Screw 16 team "super conferences" lets just go to 32 teams.....

One of the reasons the Big East may be holding off on any expansion announcements about potential new members is that it is considering a plan that would create a nation-wide football conference incorporating between 28 and 32 teams in four divisions from Conference USA, the Mountain West Conference as well as the Big East.

According to sources from those conferences, the plan was devised as a way that the Big East could ensure its place as one of the six conferences receiving automatic BCS bids.

The document, which was obtained by The Globe, reveals an alternative plan which would help the Big East maintain its AQ status -- automatic qualification -- but also provide access to the Mountain West and Conference USA, who hope to gain such status.

Under the plan, Super Conference would consist of four divisions: West, Mountain, Central and the Big East.

In the 32-team format, the West Division would consist of Boise State, Hawaii, UNLV, Nevada, Fresno State, San Diego State, Utah State and San Jose State.

The Mountain Division would consist of Air Force, Wyoming, Colorado State, New Mexico, UTEP, SMU, Tulsa and Houston.

The Central Division would consist of Marshall, Memphis, Southern Mississippi, Tulane, UAB, Rice, Temple and Louisiana Tech.

And the Big East Division would consist of Louisville, UConn, Rutgers, Cincinnati, South Florida, Central Florida, East Carolina and Navy.

if you're making life-and-death decisions that include considering absolutely ridiculous alternatives you are better off dying with dignity than living as an embarassment.

I actually think this is a good move for these teams. They retain regional games, they get a 4-team playoff (when the other conferences only have one week of conference championship games), they probably keep a BCS bid, and most importantly, they get playoffs + bowl games.

Further, I think this opens the door for some FCS teams to make the jump to FBS. Maybe a North division in this conference with teams like Montana, NDSU, Northern Iowa as anchor teams?

I wonder if this will hurt fcs teams in the long run as far as playing games vs fbs schools. will teams continue to play OOC games or will they play a whole schedule with teams in their conference now that there will be super duper conferences?

More talk about the proposed super-duper conference.....

The Mountain West Conference, Conference USA and the Big East Conference are weighing creating a nationwide football superconference of 28 to 32 teams, with the goal of gaining an automatic Bowl Championship Series qualifying bid, according to multiple reports.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that commissioners of the three conferences were planning to meet on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of forming a single football league.

But later Tuesday, Big East spokesman John Paquette told ESPN.com's Joe Schad the conference does not have a scheduled in-person meeting with those conferences.

The Mountain West and Conference USA have already agreed to a football association, starting in 2012 or 2013.

"We would figure out some way -- four divisions of seven teams each, a playoff and then a conference championship game -- to come up with the (automatic qualifier)," UNLV athletic director Jim Livengood said Tuesday of the plan, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

"Craig and Britton are going into this meeting in New York with one thing in mind, to make this happen with the Big East," Livengood said, according to the report.

This reminds me of the razor blade wars. Schitck came out with 2 blades, Gillette went with the Mach 3 then Schitck countered with the Quattro only to be trumped again by the Gillette Fusion 5 blader. I'm not sure that it's over, we could see a 6, 7, or 8 blade in the future. Probably the funniest is part is that the onion predicted it all. "F**k Everything, We're Doing 5 Blades".

Looks like the big east is doing the same thing. "F**k everything, we're doing 32 teams".

The obvious logical path here is to continue to follow the Onion's example and expand the NCAA tournament to 4,096 teams.

You ever see the MadTV sketch about the Gillette Mach 20?? This was right after Schick came out with the Quattro.

One would think that a team would be at a big disadvantage trying to get to that BCS game having to play through such a big conference. You'd have to play a couple of extra games in there, more chance for injury and whatnot... but if it did happen then it would be one step closer to some sort of a college football playoff system!
