Macho Man Randy Savage -- one of the greatest wrestlers of all-time -- died today in a car accident in Tampa, Florida TMZ spoke with Randy's brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 9:25 AM ... and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn.

Savage was 58.

Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase "Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh." Savage was so popular, he became the spokesperson for Slim Jim in the mid '90s ... and became virtually synonymous with the brand.

UPDATE: Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ ... Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median ... through oncoming traffic ... and "collided head-on with a tree."

Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.

Savage's wife was a passenger in the vehicle during the collision -- but survived with "minor injuries." She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated. According to officials, Randy and Lynn were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Cops say alcohol was NOT a factor.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

"Soaring with the eagles and slithering with the snakes, I've been everywhere in between, I am your friend, I am the Macho Man Randy Savage. Speaking from the heart, it's the Macho Man talking to you right now, let's rock, dig it, dig it! Freak out, Freak out, oooooh yeah! This is the way it is and I will be there when it happens, the past the present and the future all in one time. We're all gonna climb that mountain together and we are together forever, ooooh yeah!"

R.I.P. Macho Man.

I will snap a slim jim in your honor.

WOW, that was a shock. As a little kid, I used to follow the WWF in the old school 80's times. Savage was my fave for a time. Never liked Hulk too much cause everyone else liked him. Plus, I didn't like my role models telling me to brush my teeth and eat my vegetables. (LOL)

But Randy was something else. Had the coolest voice in my mind back then. "OOOOH YEEEEAH!!!!". Still remember that. He also did cameos on some of my favourite cartoon shows in the 1990's and 2000's.

Sad to see him go. RIP Randy.

I guess you didn't like, Mr. T, either. "Let that be a lesson... if you believe in yourself, drink your school, stay in drugs, and don't do milk, you can get work." (http://xfinity.comcast.net/video/best-of-snls-tv-funhouse-mr-t/130580368/)

Macho Man, Ric Flair, and The Ultimate Warrior were my favorite wrestlers as a kid and gave the best interviews and promos.

Watched an interview with Hulk Hogan and it sounds like Randy was a paranoid dude. I guess he built a fence around his house and wouldn't leave it unless absolutely necessary. He did say he's the best guy he ever worked with.

When I was a kid, Randy's Mother (aka Macho Mom) would always make sure that Randy would put aside tickets for when the WWF or WCW would come to Chicago. During a show in 1992 or 1993, me and my brother were actually granted the opportunity to go backstage. For the 6-year-old me, this was the most awesomest thing possible.

I don't remember what happened during the show, but I do have a vague memory of what happened when I was able to go backstage. I'm not sure of what my expectations were of going backstage, but at that point in my life I was sure of 3 things: Wrestling was 100% real, there were Good Guys who were super heroes, and there were Bad Guys that were super villains.

We were met backstage by some WWF people who were leading us into the locker room area, and we were brought to Randy to say hello. There were a bunch of other wrestlers around, which was really cool but there was one problem: the good guys were hanging out and being cordial to the bad guys! Seeing good guys like Brett Hart sharing laughs with bad guys like Jake "The Snake" Roberts was almost traumatic to see; like seeing your Dad french kiss your aunt. It simply wasn't supposed to happen.

I was sad, scared and confused. I gathered up the courage to ask why the Good Guys were friends with the Bad Guys. Randy said, "We're not. We're just tricking them. You'll see."

After this, a WWF rep was showing us some other areas of the backstage. I don't remember what we saw, but I know when we circled back to the area where Randy was, all of the wrestlers I had seen before were back in character. Bad guys were yelling at Good Guys about how they were going to kick their butt and Good Guys were holding each other back from attacking the bad guys.

This. Was. Awesome. It IS real! Of course it is!

Randy didn't know me too well, but he cared enough about a young fan and professional wrestling to keep the illusion and innocence alive.

While, as I said earlier, I cannot claim that we were particularly close, I do send my condolences to those in our family who were. He made a lot of people happy.

I think the Macho Man was one of my favorite wrestlers. Him and the Ultimate Warrior. Those 2 were crazy and jacked up all the time. I loved watching WWF back in the day and the Macho Man made it the most entertaining. Thanks to youtube the Macho Man is going to live on forever. Here's are a couple of my favorite and craziest clips. And yes that's Debo with him and Sensational Sherri in the first one.

When the new WWE All Stars came out, I thought to myself: What ever happened to the Macho Man? Most haven't left, Hulk, Flair, Sgt. Slaughter, others come back every couple months, Ricky the Dragon, George the animal, etc., but never the Macho Man. So, it doesn't surprise me that Hulk says he was paranoid. R.I.P Macho Man, now you are with your two true loves, Miss Elizabeth and Sensational Sherri! ;)

Yeah he's WWE had to come to his house to film a promo one time. He wouldn't do it anywhere but his house. Of course I have no way of knowing if this is true but I don't see how he'd lie. Here's the full interview (about 51 minutes) if you want to watch it. Really good stuff and I'm not even a pro wrestling fan http://vimeo.com/24060245
