My favorite Bison running back of all-time. I'd put Chad Stark a very close second. I just loved watching Tony break loose out of the veer. It was a work of art...as were the GREAT defenses that gave these guys the ball back consistently. It was one big, beautiful machine...like a Swiss watch.

Did I say 'most talented?' Nope

But these guys have the rings...and played at an FCS championship level...or higher.

I remember Tony having 1.2 million all-purpose yards one game my freshman year, on about 8 offensive carries and a few kick/punt returns. Dude was awesome.

Is it the NCAA HOF like Mike Favor or the Bison HOF?
Either way well deserved. I was in high school back in those days but I remember Satter better than anyone. Cannot believe he didn't make an NFL roster. I think the Jets signed him if I recall?

Had all the right moves but not NFL speed.

Most exciting back I ever saw play for the Bison! His ability to cut on a dime and change direction at full speed was unreal! What did he average, around 10 yards per carry! When he got the ball everyone stood up because you didnt want to miss somthing special!

If you didn't see him play in person, it's hard to understand how good he was. He was maybe a 4.6-4.7 guy, but had every other tool to be a 10-12 year NFL back. I still think that given the opportunity, he could've been very solid...an Emmitt Smith "type" guy.

Still #1 back in NDSU history. Congrats, Tony!

AGREED !! :D Back then everyone didnt stand up just because Satter got the ball, everyone was allready standing !! Those teams were the best ever to watch, they could turn a game on a dime . Tony still has the moves, he slices and dices his way through our tailgate every Saturday. Congrats Tony.

Congrats, Tony.
I remember that it seemed he never had anyone within 10 yards of him when he crossed the goal line. I think it had to do with our dive back and QB sucking in the entire defense and Tony getting the pitch with nothing but green in front of him. It was a thing of beauty and well deserved!

He always reminded me of Tony Dorsett.

Tony Satter would have been an All-American at any level, despite his perceived lack of speed. The thing about him is that his pad speed was the same as his 40 speed, he did not have to slow down to make his cuts, he had great field vision, and he used his eyes and head to fake people out, similar to a no-look pass in basketball. He knew a defender was coming from the side, he would act like he didn't, and when the defender came in to level him off, he would cut away at the last second. Someone link us to his long run in our 88 NC game, and you will see exactly what I mean.

So, let me get this straight:

Perhaps one of the most dominating and decorated running backs in NDSU history, who even happens to be from Fargo if I remember correctly, took 11 years after being done playing to be inducted? Am I missing something?

I think it was the Giants. I believe he came very close to making the permanent roster. A muffed punt at the end of the preseason might have been the final straw.

You mean 21 years, right--he finished in 1990. There is a mandatory wait period, which I think is 15 years--I'll check and get back to you.

Also, it took him one less year than me to get in  , if that says anything.

Nice!!

FYI, from NDSU HOF section:

The Bison Athletic Hall of Fame inducted its first class in 1972 and now has 238 members. Roy C. Pedersen founded the Hall and along with committee members Ed Graber and Del Johnson, is enshrined among the "Gallery of the Greats."

Athletes must be separated from the university for a minimum of 15 years. Athletic accomplishments and contributions to society after college are considerations for induction.

I don't think I ever saw Satter get tackled by a defender in front of him in the open field... heck, if there were two defenders, side by side, waiting for hm, he'd still beat them. The best they could hope for is to slow him down enough for pursuit to catch up.

Also a very tough guy... pretty sure he was plagued by upper ankle sprains for almost his entire career but even in big games where he could barely walk off the sideline, he'd still get 9 ypc. Just checked - in his two national championship games: 28 rushes for 327 yards (so that's 11.7 ypc when the trophy was on the line.)

Hell of a FB player. I remember playing pickup BB against him at the BSA back in the day. Very stout guy to say the least. He wasn't that great at handling the BB. Even I stole the ball from him two possessions in a row. :)

When I think of Tony Satter this is the TD run I think of (actually his last). Tony was my favorite Bison when I first became a Bison fan. I remember as a 7 year old going to the 1988 opener against Northern Michigan thinking that he had to be the best running back ever, and that the Bison were the best college football team in the world. Which of course we are!:) :)

Congrats to Tony!!

Close. He signed with the Giants. As I remember it, he had a case of fumblitis in the preseason and never made the final cut.

He was a grade behind me at Fargo South so I got to watch him in high school, too. I'm pretty sure he was a defensive back in addition to running back, kick returner, punt returner and might have also been our punter.

He also had fumbled during the game at least once.. With Parcells, that sealed his fate.

Must have been the game in Brookings against SDSU. He had five (?) touchdowns that day, IIRC. Road, confirm this, please.

Back then, I thought going to Brookings meant an easy win all the time. Times have changed (at least until 10-22-11, that is) in the 'easy' wins department.

I went to Fargo South, grew up across the street from him, had family barbeques and remember sitting with the neighborhood as we watched him play for the GIANTS. But really interesting to know you remember him better then anyone even though you couldnt remember wut NFL team signed him. Good memory!!

Tony is an all around amazing person! Was really thrilled when my father Sam Neis went into the Fargo South HOF in the same class as Tony!!

The whole concept...with Tony as a sophomore. What a great, great team. Check out the second one. Has a another big run by Tony. He could have played for any college team. With the right NFL team...a real player. CAS described it best. Watch the guy run. He knew exactly where he was, and where the defenders were. A work of art. And oh...if you needed a big play...he delivered.

There's a tackle by Charlie Stock and a short story about him at about 4:45 of the first vid. Worth watching and listening. Tells a lot about the attitude of this team. This team was loaded.

I've heard this from my Dad too. Always uses Tony as an example when he bitches about local kids, cough cough McGovern, qvale, going to big schools. Be a big fish in Devil's Lake (always getting bigger) and be a legend, or go be an ok fish in Sacagawea and get forgotten when you are gone..I'll take being the local legend in North Dakota every time.

Off topic...sort of...

What the heck ever happened to Tony's little brother Brock? He was also a beast for Fargo South. That '89 boys BB team could have beaten quite a few small college teams. They were REALLY good. I think Brock went to a DI school somewhere for track. Is that right? He was such a stud in HS and then I never heard from him again.
