Part of the state crest or something...I think they are pretty cool. Definitely wouldn't wear them more than once a year though.

Unlike the Dakotas, Maryland has a real heraldic legacy.

The state flag is the coat of arms of the Calverts, Barons of Baltimore

Further and far more boring information here:

Some slightly less boring information here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baron_Baltimore

The helmets & shoulder patches were apparently an attempt to pay tribute to the Calverts by causing them to collectively spin in their graves.

Also, I think it's funny that George Calvert founded "Ferryland" and his son founded "Maryland"

The uniforms have pushed the Redsking QB controversy to the #2 seed on local sports yack. If you know anything about DC sports yack, that takes some doing. There's no middle ground on these things and its all people are talking about. Like 'em or lump 'em it's a huge marketing win for Maryland and Under Armor.

OT: No quality QB will go anywhere near the Shanahans after what they did to McNabb. It's about as bad as the Childress/Moss blow-up, or the KAAAHHHHHN/Rambis deal. You can't treat employees like that and expect to get good employees.

There are a lot of people in DC watching what happens with the Vikings this year, ready to treat it as a referendum on the Shanahan regime.

'Course, you know how the Shanahans and their supporters will spin it if McNabb has a good season: 'Hey, that benching in Washington was just the wake-up call he needed! Kyle and Mike are the reasons why he had such a good year.'
