View Full Version : The Best Player Names in Bison History

Some guys have great names for whatever reason. They don't have to be great names for a football player (Mike Stonebreaker, Scott Studwell, Thane Gash) but it certainly helps. They could be cool names (Plaxico Burris, D'Brickashaw Ferguson) or they could be weird (Rolf Benirschke, Fred Biletnikoff, Jeff Siemon).

Here are mine for the Bison:

Garth Tschetter
Gunnar Gossard
Cyrus Lemon
Flint Flemming

Sorry for getting off the tracks. But, it's America!!

Flint Fleming
Gunar Gossard
Justin Juckem / Jeff Jerve
Mike McTague

Scott Stocynzki
Qurt Quenette (ok, so I cheated a little on that one)

Tim Popowski did student teaching out in West Fargo. I bet those little 5th graders about peed their pants when this huge guy walked into the room. His demeanor, when I met him, was great though.

The track team had a guy with a great name. His name was Landusky Hertz and he was from Montana where his family were loggers. Mark Waldera (Wally) who was the throws coach back then and also is responsible for whipping Mike Favor into shape during his early years nicknamed Landusky "The Manchild from the Promise Land." I don't know why he didn't play football, but he was about 6' 4" and 240 as a freshman. He was about 275 after Wally got a hold of him.

I'll vouch for Howdy, but what gets me is no one in four pages has made a mention of NINO ZEZZA. Granted, he was no hall of famer, but this is all about names.

Can coaches make the the list ? If so, Rocky Hager was always intimidating for a coaches name.

I don't recollect that name. It is classic. fill us in on his spot and time on bison football. I'm curious.:)

I always appreciate both the name and the nickname "Rocky". There were three in my HS at the same time Coach Hager was just up the road.

Nino Zezza played at the same time as Feeney. He was a WR who had a pretty good career considering that NDSU's offense was so run-heavy (plus he line up opposite Tim Strehlow.)

He cheated on a test in one of my art lecture classes. Got the proof straight from the prof.

(Note to Tony: This is not gossip, this is absolute quanitfiable fact. I can PM you with proof if you like. Coupled with the fact he is not on the team anymore means this post should be allowed. I would never make accusations or even post negative non-field-of-play truths about any current Bison athlete. I just want to make sure I'm not branded the same as Lakes in his dark days of BV posting.)

(Sub-note: The football team was in no way part of his cheating. The team had nothing to do with his actions.)

This list was only going to include FBS schools, but I couldn't resist letting one FCS name in at No. 24. You'll see why.

The Forum did a "Whatever Happened to Paul Hatchett" story in 2006, but that is long gone from the Forum archive, even for purchase. There does remain, however, a Bison Media Blog story written at the same time. You can pretty much piece together what happened.

http://bisonmedia.areavoices.com/2006/08/29/the-hatchett-saga/

When his football career was over, he disappeared from NDSU before graduating. Went to southern cities. Got involved in drugs big time. Did a stint in prison. No one knew his exact whereabouts in 2006, but they believed he was still hanging out around Savannah, GA.

I remember watching Paul when I was in college. Won a lot of games at running back for the Bison. Came right atcha and if he couldn't find a way through ya, he ran right over the top of you. It was a different era, but he was an exciting man to watch.
