This is the second year that there are no qualifying standards or regional qualifying rounds. Instead, they take the top 48 performances of the outdoor season from each region (east or west) and they compete in the NCAA Preliminary rounds. They will then advance to the championships in Des Moines by place.

They will announce the field tomorrow for the prelim rounds. I spoke with Lars yesterday and he said that the men have 5 and the women have 8 that will participate. He rattled off the names but I couldn't keep up.

Here is the POP (Proof of Performance) List that they will work off of so you can search for NDSU participants.

Haven't followed track closely on a national level...do we have anyone capable of placing high? Earning All-American Honors?

Our best bet is Whitney in either the multi or the long jump and Leslie in the PV.

Fairly good possibility that both Laura Roessler and Christine Schmaltz will be on the track together after the first round of the Women's West Region 800 meter run.

Regional Qualifiers

1. Anne Kesselring (Oregon) 2:02.44

6. Laura Roesler (Oregon) 2:04.24

13. Christine Schmaltz (NDSU) 2:05.81

If it happens, I'll go ahead and predict that both athletes will turn in season bests. There won't be that many in the stadium that will understand why, but those two would each have about a gallon of adrenaline flowing from the start.

Whitney squeaked into the NCAA Championships in the long jump!

She didn't get close to her personal best even.

Quite the log jam in Laura's heat at the half-way point.
At 400 meters all 8 women were within 9 tenths of a second from one another.

HUGE news in the Men's 110M High Hurdles!

Sophomore Matt Tezlaff breaks the 14 second mark setting a new school record at 13.99 seconds. (13th best time in the prelims) He advances to the quartefinals today.

It's always bugged me that this record wasn't in the 13's since I've seen a high school kid run 14.00. (of course, their hurdles are 6 inches lower...but still)

Grand Forks Red River alum, Ryan Todhunter running for the Gophers missed qualifying by .22 seconds (14.53).

This was really huge news. He followed it up with 14.00 and did not make nationals, but wow what a performance! I know what you mean about breaking the 14 second barrier, but that 6 inches is very significant (sounds naughty). Recruiting for the men's hurdles from high school to college is a lot like purchasing a race horse. Some schools even measure your inseem to see if you have the physical make-up for those hurdles. There are countless high school state champs that struggled to even travel in high school.

Schmaltz edged out Oregon's Laura Roesler both running in heat 3.

Schmaltz: 3rd in heat 3 @ 2:05.09 (9th overall) DNQ
Roesler: 4th in heat 3 @ 2:05.29 (10th overall) DNQ

Roesler's teammate Anne Kesselring advanced to the finals with the 5th best time in the semi-final @ 2:04.70

Darn close to having two North Dakotans in the NCAA Women's 800 Meter Final.

Whitney - gotta love that she had her best jump of the season (so far) in the Championships. Similar deal with Christine - except she notched a career best.

Going to be tough to pick a North Dakota female college athlete of the year: Amy Anderson? Whitney Carlson? Laura Roesler? Christine Schmaltz? Probably more on that list too.

If everything = getting noticed by the Bismarck Tribune, then maybe.

I'm actually not sure how the Female Athlete of the Year is picked (does it have to be a North Dakota native or can it be a person who attends a North Dakota college?)

Sorry for derailing the thread.

Anyway, Whitney Carlson is in the heptahlon today. Kick some ass!

Whitney's first 2 jumps in the finals were in the 19's so for her to pull off a 20'10" when she was just not feeling it was pretty good. The difference between 1st and 9th was only a foot which is pretty tight.

The Hept starts at one and the weather looks pretty ominous. I am out here with my whole family including my 11 week old boy. Gotta get him rootin' for the Bison as early as we can.

If Whitney wasn't feeling well*, that's even more amazing.

* I'm holding 2910Bison** directly responsible for that, btw, because I'm assuming that her not feeling well is a lingering effect of having seen him dance.

** And another one off my list! Only 397 active posters to insult to reach my goal!

Yes tons of rain right after Oregon's heat of the 4x400. They postponed the competition because it started to hail.

Whitney ran 13.75 for the hurdles and a low 24 for 200 so she's fine. Roesler ran 52.31 and led her team to victory. It should be a fun final.

What an athlete!

She must have set a school record too.

Whitney started the day with a 20' 10 long jump which put her in 6th place. She then dropped to 8th after a pretty good javelin. The 800 has been a frustrating race for her and her coaches since she runs 54 seconds in the 400 but has never broken 2:20. She pops a 2:14 800 and takes 5th. Wow, it was a lot of fun to watch.

She is such a neat kid that she won over former Olympians Dan O'Brien and Tanya Hughes. They cheered for her during the whole competition.

It was a fun day! The Women's 400 hurdles and the Men's open 400 were virtual ties since they had to go to a thousandth of a second to determine the winner.

No disrepect intended for those gals you mentioned. Other smaller schools around the country that recognize this team must wonder where all of these great track and field athletes are coming from in a program that's only been division 1 for such a short period of time.
