weeks, we've been slowly getting worse. This is about the WORST possible time of the season to be getting really bad. This is getting BAD.

So what did UMKC coach say about us after we beat them in Fargo? I've heard it mentioned a few times. Even that didn't get us to come out ready I guess. Unrelated to just this one game, here's a list of things I can think of that need to be fixed with the basketball program in my opinion.

1) BSA remodel. Obvious.
2) New conference. We lost to this team fair and square. They were way better than us. Our future goal should be to never play in this type of a gym again. Beg, borrow, and steal to get into the MVC.
3) GoBison All Access needs to improve. #2 may help this. Some type of NDSU weekly TV show outside of football that includes hoops.
4) At least having the option to switch to a zone once in awhile. I love that our calling card is man to man, and that its an identity for us, but I'd love to have the option to mix the zone in once in awhile.
5) I'd love to see us dictate the tempo more often. We have two great #5s for this conference, and too many times in games we take them out to match up better with the other team, unclog the lane, or whatever. This should be an advantage for us, let's not waste these two post player's careers adjusting to other teams.

Going into the year, we knew we'd have some really frustrating times and some good times with this young, talented team. It's just tough to actually live through the ups and downs. I'm absolutely not giving up on this team, we just need to get our best rotation set and start peaking here really soon or we'll be lucky to even make the semis in the tourney.

3) OMG Yes....tonight was really bad. I emailed and complained.
4) OMG Yes...if you are a one trick pony someone is gonne take you down. ive said this here before...as a coach myself, you have to make adjustments if something isnt working. Calling card or not. The definition of insanity is doing the same things over and over and expecting different results. That's on the coaching staff.

Maybe you missed this part "Unrelated to just this one game." Or this part: "We lost to this team fair and square. They were way better than us."

You've become pretty predictable showing up after each hoops loss trying to find something wrong with the Bison basketball crowd though. I'm a Bison fan. Not a Bison basketball fan, not a Bison football fan. I like all Bison teams.

And lack of effort, coaching, etc.
That was one of the worst all around performances I've seen. We were never in the game. I watched this game with an impartial KU fan and his analysis was "disheartening" and "Not encouraging regardless of how the season has gone so far". Some other observations he made:

1) Complete lack of effort and hustle tonight
2) Defensively we are timid and soft and don't move our feet. No help defense.
3) Why doesn't your coach put in your bigs? Do you have more than 1 big man?
4) Why doesn't your coach put in both bigs at the same time?
5) What offense are you running?
6) Why do your guards feel like they need to be dribbling in one spot?
7) Your offense never got inside the free throw line the entire possession
8) Why is your free throw shooting so poor?
9) How can you be getting outplayed so bad? Did the Bison have a game last night?
10) UMKC is by far more agressive, more disciplined and runs an inside-out offense. Their defense is completely pushing your guards out of your offense.
11) Why are you playing your 6'7" kid at the point?
12) Who's the leader on the team?

And there were several more. I'm using his analysis and not mine because mine would be a lot worse.
We got our asses handed to us and it was bad. There's something not quite right with this team internally....I can't put my finger on it but I sensed it watching the team and coaches during timeouts, etc

IMHO, these are the frustrating points of this team.

1)This team, along with the coaching staff, absolutely does not know how to get up for games and be ready at tipoff and throughout the flow of the game. It's like they pick and choose the moments they want to play throughout the game. How many more times are we going to come out and get our ass kicked in the first 5-10 minutes? And I'm not talking about getting blown out, I'm also talking about taking control of the game right away against inferior teams and controlling the game. This team reminds me of the heavyweight fighter that steps in the ring and has to take a few jabs and uppercuts before they are ready to play. Sometimes they recover. Sometimes they don't.

2)I really do think they play with a sense of entitlement. The football team was good, they knew they were good, and they played like they were good and handld business. The football team is young too. The basketball team thinks they are good, thinks they can turn it on when they need to, and before they know it they are down by 20 points and getting their ass kicked by the worst team in the conference. I wonder how much talking Braun and Hale did to UMKC tonight when they were getting their ass kicked?

We just got our ass kicked by the worst team in the conference. That's something to really think about.

It's a tough assessment considering Kansas is one of the best coached teams in the country. They struggle at times and piss games away (like Missouri), but you will never see that team play with a lack of effort, heart, desire, or discipline. Self simply doesn't put up with it. Ironic as a diehard Ku fan as well I find myself asking alot fo those same questions, specifically why the bigs cannot play together.

There is no reason IMHO why Bjorklund and Aaberg cannot play together at the same time.

Seriously, read the post again....slowly. I tried to make it obvious that the post was about the team in general and not about this one game, specifically pointing that out. I just didn't want to create another 'here's what's wrong with the basketball program thread.'

I'll add a 6) Stop with the 'win at home, split the conference games on the road' mantra. This isn't the ACC. When we're playing teams like UMKC/USD in a road trip we should sweep those two games on the road. One game at a time, put all your energy and focus in that one game, and expect to win them all. *

* Note, I'm not talking about just this one game. I'm talking about what I'd personally like to see changed with this basketball program.

Obviously not, considering all our talent are sophomores or younger. Considering your confusing "new basketball arena = wins, and new basketball arena = betterl players" I won't hold much thought.

I support those in section 21 (mainly Bisonguy1 and the two California dimes that sit a few rows in front of him) who actually stand up and make some noise. I wish section 21 could rid itself of the famed knitters such as CAS and TransAm who spend the majority of the game posting on bisonville about how they could call a better game than Vigen.

With all that said, I have to agree with CAS. This team has absolutely NO talent on it.

This is where you are wrong. This team has no heart at times. If they had no talent, they would not have won 15 games. They certainly did not win 15 games by outcoaching, and outhustling their way to wins.

Talnet is the only thing this team does have, and it's pissing that right down the toilet.

The BSA has nothing to do with this loss, we played poorly and got our ass kicked. End of story. It was completely unacceptable, it was the worst loss of the season.

LA was really off his game, we need him to play well..especially on the road. But really some of this was just effort, UMKC wanted it more and it showed all game long. Not sure if it was just one of those nights or what happened.

CAS actually brought those thoughts to the board after the Moorhead loss but he was told that game didnt mean anything.

Let's be clear about what CAS said after the MSUM game that other Bison fans took exception to.

"There is another thread titled embarrassing--nothin to do with NDSU MBB, but point is same. Join the two--and this loss is yet another reason I will never be a fan of what is loser NDSU MBB at NDSU for as long as I have known!"

Which CAS subsequently and in my mind impressively apologized for and then was apparently going to make a conscious effort to support and follow the Bison hoops team (which wasn't necessary, but was a nice gesture). He seemed to be doing great for awhile even attending the UND game and one other game, but now the perception is that he is back to coming around after a Bison hoops loss to remind everyone how he told the Bison basketball crew this team stinks, and how the Bison basketball crowd make excuses, have a loser mentality, etc. For the extra special losses we're even treated to 56Bison73 virtually pointing over his shoulder at us and saying "yeah, what he said, what he said!"

My guess is that this isn't how you guys want to come across. Maybe you want us to give the Bison football team their just due. If that's the case, you're preaching to the choir. See, 99% of diehard Bison basketball fans are just as diehard about football if not more. I personally went to 12 football games this year and watched the others on TV. I'm guessing most other fans that post on the basketball board have similar stories. The only difference is they are also passionate about hoops. There is no exclusive club or crowd. There is a TON of room on the bandwagon if anyone wants to ride the roller coaster of ups and downs with the people that enjoy the hoops team. No one on this Bison hoops board knows me personally. All I've done to qualify myself for posting on the Bisonville basketball board is follow the team as a fan. I am not a hoops expert whatsoever nor am I an NDSU VIP, far from it. Just a fan.

Maybe the point you're trying to make is that NDSU shouldn't accept or be happy with losing, regardless of the sport. If that's the point you're trying to make, I think most of us can agree with that.

Maybe you'd rather see fundraising money go towards the football team than the BSA and that is why the facilities/arena/gym buzzwords always draw an argument. I'm guessing most basketball fans here would love to see the BSA done first, and then all of our facilities would be up to par so we can turn our attention back to football improvements.

I honestly just want to understand what the motive is. I can tell you that from my side, the perception is that the only time I see a couple of you on the basketball board is to rub in a loss, similar to what you'd expect from a rival school. I have enough respect for you guys as former players and fellow Bison fans to believe that's not the real motive. So truthfully, what's the motive?

PS - I can't reiterate strongly enough that my post about things I'd like to improve about the basketball program were not specific to this loss. I never said we lost tonight because of any of those reasons. Did that belong in the GDT thread? Maybe not, but I just want to be clear. I am really happy with Saul's recruiting.

This was the worst basketball game I have ever watched. This will definitely be the only Bison game I will see this year. I certainly won't drive to Sioux Falls now. I was embarassed that I brought my son to the game. We couldn't hit a shot, they couldn't miss a three pointer. We looked slow. We made their guards look like Ben Woodside copies ast night. We sat a few rows behind the bench and watched the team. I know Saul never gets too worked up but I thought we might get some reaction from him about his team's play. Other than a few words with the ref, he seemed resigned to a defeat last night.

Am wondering if the conference has some rules about who sits right behind the opposition's bench? There were a couple of rows of UMKC students sitting right behind our bench. They were really calling out our players by name and finally as Lawrence came off the floor, he flipped them off. I can't say I blame him but it showed his concentration on the game was gone. Of course, this really fired out the students and they were on him hard the rest of the night.

It was definitely embarrassing. Last night, I kept thinking to myself Saul needs to fly off the handle, get T'd up and tossed from that game just to show there was some life on that bench. Try to light a fire in the players. Absolutely nothing to lose. We didn't have any emotion and no chance of winning the game. There was a play where LA was taking a shot right in front of the Bison bench and got anhilated by a UMKC player......no whistle. Great opportunity to show some fire.
Fundamentally, we were terrible. No physicality at all. Too much dribbling at the top of the key. No threat of an inside game. Drove the baseline under the backboard countless times. Everyone parked behind the 3 pt line the entire possession. They had 1 player who could beat us (and nearly did in Fargo) and we didn't have a plan to stop him. The guy I watched the game with asked me if we have a weight program for our players because we look small-bodied and soft.....we didn't even finish off screens because there might be contact. UMKC spread their offense, passed inside until we collapsed and kicked it out for wide open 3's all night. If we want to shoot 3's all night, the offense needs to start in the paint. Ughhh, I'm still deflated from that game and the lack of effort.

I agree....it looked like they were half fronting Marshall and sagging a help guy behind him to prevent the lob. Ball reversal and flashing some guys high and low may have opened it up. When he was open, our guards were busy dribbling and not ready to pass. Marshall sat the bench most of the 2nd half and Aaberg didn't see the floor til very late in the game so our inside game was nonexistent.

Well I thought we were done with this...we beat Oakland on the road, crushed SUU and gave ORU a fight. I want to say it was just an off night, I guess I'll let the USD game be the judge.

Yea I agree. They can certainly make a run in the Summit and completely change the perception of the up and downs of the season much like the football team did last year.

But good grief this was just disappointing.

First, let me say this. I followed along on this thread last night for the entire game without commenting. Then, after we lost, I saw what I thought were excuses flying AGAIN, so a made one simple post after someone said, "Well, ORU lost too" or something to that effect. I posted, "Well, there's are excuse." I posted that just as food for thought, meaing, "Do we really want to continue making excuses for this team". Well, I immediately started getting ripped, and, when that happens, you can bet the last dollar you spend at Whataburger that I am coming in and I am not going just go lay by my dish and wimper.

Now, to answer some of the questions posed and to add a bit more on my feelings about this.

First, I think it is BS and myopic for people to suggest that fans like me aren't "qualified" to post or otherwise make comments about the BB team because we haven't been "regular" posters in BB threads. I say BS. As I mentioned in another thread, I have been following NDSU BB for more years than some of you have been on this earth. Also, I do no just a bit about BB. In fact, I used to coach at Irv's summer BB camps. As an example, after the UND game, I posted that we are not very serious/good at setting screens, in that we don't really put a body on the defender--instead, we basically move out of the way before any contact is made by the defender. Guess what? I see that same sort of comment made by many so-called BB fans IN THIS VERY THREAD.

As for my motivation for posting in BB threads, it is because I am a passionate fan of ALL NDSU athletics. I don't come here to diss the MBB team. My posts generally point out we have to quit making excuses for this team, not only this year, but in all years. Some say we are young? I say, REALLY?? By now, these players have played in more games (including road games) than the sophmore players on the FB team, and many of our young athletes in track and field. Hell, they are closer to being jr's than sophomore's as things stand. Are they going to turn magically into disciplined, high intensity players in the off season?? I don't know but I hope so.

Also, to suggest that I posted here to say, "See, I told you so" should go in the preposterous statement thread. That may how you think I think, but it ain't even close to reality. And, BDan, you can GFY for the post you made. You know why??!! Because you are sitting behind a keyboard trying to be a smartass, but don't have big enough--if any--balls to let people know who you are. I have never hidden who I am, nor have several others. Again, you apparently interpret my posts as though I feel I am more important than you or others, and, again, THAT'S HOW YOU THINK I FEEL, when in reality, you are dead effing wrong. Do you understand that concept??!! An example would be for me to think that the so-called, self-proclaimed BB fans attempting to stifle those who they don't think fall into that same category indicates arrogance. Well, suprise, I don't think that way.

They were really calling out our players by name and finally as Lamar came off the floor, he flipped them off. I can't say I blame him but it showed his concentration on the game was gone. Of course, this really fired out the students and they were on him hard the rest of the night.

I've posted in good times and in bad.....IMO early on this team was PLAYING basketball....they didn't know any better. Right now we are over-thinking the game and trying too hard..... I reiterate, there is something going on internally with this team that isn't right.....Maybe if we are lucky, they've hit a wall this time of year since we are young....if we are unlucky, it's something more. I am basing this on seeing the game in person Thursday and watching all the other games on GoBison.com. When I watch a game in person, I watch the coach and I watch body language......Neither was positive in KC.
