With over 2/3 of the votes counted the Event Center is winning 54% to 46%. The facility will cost about 115 million dollars and will be paid for with a second penny sales tax.

How big is this thing going to be? I used to live in the region when they were trying for the new arena down town that went down in flames a few years ago.

Sioux Falls needs something. They miss out on a lot of events that Fargo and even Sioux City gets.

I posted about it back in July. I would think that the yea vote would be higher, apparently Sioux Falls population doesn't think this is a good idea. They have a decent plan and have been very open about how they're going about this and what it's going to look like. If it gets done it's going to be a nice facility for the Tournament although it's not to be completed until fall of 2014, so Sioux Falls would have to be awarded another 2 year contract before they play in the new facility.

They have some preliminary drawings on their website at the link below. It is unfortunately going to be a hockey rink also so there will be goofy seating in the lower sections for basketball.

If you live in Sioux Falls they had a special election today for it, far as I know that would have been the only way today.

Here is link to article it passed 58%-42% that looks a little better than the 54-46. Be interesting to see how this plays out for the summit tourney in 2015-2016!

About time they pulled their head out of their ass and got this done. I grew up in S. Dak and they've been talking about this for as long as I remember. I'm surprised they didn't try to get it big enough for to put a football field. Howard Wood Field is used all the time and that could have hosted a ton of hs football games. They also could have made a run at holding the state championships currently only held in Vermillion. Also the current SF Civic center is the worst place in the world to watch a concert. Sound absolutely sucks ass.

It's good for Fargo too since the 2 cities can route concerts off of one another. Once in a while they will compete but overall when a band is in Sioux Falls or Fargo, it's easy for a promoter to route to the next city. How big is this place?

12,000 seats but the documentation says that it could be expanded. Doesn't say expanded to how much. The configuration images show basketball, small basketball, hockey and various other concert configs but I"m surprised it doesn't show the arena football setup.

http://www.siouxfalls.org/~/media/documents/event_center/1038_Nov_2_News_Conference.ashx this shows all the amounts. They can expand up to about 13000 with a center stage. 12,000 is large basketball set up.

They even show a picture of the fargodome in that power point presentation.... but the picture must be pretty old no corner big screens.

Looks just like the MTS Centre but with a chunk of one endzone missing.

Whoa. You're right. Hope SF gets a discount for using a second hand floorplan (SD got a discount from Bell & Detweiler on the capitol--which used Montana's floorplan).

That missing chunk is the 'expansion area', for up to 15k or so for BB.

The reused plans is because these were conception plans to try to convince Sioux Falls citizens to vote for it. Now that it has been approved they will probably make them more "Sioux Falls" then cut and paste from other arenas. Sure that Mortenson didn't want to spend a bunch of money on drawings (as they were only budgeted a certain amount of money for that) that never would get used if the vote didn't pass. They had a bunch of real life pictures as to what the new arena would look like, that were taken at other arenas.

Too bad they aren't going to build it on the old zip feed elevator site. Then they could have incorporate the leaning elevator after the failed implosion into the design. That would have been pretty cool.

Steel going up looks like they are close to being on schedule according to their 4d animation only about a week off. Should have a good start on the steel on the west side up by summit tournament.

There was also an announcement yesterday that there will be a new floor installed for the Summit League tourney this year. The floor will then move over to the new events center upon it's completion.

3 cheers for no more ugly blue teal floors on ESPN!

Nice.. I was wondering when they were going to get rid of those ugly overlay stickers or whatever they are on the floor. The teal was a bit 90s.
