View Full Version : If you are a WR Recruit......

If you are a WR recruit, and NDSU is after you......here is what I would be thinking. The QB position is literally stacked for years to come, we can run the ball at will, have a massive O line (with tradition), will be graduating our best WR and play inside in controlled conditions. The team is stacked at most positions and due to graduation and not knowing about the health of this year's freshman, we really don't know much about the WR spot for the future.....it is a good time to chose NDSU, if you can play, you will right away.

Ryan Smith is a stud, everyone loves him and we should, but he is a slot receiver. I am not giving up on Cooper Wahlo who has all the ability but hasn't broken into the lineup yet, Vraa and Gebhart have injury concerns but a ton of skill. Other than that, we had multiple walk ons playing last week and will again this week. They are doing a good job too. Not sure how Andrew Okland is doing, but the Fargo South grad sure looks the part. I hope he has had a great redshirt season.

I feel like this team is going to play about 15 games a year for a few years and WR is a position we need to fill.

Sidenote: Big Tex Warren Holloway is one of the must underrated Bison in a long time. He is really playing at a high level. Way to step up.

Anyone care to comment on who we are looking at, who we are competing with on those recruits and maybe about DeSean Warren who has already verbally committed to us from Kansas. He appears to be a very quality recruit who is a terrific athlete and missed this year with a torn ACL.

Orsino's page indicates he was scheduled to visit this weekend. If he did, he had to leave impressed.

I think its easier to sell our passing game to a TE or FB than it is to a WR. If your a WR in our offense your running outs and comebacks with the occasional deep route. TE's run more seam routes in our offense than WR's do. Holloway has kind of been the exception the last few years as he's been the one target Jensen has looked to. Other than him we have talented WR's who just don't get looks to perform in our offense when we are rushing 50 times a game.

I really think you hit the nail on the head Burgundy. With the exception of Smith, next years WR corp is a series of question marks. There are a lot of good noncommited WRs, many
without offers (Parmelee, Chesson, Charles Harris are all commited, I believe). Here are links to available WRs in the states we recruit, with the exception of Matt Sosinsky in Wiscon-
sin.

If you're a stud, you could come here and starting next year, average 7-8 catches a game with 100+ yards...and a path to a late draft pick, or FA tryout.

Okland didn't clear. He's not on the roster, didn't practice, so I am pretty sure he did not have a very good redshirt season. He likely lost it like Williams did, assuming he ever gets eligible.

1) When recruiting a WR don't forget to mention the new turf!
2) I saw what appeared to be a recruit after the game with a blue/white lettermans jacket on FWIW.

I am quite sure that you are wrong about this, and I don't understand why you keep repeating it. I have been told that Okland is practicing and that he has progressed well of late. His omission from the online roster is probably just an oversight.

we saw him with the other redshirts at the SDSU game for sure. I also have heard good things.....which is why I am officially confused now about Okland. Someone care to clarify? I guess I assumed he eventually was cleared (clearinghouse) and then started practicing and took a typical redshirt year. I really want his size out there. Sidenote, I watched an almost 7 minute video clip of verbal DeSean Warren....and he can move. I get the feeling that if he didn't blow out his knee, he is bigger than NDSU. I am excited for him.

BisonNeil, why do you make statements about something you obviously know nothing about? Okland is in the team photo on gobison. He missed summer practice because he needed to pick up one class. He has
practiced since schoool started and has played opposite MWill all season on the scout team.

I think some of you are very wrong on this WR future. Smith, Gebhart, Vraa, and Wahlo for sure next year. Bad year for injuries but this group has 3-4 years left.

That is true, but it didn't keep Stacy Robinson from being drafted by the N.Y. Giants. It's not like Nellermoe, Bentrim, or Hammerschmidt were putting up big numbers. Check out these stats from the 1983 Palm Bowl.

Top Individuals
Rushing--Bentrim (NDSU) 21-120; Corbin (CSU) 18-86; Stark (NDSU) 15-68; Molstre (NDSU) 13-58
Passing--Woody (CSU) 13-27-2, 147 yds.; Bentrim (NDSU) 3-11-0, 47 yds.
Receiving--Smith (CSU) 8-86; Robinson (NDSU) 3-47; Corbin
(CSU) 2-32; Woody (CSU) 1-1

....waiting for your apology......haha.

I think we have some kids with awesome future, but nobody is proven at this point. I have been Cooper Wahlo's biggest fan. I think Vraa and Gebhart are studs, but to this point, they haven't proved it on the field. Clearly Smith has been a complete stud this year. I am excited for this upcoming recruiting cycle to go through and to see what we have coming in. I think we have a future, but it is the least proven position for the future.

Okay, I know you have said that, but we have played a season and he is not on the on line version nor did he make a printed roster. I guess I just find it hard to believe that the SID is that incompetent. But, I won't say it again, I promise.

Sorry Burg!!

I am starting to like BisonNeil. Good fan, pretty passionate.....and admits when he is wrong. Ha. He like alot of us probably repeat certain things over and over. In this case with him not being on the roster, it is hard to tell what his status was. I am sure glad he is on the roster. He is that classic "raw" receiver that I am excited about down the road. While we are talking about the future and raw WR's, Cooper Wahlo is playing well. He is a great down field blocker and has great speed. Brock has been quoted as saying he has all of the tools and as soon as it is shown in a game, look out. I hope our young kids can stay healthy as there appears to be alot of talent coming back next year. Big Tex has some big shoes to fill.

Bohl said tonight on the coaches show that Andrew Okland is practicing and doing well. Kid has good size and could be a good weapon down the road.

i love cooper wahlo as well. i want him to step up badly and he has the ability. hopefully one day he breaks out. that end around play was nice. i feel as soon as he has one breakout game thats all it will take for him to explode and become a viable option for us
