Now that we have the ticket negativity basically behind us!

Let's start to discuss the ground travels to Frisco. We are planning on driving our shinny new Honda Odyssey from Fargo to Friso in one day. Any others? We plan on making the trip starting in the early morning Thursday arriving late that evening.

Plan on making it in one day. Leaving in my dads Buick Roadmaster, not sure on the year, but it's got 214,000 on it. Getting new tires, shocks and an allignment on it before departure time. Departure time is Thursday at about 10pm and arriving at the hotel, Country Inn & Suites in Lewisville, TX sometime in the evening Friday. I'll probably need to mapquest the exact route we'll take but from what I've seen on here already, looks like I've got it figured out. 4 of us coming down all clad in yellow. Go Bison!!!

Myself, my girlfriend, and 2 other girls will be making the trip in my girlfriends 2011 Malibu 2LT. Such a comfortable ride. We will be departing around 3pm Thursday with an expected arrival in Dallas of about 11 am. We plan on taking a 3-4 hour nap from this point and then proceed to party with some of our friends in the band. Will will depart Dallas around 11 am on Sunday and hope to be back to Fargo by 3am ish on Monday.

One more thing to think about: I'm not sure how much of a hassle it is, but if you take Hwy 75 down to Topeka it looks like there are 7 of these (5 between Topeka and Wichita):

If you take Hwy 81, it appears there are only 2 (south of Wichita). That's what it looks like to me, anyway...

The owner is flying so it just isn't going to work. Also, I think all of us that made the trip to Bozeman on the Battlewagon thought that a trip to Texas would result in an alcohol poisoning death or two.

This is the route we use going back north to God's country....It is OPEN. Flooding had this closed at Nebraska City for most of the summer but was good traveling during Thanksgiving. Nebraska City to Topeka is mostly 2 lane so allow ample time and DON't SPEED!!! (spoken from experience).

Toll from Topeka to Wichita is $8.00 but it is usually worth it because the speed limit is 75 and the road is good. Also, pull off in Topeka and fill gas. The service areas on the turnpike are always priced $.10-$.15 per gallon higher. Topeka gas price today is $2.93 and hopefully stays there for awhile.

Better bring a shitload of dimes. Having to pay to drive through Kansas? Preposterous. As a kid we used to joke that they made you pay to get out of Kansas once you're in so avoid it at all costs. Still put them one notch above Iowa who hadn't figured out the concept yet:D

Yeah, I realize the price is reasonable (although a bus would be a LITTLE more expensive since they charge per axle). I just wasn't sure how much of a hassle it would be for buses or RVs having to stop so many times. If everything else is equal (and I'm not positive they are), I'd choose to avoid the tolls. Plus, I don't think the bus I'm riding in travels at 75 mph much anyway.

You're right, Bri-dog. A bus is more. Go to KSturnpike.com and it will calculate the toll based on # of axles. Once you get on the turnpike, you don't stop until you get to your desired exit. So, if you get on at Topeka, you only stop to pay when you get off at Wichita (yes, someone will reply that is sexual) ....you don't stop at each toll booth. Happy motoring.

Ahhh, that makes it a lot easier. Different from the few toll roads here in Denver. Although now they just bill you by your license plate number...

Fargo to Frisco is only 1050 miles, so 17.5 hours would be an average speed of only 60. Should be easy to average at least 75 with a few stops for gas.

Perhaps we will get there in time to get out and have fun with our fellow Bison fans. Travelling with the kids is great when they are sleeping so Thursday should be peaceful but Friday they will be awake and constantly asking if we are there yet.

When I was in grad school in TX, my girlfriend (wife) lived in Fargo, so I made this trip many times.

I always made better time just going through KC, especially with a car (when I had a Uhaul, I went through Neb. City). I know, there will be a lot of folks that disagree, but I always saved time this way. Cruise set at 79. No stops for towns, etc. Take the loop S of KCI and next thing you know, you are on the turnpike heading S to Wichita.

Weather!!! I can't stress this enough but watch the weather carefully. Winter precip in KS/OK is usually ice, not snow. After one Christmas, it took my nearly 25 hours to get to Dallas.

The turnpike is easy driving, but YES fill with gas before getting on it. And when I was making the drive, there were only Hardee's at the rest areas. Not sure if that is the case now. So if you don't like a mushroom and swiss burger, you might think about filling up your tank too.

Safe travels.

Sorry to inform you that the repeat of the Wyo BattleWagon (aka Suburban) will probably not find any snowbanks to park on , on main street down in Texas for the obvious reason of no snow. Could anyone arriving Thursday set up a dirt and brick and rock pile to park the BattleWagon on in front of Friday nights festivities ?? Also, don't speed through Sioux City. When I went through there during Thanksgiving, they had a radar trailer set up with cameras taking pictures of speeders. It was set up in the southbound lane on the IA side.

I think someone should actually organize the rules, site the timeline and meeting spot for Thursday night. We do want this to be safe, so we would want to "promote" following the state speed guidlines. It would likely come down to bathroom and food breaks, "right path", mechanical issues, leaving late, ect, ect, ect......

We likely wouldn't even need to meet at the same place - just have a gentlemans agreement that nobody leaves before 6:00 AM to be eligible....

Of course, I won't be handing it out until Saturday morning, as I will be flying on Friday.

Tatanka, let me know who wins.

Good luck to all, but be safe!!

I went to a wedding reception at the Alerus and the bus was parked right outside the front door. As I walked in apparently a Sue football recruiting event had been going on in another room and they were all just walking out with coaches. They all got a great view of the bus parked right outside their home field as they walked out the door.

I can just hear Muss now. "You think that bus is cool you should see all the painted up jalopy, dart and fiestas that we have at our tailgaiting".

I would also have accepted "We'll match any tailgating rig you see at NDSU."

Took my Saab in for a tune up before the trip and found that I have a bent rim  Glad I brought it in though.

Taking the wife's SUV now. Gas will probably cost about the same though since we don't have to run premium in her truck.

Check www.seventhavenueauto.com and see if they have the Saab rim you are looking for. I'm sure it wouldn't be too expensive to buy a used rim if they have it. If your tire is still good, it shouldn't cost too much for the rim and mounting the tire. It will still probably be cheaper to drive than said SUV.

I use www.car-part.com since it pulls from every salvage yard in any region in the US. No salvage yards in ND or SD have the rim but there are a few in MN for cheap and some on ebay for cheap as well.

The SUV is a V6 Escape that gets about 23 mpg on the highway. My Saab gets about 28 mpg.

2200 miles round trip
2200 miles/23 mpg= 96 gallons @ $3/gallon = $288 for the Escape
2200miles/28 mpg= 79 gallons @ $3.30/gallon for premium = $261 for the Saab

$27 difference in gas costs, plus we will have 4x4 if we need it and more room. My wife is flying so the Escape would just be sitting in the garage anyways.

Ah yes, I missed the part where you said it takes premium. My mistake. For sure stick with the SUV then and use the extra room for beer and/or more people.

Y does a SAAB require premium gas? Srsly?! Many owner's manuals state suggest premium should be used, but those same vehicles will run just fine on lower octane gas. Heck, some 10% ethanol brands have higher octane levels than some premiums.

All forced induction cars require premium and my Saab is turbo'd. I wouldn't think about running a supercharged or turbo'd car on 87/89. I wouldn't run a car on corn unless it was tuned for ethanol.

What about ethanol blends at 91?

What about ethanol blends at 91?

Heck, make your own blend. A friend of mine once told me that if your car requires a higher octane, just do a 50/50 mix of regular unleaded and E85. This should raise your octane enough where it will not burn out your fuel injectors AND it will clean all that unwanted carbon and sludge out of your engine.

Why bother for 91 octane? You'll spend about the same and have to mess with injector pulsing to run corn. Not worth it.

I mentioned this earlier in this thread but thought I'd drop a reminder. Just traveled I-29 south all the way to Topeka yesterday.

Roads are all good but DON'T SPEED THROUGH SIOUX CITY OR ON HWY 75 IF YOU'RE TAKING THAT ROUTE. 2 machines taking radar and photos just into the IA side of Sioux City, one going each direction. Also passed 2 Nebraska HP who had cars pulled over in the Nebraska City area.
Cheapest gas was at Elk Point, SD and SD side of Sioux City.....$2.93 in Elk Point. $3.04 at Nebraska City.
Travel safely everyone.

Really no construction anywhere except for a very short section in Sioux City.

Sweet! Was Iowa full of road construction on I-29?

One positive of the flooding this summer is that the road sections that were under water were resurfaced. And it seemed that in prior summers I-29 was perpetually under construction, so perhaps IA-DOT got it all done.
