View Full Version : Letters from Highway Patrol?

Has anyone begun to received letters from the highway patrol from various states? The State of Iowa sent me a friendly letter reminding me of our trip to Frisco... 71 in a 55... Oops, needless to say the friendly reminder was costly, but the Bison logo's on our car look awesome in the pictures!!! Maybe some of this cash will make it's way to Ceder Falls so the Panthers can improve...

Got pulled over in Kansas at 2am, clocked me at 74 in a 60. Believe it or not, even though I didn't have current insurance, I somehow got out of it with a warning. He was a local, not Highway patrol. GO BISON!!

I was ticketed in Nebraska once. The patrolman escorted me to a mailbox...where I could put 'cash' in the envelope that he provided. My choice was to do this, or to stay in Nebraska until my court appearance. Nice of him to provide the envelope.

It was like 61 in a 55 and same thing, he followed us to the postoffice. The western third of nebraska is just made for speeding and this state trooper was a very stern Dick. Just remembered that when I read your post. They haven't advanced their system much since then apparently.

Fight it.
The controversy here in IL revolves around the fact that the camera cannot identify with any amount of certainty who was driving the car. This is an infringement on due process. (here anyway).......alot of the red light cameras have been removed in my area because of this.

Got nailed by a speed camera in Maryland on my way to the airport for the game. $40 and if you pay on time they don't report it to your insurance. That's the way it works here.

If they sent your ticket unconfirmed mail, I don't believe you've technically been served, and if you live out of state (or in some places out of the county) they probably won't bother sending someone to actually serve you. There are all kinds of people who hate speed and red light cameras so it shouldn't be overly difficult to locate sources of accurate information about how whatever jurisdiction is trying to extract money from you operates their system.

Oh, yes, the infamous US Highway 75; 2 lane until you get to Holton, Kansas, if you got off I-29 at Nebraska City on your way to Topeka......... a damn long stretch of highway.....especially at night.

1. If I won, would I have to send back the pictures the great state of Iowa sent me?

2. I prefer to let others fight my battles. Let some troll spend his money and time fighting the ticket and let me reap the rewards. Worked perfectly for me with my tickets from Fargo. And yes, I obviously vote for democrats!

That supreme court decision was a travisty. Perhaps not from a legal perspective but certainly from a common sense perspective. The Legislature needs to fix that non-sense and let growing urban areas set their own fines. Maybe if things get nuts enough in the oil patch they'll reconsider.

I still don't have the charge from Alamo for the tolls as I keep checking activity on the credit card I used. We drove all over the place......downtown Dallas over to Fort Worth, up to Frisco a few times, and to Waco and back in addition to Airport to Plano. Kind of wierd.......don't know what to expect for tolls $25, $50 or $100+. What a crappy system. The guy at the rental assured me they had the automatic device for gathering tolls. I better not get photos sent with the higher rates!

I hope that is not the case. I had a toll tag in my Avis car but there was an on/off toggle on it. I didn't realize it until I got to the hotel but was glad when I reailzed it was on. That would have sucked to realize it was off. My charges were only like $5 and they appeared about a week after the game. I'm sure a lot of the efficiency has to do with the rental car company and their systems. Avis seemed pretty good.

Almost every major rental agencies have them on their cars. You look for a small sticker on the passenger side, think its on the front. If is covered its not active and you just peel off the top of the sticker
and its activated.

Our Hertz rental had a paypass charge of $13.46 which seems kind of steep for one trip from the DFW area to Frisco and back. I guess that's how they keep taxes low in Texas.

Yeah - I was perplexed by it - I looked and didnt see the transponder on the windshield and Im thinking they let rentals go free - wtf! But then I thought maybe with al the damn fees etc on rentals they just added in a road use fee to cover like $20 and call it a day - IDK. Havent gotten a bill yet for it - I rented from Hertz wholly owned subsidiary - AADVANTAGE.

Normally, on out of state tickets, there isn't really much incentive for the issuer to track down offenders in order to get paid.

That said, not paying the ticket or showing up to defend yourself is likely to result in a bench warrant being issued for your arrest. Not really something to worry about if you never intend to go there again. On the other hand, if you get stopped again in future, and it comes up on the screen in the cruiser, you will, most likely, get cuffed and hauled in. All sorts of fun and delays could ensue at that point.

While these things can happen, a more likely result of not paying traffic fines in another state is that your ND license will be suspended.

I was told that too. I have a friend who has ND plates, and has lived in Oak Cliff for 7 years. He said he has never gotten a thing in the mail at either his texas address or is north dakota address.

I also read a thing that said some car rental agencies charge a 25 dollar fee per toll plus the toll if you didnt get the toll tag.

Some people were saying they were getting bills of like 200 and 300 dollars for driving through around 10 tolls.(In a rental car)

I imagine out of state licensed rentals would not have the "toll tag" of Dallas area tolls. We rented our car from Hertz and I declined the toll tag and was careful to avoid toll roads. Luckily for me where our hotel was at and the interstate frontage road along the n-s tollway by the airport allowed me to do that. Guess I haven't even checked to see if for some mysterious reason got charged a toll didn't go through any so shouldn't have! According to the website they take pictures of out of state etc and send it to you (but apparently that system hasn't been perfected yet).

OK - I havent got anything yet - I never had explanation at AADVANTAGE Rent-a-Car about any options. I would imagine they SHOULD put it on all rentals and the rental agreement you sign would have you automatically give consent to being charged later on your credit card (they do this for any parking tickets anyway). My big question is: why the WEIRD amounts for the tolls though - 44 cents and 72 cents and 93 cents and just weird amounts like that as I saw on the signs passing the "booths"?? If I get a HUGE bill like $200 or whatever - Im hiring CAS!
