Not sure what the deal is but Schmaltz, Januszewski, and Roesler all got put in the same heat (there were four heats) and all three made it to the semis. With 200 to go, Roesler was in 2nd and Schmaltz and Januszewski were in 4th and 5th but then they finished strong. Schmaltz 2nd, Januszewski 3rd, and Roesler 4th. Top 3 automatically go on to the next round so Roesler made it by posting the 8th fastest overall time. Schmaltz's time was 3rd fastest and Januszewski's was 6th fastest (their heat winner posted the fastest time so their heat was pretty fast.)

Christine advances to the finals with the 9th fastest time. The girl with the 8th fastest time was in heat 1 and finished 5th in the heat. Top 4 in each of the 2 heats advance. So a bit of a break for Schmaltz who finished 4th in heat 1 coming across the line at 2:02.92.

Laura Januszewski finished 7th in heat 1 at 2:04.88
Laura Roesler finished 8th in heat 1 at 2:05.56.

The video link will probably be up sometime tomorrow. I'll be intrested to see what caused the inflated times for the 2 Lauras.

Alysia Montano of Team Nike had the top qualifying time at 2:01.37

Didn't the 2 Laura's have personal bests that were 2-3 seconds better than what they ran yesterday?

I thought Laura Januszewski might have been a qualifier with a year of training under her belt.

Here are the videos of the 2 semi-final heats:

Laura Januszewski got off to a terrible start not making up any of the stagger on Moore in lane 3 (Laura was in 2). In fact despite being inside of her on the turn actually lost quite a lot of ground.
Also, the gal in lane 1 made up her stagger on Laura within the first 30 meters.
So, by the time they got to the cut in point Januszeski was dreadfully trapped in the back of the entire pack and never made much of an attempt to work toward the front.

At 300 meters in, Roesler appeared to have an opportunity to stay tight since the 2 leaders were not crowding her path on the inside of lane 1, but she didn't make any sort of move whatsoever.

Another impressive tidbit regarding Christine Scmaltz:

She is the ONLY collegiate in the Women's Senior 800 meter finals.

Ryun said he was in shock since 2:01.17 is the B standard for the Olympics.

Awesome job by the Forum today with their coverage! Two girls from small-town North Dakota finish their careers at the North Dakota State University and then go on to make a splash on the national scene at the US Track and Field Championships. Yep, sounds like exactly the type of story that should be buried in the digest in small print on page 2.

That 800 meter final was pretty fast.

Looks like USA is very, very strong in the 800 meters.

What a great job Christine did peaking for the US Championships. I think her time to get into the West regionals was around 2:07. To run a 2:01.17 less than 2 months later. Rediculous!!

The biggest reason that a 2:07 runner turns in a 2:01 is the the talent of the rest of the field. (see Laura Roesler in the 2008 Olympic Trials) She (Laura) hasn't sniffed that low of a time since. I know you know this so I'm not preaching, it's just amazing how running among studs can make you one too (at least for that race)
BTW....that's NOT taking anything away from Christine. You still have to keep up with that speedy pack so it is a terrific accomplisment and yet another proud Bison moment.
I, for one, never thought Hermannson's NDSU record would fall this soon.

Laura Roesler ran 2:03.12 this year at the NCAA West Region Preliminaries in Eugene which was just off her PR of 2:03.08 that she ran at the Jim Bush Invatational in LA just before the 2008 trails. At the trails she ran 2:04.03 in the quarterfinals.....just the facts!

Sorry. Didn't do my homework.
I stand corrected. I thought her time her time in the trials was 02 or 03 something.
At one point (I think a year ago) I thought that perhaps Laura peaked early as a lot of girls do. I must admit that my post was kind of a na na nana na thing. I think deep down I wish she'd stayed in Fargo.
I am ashamed.:paperbag:
