Apparently, some of you did not behave well at the Gopher game a couple of weeks ago.

Buhl is mother of a Gopher.

A Gopher player or an actual Gopher? Either way, impressive I guess...

haha, I've heard stories that before the Dome, that Dacotah Field was not exactly family-friendly either. Pro football should be family friendly. College ball is a whole different animal that gets adrenaline going in a completely different (and better) way.

Sadly, that type of behavior is partly what has led to my moniker on this board, but I certainly have cleaned it up since those days. Some folks must have gone over the line.

Some folks must have gone over the line. And some people are overly sensitive. Just because some people may be praying and some are standing doesn't mean you are in church. We take our kids to some tailgates and games...we know they are going to hear some objectionable language (CAS)...but that goes with the territory.

I'm sure there were some fans that were a little rowdy. It happens at games. If her son plays for the gophers she should stay away from Madison and iow city.

It's funny to watch the Wisconsin students do the eat shit, fuck off chant. I don't known-what this lady would do in that atmosphere.

The lady seems like a pain in the a$$.

I made" a Gopher family in front of me and my wife move to the student section :) Kidding, kidding. I guarantee we weren't swearing, but we were sure yelling and they did move, but a) the student section had better seats b) they had Bison fans in front and back of them. On the other hand, the Gopher fans right beside me stuck it out for almost the whole game and I chatted with them throughout the game. I thought Bison fans were great... the chants were positive and they were really brought some energy to the stadium (too bad the FargoDome is where that energy goes to die.)

You know, I could write a letter to the Star Tribune and paint Gopher fans with a broad brush because I heard some old coot assaulted a woman and witnessed another Gopher fan screaming at a Bison fan who was sitting with his family and then daring him to fight, but it would be a crock because, duh, "painting with a broad brush."

It goes both ways.

Just before the game we were standing in line for the shuttle when two bison fans walked into the porta-potties. A group of about 6 drunk young gopher fans rushed over and were punching and kicking the stalls, all the while yelling "f#@% the bison".

Yeah, the gopher fans were just little angels.

Why can't I comment on that one sided article?

The only thing I saw in our corner section was a drunk fan after the Gopher got up 7-0 who taunted Bison fans all the way up the aisle. I was waiting for her the rest of the game but she disappeared after that. I guess she didn't have anything to taunt about after that. Most of the Gopher fans around us were pretty easy to talk with and realized what the Gophers are up against this year.

I could write a rebuttal about how my wife and I were basically accosted by two Gopher fans just before the end of halftime. We were essentially the lone bison fans left on the concourse at the time, and two male gopher fans walked directly into us and started harassing me about my jersey, dewrag, etc.,--let's just say I don't think it ended the way they expected it to. I was not about to back down. I think things went both ways down there, but one team lost and now we hear the complaining. Eff em!!

Well, we were sitting in a primarily Gopher section and I never witnessed any Gopher or Bison fans that were obnoxious or over the line. I personally kept waiting for some of the Gopher fans sitting behind us to tell us to please sit down, since we were standing and yelling about every other play. The Bison fans in and around us were all just having a good time and being loud, not abusive, obnoxious, vulgar or anything even close to it. Now, have I been to games where I have had to tell my fellow Bison fans to tone it down or shut the hell up, yes, unfortunately, but it has certainly been very rare. Yes, I think this woman just had an axe to grind and the Forum was more than happy to publish it......

Our section had lots of cheering and a little good natured ribbing but no confrontation, unless you count me grinding on one of my neighbors who was wearing a Gopher sweatshirt. I did see a fan wearing NDSU clothes one section over get escorted out in the first quarter but we didn't notice what he did.

I was in a Gopher section. When I got there some guy said something about hockey. I responded by saying we are the team that beat you last time in football. He didn't say anything until later on he told me to sit down after a big Bison defensive play that brought up a 3rd down. Other than that my section was pretty quiet. I did wave bye bye to him after Marcus Williams took that INT to the house and he was leaving.

The most disgusting behavior at the gopher game? Two UND students were sitting near my wife, wearing NDSU attire and cheering for the bison. When she questioned them on it, they had no idea about a rivalry and were just cheering on a fellow North Dakota team. SICK!!! Disgusting!

The Bison/Sioux game has been gone so long now that they don't even know or care anymore. Something is very wrong about that. Especially if they don't hate us as much as we hate them. Sad. Very sad.

Yes, there were jerk gopher fans as well as jerk bison fans I am sure. Anyone who reads that letter and thinks only Bison fans were acting inappropriately is an idiot.

When my wife and I returned to our seats during halftime, we realized we were in the wrong section. Rather than haul my 300# carcass back down and up
the stairs, we decided to cut across on an aisle occupied by a constipated looking middle-aged couple and their teenage daughter, all wearing Gopher colors.
I excused us as we passed and when we reached our seats, my wife informed me the woman had shrewishly informed her she wasn't welcome to pass that
way again. on the other hand, we had 4 U students sitting in front of us and they were really nice kids - put up with a lot of ribbing.

The Gopher fans I was by were all pretty nice people. One lady corrected me on a couple of events in Gopher football since we last played them. One guy told me, "Sit the hell down!" I turned and looked at him to tell him to piss off and he smiled and said he was kidding and he didn't mind to see some excited fans. The rest were either quiet or nice people.

This lady needs to grow up. Sorry that your boy, probably a walk-on redshirting freshman, was sad that his team lost and you decide to complain about the fans. Had Minnesota won, I'm guessing no article would have been published.

Seriously folks...are we going to allow this bullshit to be a point of discussion for a long time? It's a frackin college football game. If there weren't some Animal House behavior I'd be worried. Has anyone here been to a southern football game?? Like Alabama, LSU, etc ? I've been to a Florida State home game. It's unbelievable what happens there.

I got my masters from Arizona State. It was a 70,000 person party with coolers (containing alcohol) allowed in the stadium. And the smells of pot took over the stadium. This was in 1980. My God !! The crowd reacted to action on the field as an afterthought. The announcer would have to tell the crowd that something had happened. Then they'd gradually cheer. Seriously...it was one huge party. Some of the stuff that went on...O...M...G.

The MN game atmosphere looked like a ladies aid meeting. It was so clean that I couldn't believe what I saw. From the MN student section it sounded like a choral concert. It felt as though they needed to entertain themselves rather than watch the game. (I don't blame them. They've gotten used to it.)

Were there any arrests? If not...there's nothing to discuss.

The lady who wrote this letter to the editor really needs to get out in the world. Her children hear worse at school during recess every day. Trust me on this. I'm an elementary teacher.

Just like a few poster in this thread I wasn't going to post anything on bisonville about the Gopher fans until reading through this thread. The Gopher fans we sat by were the worst group of opposing fans I have ever had the displeasure to be around. Rude, swearing, name calling, etc. When I think back on it it was actually pretty bad. This sort of thing doesn't bother me because I know it goes with the territory of traveling to away games but the fans we were sitting by were so disrespectful that my sister in law was in tears. When I compare this with the first two Gopher games I believe that these fans were already defeated before they got to the stadium and where ready to "fight" in the stands knowing their team couldn't produce on the field.

Section 211 seemed to be well behaved on both sides. Couple of female gophers fans were throwing jabs at my brother-in-law but he gave as good as he got and they were pretty quiet by half time.
I don't know who the two Bison fans in the middle of about row 29 or so were but they were hilarious and clean with their comments.
When they started spelling N-O-R-T-H...D-A-K-O-T-A we were falling out of our seats laughing.
The comments were timed perfect when the crowd was just quiet enough for us to hear.
Even some of the gopher fans around us were getting a kick out of it. "We want Brewster!!!!"

Section 101 had a couple of A-hole gopher fans surrounded by mostly Bison fans. The guy got irrate at people standing in front of him and started shouting at everyone (including some gopher fans) to sit down. A bison fan gave him some crap and the 400 lb gopher fan physically grabbed the Bison fan and threatened to beat his ass using every curse word imaginable....all this in front of the guys' wife and kids. Security came over to diffuse the situation but the guys' 500 lb wife tried to keep it going by calling security over another time to complain. Then to top it off, gopher guy goes back and stands behind the stands to watch the rest of the game. Lady who wrote the letter to the editor needs to get down off her high horse!

sounds like somebody has sour grapes. this person is just mad that we beat the gophers AGAIN. the majority of bison fans were good. but it's a football game, what do you expect? there's going to be yelling and people swearing at a game. bison fans were bad so she went to the student section? that makes a lot of sense. considering some students yelled "F*ck the Bison" at me at the game and one of my friends got peanuts thrown at her in the student section.

Things were mostly OK in mid section 105.......by chance my wife and I sat next to two older Bison fans. Two rows below there were 4 Bison fans, otherwise mostly surrounded by Gopher fans. One of the four Bison fans below us did a bunch of trash talking with a Gopher fan across the aisle and it was quite entertaining as now and then they would crack a smile. So the game gets going and the trash talking Bison fan is up standing all the time. I don't care, but the Bison fan next to me does and for nearly every play for the rest of the game he is yelling at the guy to sit down, which he eventually did every time. I told the complaining Bison fan that I would be standing on 3rd, 4th and other critical downs and that should be OK. Amazing how many Bison fans think that sitting all the time trumps any standing.

Pretty good experince in Section 103, except for 1 guy sitting 2 rows below us that went all JBB on us late in the 3rd. It started before the game, and built up throughout. We started with the typical "Let's go Bison" and "Bison home game" chant, and he was responding with "You live in North Dakota" when we did the clapping part. We laughed a little.

Later on he said something else about ND, so I responded with:
"LOW UNEMPLOYMENT", clap, clap, clap, clap, clap;
"BUDGET SURPLUS", clap, clap, clap, clap, clap;
"NO GOV'T SHUTDOWN", clap, clap, clap, clap, clap;
"#1 ECONOMY", clap, clap, clap, clap, clap (not sure if the last one is true, but it kept with the theme).

There were a quite a few people laughing, including Gopher fans. This must have lit the fuse on the 1 particular JBB-Gopher fan. A few minutes later, Comfortably Numb Bison said something rather harmless, and JBB-Gopher fan loses it. He turns around, saying something like "I am a born and raised Minnesotan, I take pride in my state, and I take that personal. You are ok, and you, and you, and you, BUT YOU (pointing at Comfortably Numb) are an asshole." Next thing he knew he had 10-15 (we had 23 in our group) Bison fans ripping him a new one, telling him to turn around as the game was "thattaway", to STFU, and to leave if he can't handle it. Even Grandpa-runtheoption and wifey were ripping this guy. JBB-Gopher fan left a few minutes later.

Comfortably Numb can be pretty obnoxious at games, but he was on a roll that night with completely harmless stuff. For that guy to turn around and yell at one of "ours" was similiar to the idea of "I can talk bad about my family, but I'll be damned if I let anyone outside the family get away with it."

Apparently, some of you did not behave well at the Gopher game a couple of weeks ago.

http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/336176/group/Opinion/

The Gophers fan who assaulted a girl overrides any obnoxious Bison fan. Sounds like she was annoyed by the fact the Gophers got their ass kicked but to add injury to insult, they didn't have home field advantage and felt annoyed that. Its annoying. Deal with it. If she thinks were annoying she will be shocked when she hears the entire Badger student section chant cuss words in unison!! What a f-ing prude! !! I heard no swearing at all in our section. Just real fans who cheered louder than Gophers fans

Why would you have hate or anger towards people you dont know? The object is to root for your team to victory is a sporting contest. Unless you have had an unfavorable experience with a certain program I dont understand the hate anger thing. Especially when you are a fan.

I think that's kind of neat. If you were a und student, wouldn't it be tempting to follow the Bison just down the road playing in a powerful conference and being a threat most years to win it all instead of , er well, you know what I mean.

the feeling of having my team win is a tempting feeling to have, but if UND were doing well and NDSU weren't, it would basically just solidify my dislike for them and make me want the Bison to beat them all the more. i do see your point about UND fans specifically, though, in that when it comes to anything other than hockey, they are flakey enough to commit rivalry treason.

We were near the front of section 222 and I didn't notice any bad behavior from any fans. The following day at the Vikings game we sat in front of 4 people who were so drunk they slurred most of their words which included many F-bombs.

I've worn Vikings colors to several NFL stadiums and never experienced anything other than good-natured ribbing when the Vikes lost. The worst experience we've had was at Montana State last year when this guy kept shouting "North Dakota's a S**t hole" over and over for the first half. I think he actually punched a teenage Bison fan in the 2nd half and got escorted out by the cops. Some of the MSU people next to me apologized for his behavior and kept telling him to shut up.

Hats off to who ever they were.

Again...My sick and disgusting comment was sarcastic. But kinda not. If UND was in the FCS championship, would you root for them? I sure wouldnt. They are our rivals. My comments are illustrating how sad it is that the rivalry has died.

Rocky Hager once said (paraphrasing) you can go lose one game the entire season and win the rest. If that one loss is to UND the season is a failure.

I wonder if Michigan fans root for michigan state? Pitt for penn state? Texas for A&M?.....Cal, Stanford and UCLA? and so on... Its called a rivalry.

I thought Minnesota's student section was great... heck, I'd have moved there if I was a Gopher fan. For one thing, a lot of them stayed for the whole game which really surprised me because t-shirts + chilliness = leave early. Maybe all the jumping around kept them warm. If you watched the Big Ten Network, you probably noticed that just about every crowd shot was of the student section (which is genius and something KVLY should probably take note of.)

Might I suggest to you that in the future, you purchase your tickets in a section that is not going to be filled with 15000 of the opposing fan base. I did feel slightly bad when late in the game I spelled out "Mediocrity" instead of "Minnesota".

I'm just glad that this lady didn't see the Gopher fan turn around and flip off everyone in our section, nor did she see another Gopher fan physically grab an elder NDSU guy (from Sykeston) and pull him down by his belt after a NDSU TD.

Posted this previously, but fits here

Had a great time at the game. Older gentleman sitting in front of me has degrees from both schools. Had a long conversation before the game as we share the same profession (but he's retired), background and he grew up in Fargo. He was wearing Gopher gold as were his 3 friends. They had a lot of questions about our team and the players. They asked about the 16 players from MN and I corrected them that that was our 2 deep and that we really had 36 on the team. They were a little surprised. I told them to keep an eye on 1 and 77 as they would be playing on Sundays.

When the game started a Gopher fan sitting 3 rows behind me started chanting "lets go sue". The 4 in front of me turned around and were shaking their heads. I looked back and realized he was aiming the chant at us. He was smiling and pointing at us. After about a half hour of this I turned around and took a picture of him with my BB (sorry CAS not an Iphone). I told the wife, loud enough for him to hear this is going on gopherhole.com. He kept it going until right when Marcus scored the TD at the end of the half. I turned around to go to the concessions and asked him so.... how's sue doing. The smile was gone and he was staring daggers. He lasted most of the 3rd qtr and then he was gone.:ranting:

When the 4 gents got up to leave they each shook my hand and thanked me for shutting up the jackass. They also said they appreciated the insight into the Bison.

Great night to be a Bison:biggrin:

There is a lot of talk in this thread about a rivalry with UND. This has been revisited thousands of times on here, but some of the older fans seem to have a problem with letting it go. We haven't played them in almost a decade. Our current players and current NDSU students were in elementary school the last time NDSU played UND. They don't care.

It's almost like an identity crisis for our fanbase, because older fans consider UND a rival because of thier experiences in college, but then tell younger fans who know nothing about UND that SDSU and UNI will never be the rivalry that UND was.

To them, SDSU and UNI are the only rivalries they have ever known. They couldn't give a crap about UND.

Until we play UND again, how can we even talk about a rivalry?

Take a look at the Iowa Hawkeye_Iowa State Cyclown rivalry. They didnt play for YEARS and YEARS. But one school was always compared to the other in EVERYTHING. Iowa was elite and ISU was the cow college. Sound familiar?

Makes no difference what division. Unless thats something you feel the need to hang your hat on. The fact is they are in transition to D1. Regardless of that fact there will ALWAYS be comparisons between the two schools. You can say NDSU is better. But until the game is played its nothing more than mental masterbation.

I'm saying don't keep saying they are a bigger rival than SDSU or UNI because to the people that matter, ie the current team, there is no emotional attachment to UND.

Were you at the UND-NDSU VB game last year? Were you at the teammaker luncheon where UND was a topic before the game? Were you at the TM luncheon where Saul talks about UND? Where he said HE GETS IT and the players get it. Were you at the NDSU-UND VB game this year in GF? I guess you also werent at the TM luncheon after said loss to UND? Nope didnt think so.
There is more to this rivalry and the acceptance than you are willing to accept-acknowledge. Its there and it aint going away. The players are very well aware of it also.

I don't think when people call UND our biggest rival, that they only refer to who our football teams biggest rival is, or the students for that matter. It's a broad term that covers everything involved with the two universities. Obviously the football team isn't going to have an emotional attachment to a team they never play. But that doesn't mean our other athletic teams still don't look at UND as their biggest rival. Just because we're not in the same conferences anymore with them, our sports teams still want to beat them probably more than anyone else.

Everyone from the president on down at both universities know full well who the biggest rival is.

I always root against UND in every sport. I was in the Rocky Hager camp where a loss to those knuckleheads meant a "year of hell" until the next game.

Were you at the basketball game in the dome last December?

Why do you think our guys came out trying to dunk on them every chance they got? Why do you think it took until the 2nd Half for us to start dominating a team that normally we would rock from start to finish? Did you not hear the Sioux Suck Shit cheers from the Student Section?

The rivalry is alive and well. If UND ever came to the Dome for football, you can bet your ass that the students and players would know exactly what it meant to the fans. You think Grothman, Thorton, Richards, all of the North Dakota boys don't know how big that would be? If any player didn't know how big the game was all they'd have to do is wait til UND runs onto the field to more verbal attacks than our fans have ever thrown at anyone else. If I was Coach Bohl, I'd bring Rocky Hager in, and I'd let him tell the boys exactly how he feels about the state's online "Flagship" up north.

I agree with johnson, the current students and players would get it. The rivalry is alive and well, some people on BV just don't want to admit it.

Unfortunately, we got screwed at EWU, otherwise that crowd would have been electric. We win that game, or don't even play it (say we lose to MSU), and the Dome would have been hostile and abusive!

If the rivalry is still alive, that's awesome! It seems like our students still care, but do UND students still care about it? Maybe the UND students my wife talked with were isolated idiots..er I mean an isolated incident. Nobody ever said UND students were bright.

The rivalry is absolutely still alive. I can't believe this thread has gone on as long as it has. You ask any siouxge fan (excluding the hockey elitists) who their rival is and you know what the answer will be. Look at ANY state in the country that has a state and university school. Rivals.

Ohio & The Ohio State... I'm not familiar with that "rivalry", but they are on two VERY different levels and not sure if there is really a rivalry there. (Penn St & Penn also come to mind)

He posited correctly, which is good for him since usually his show is more known for his deposits if you know what I mean.

This thread reminds me of a "gossip" lesson my 7th grade teacher had us do. She would tell the first student closest to the door a random sort of thought, and it would then be passed on by whispering to the person behind that student, across to the next line and so on. By the time it got to the last person it was nothing even close to what was originally stated.

Here: "Behavior at the Gopher Game" now ='s NDSU football is more popular than UND hockey!! Leave it to BV!!!

Makes no difference what division. Unless thats something you feel the need to hang your hat on. The fact is they are in transition to D1. Regardless of that fact there will ALWAYS be comparisons between the two schools. You can say NDSU is better. But until the game is played its nothing more than mental masterbation.

The only people that want it back are the people with the old timey, Division II mentality. We actually have made progression without them, let's keep it that way and not regress.

You are channeling there devin. You may also want to know that dissing the old timers, associating the DII mentality to this group, and claiming regressive behavior on their part really typifies certain younger and fearful folks who surprisingly show that same DII / DIII mentality. There are too many folks in the ND / MN hinterland that do feel the Bison are fearful of the GFCCC. Others simply refer to the Bison as too arrogant to play. Your approach simply adds fuel to this fire.

Remember, a lot of the old timers you are pointing at are the same folks who called for a move UP in the late 70s. This was back when UND and UNI were our rivals and UNI moved up as did the Montana schools. Or was this before your time?

Who's to say they weren't all there to cheer the Bison on???? The former rivalry is dead.

This statement: "yes. Its huge."[sic] could just as likely refer to the Bison following.

Back to the topic at hand... Everyone in Section 210 was a perfect saint all throughout the entire game, even the asshat four rows back who took a disliking to me.

Four of us sat row 1 around the 25 yard line, Bison side. We stood up for the kickoff, this crazy old Gopher fan behind us, came down and threatened he would call security if we didn't sit down, plus he had some other choice words. I think he thought he was some sort of gopher fan hero, he was gonna put us in our place type attitude. Well we stood up anyway and he and others continued to harass us. They even bitched when we stood up on third down gophers. Funny thing happened though, a younger gopher fan hollered very loud at us for everyone around us to hear, " stand up and cheer all you want, these old f@ckers (gopher fans) are the reason we suck". The old crabby gopher fans around us rarely cheered, clapped or even showed any emotion and of course, they never stood up. It was like they were zombies.
