Mr. Burgundy has informed me that Brett VandenBergh, a 6'5" junior forward from De Pere, Wisconsin, has verbally committed to the Bison men's basketball program for the 2012 season. VandenBergh is a high school teammate of Chris Kading (joining the Bison in 2011) and the sibling of former Bison volleyball star Brooke VandenBergh. VandenBergh also had a scholarship offer (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/player-Brett-VandenBergh-115746) from South Dakota State.

VandenBergh is regarded (http://www.wissports.net/team.asp?pageID=8&sportID=1&playerID=124713&tid=92.) as a "physically strong wing player who can stroke it from downtown as well as connect on mid-range jump shots."

VandenBergh and Kading led De Pere to the runner-up spot in this season's Wisconsin Division 1 high school tournament. The Redbirds lost a 3-overtime heartbreaker in the final to traditional powerhouse Madison Memorial. VandenBergh was outstanding in the post-season, and he was widely considered one of the top players in the state tournament. Many observers felt that he clearly outplayed highly touted Memorial star Junior Lomomba in a head-to-head matchup in the final.

I have personally seen VandenBergh play at a summer camp. He brings a high degree of toughness and vocal leadership to the table. He definitely has a D-1 body and he physically reminds me of Brett Winkleman--after Winks had about 3 years in the NDSU weight room. He played on an outstanding high school team this year with a couple of excellent seniors, but VandenBergh often was assigned to guard the opposition's best player, such as Lomomba of Madison Memorial and even future Bison PG Joel Lindberg of Superior in the state quarterfinal.

VandenBergh is currently listed on the roster (http://www.fivestarbasketball.com/teams/wisconsin-playground-warriors-17u) of the nationally ranked Wisconsin Playground Warriors (AAU) program.
His teammates include wing JP Tokoto (committed to North Carolina), forward Sam Dekker (committed to Wisconsin), and point guard Bronson Koenig (offers from North Carolina, Wisconsin, Marquette, etc.), among other notables.

This is an outstanding start on the 2012 recruiting class for Saul Phillips and his staff. I anticipate that the Bison will have a total of two scholarships available in that class to replace seniors-to-be Eric Carlson and Drew Lundberg, so there may be only one more spot available in that class.

It is another great day to be a Bison!!

Was a good interview with Brett and his high school coach tonight on Izzo's Den. No doubt he's glad to be a Bison!

This has been a lock for a long time, but I am glad he made the verbal. This is a kid I really wanted. He is TOUGH, and that is what this team needs. He will play alot/mostly at the Small Forward spot and give this team added toughness. I saw him play this summer and he looks like a man already. He loves to compete. Very complete player. I think he has the leadership abilities that we need. Exciting recruit. Good kid too. Welcome to NDSU.

The number I read was 208. That said, I've seen his height listed everywhere between 6'3 and 6'6.

Great get and he's the type of kid we need to have. In the words of Burgandy, "He's a Dude!!!" I was wondering if his sister's boyfriend ever made a play to lure him away?

Welcome to NDSU, Brett!

what's his 40 time?

If he's near 210 by the end of his junior year in high school, it seems that he could be a 230 lb tough as nails guy by the end of his college career but his 40 time could slow down a little.

Per the Kolpack areavoices blog, his coach states he is almost 6'6 and 208. Trust me, he is really put together. Especially for a kid that age. I have been wanting a tough guy for a while, so this is good.

Yeah based on the pictures I've seen of this kid he looks ripped, he is gonna be great for this team especially on the defensive end. He's the kind of guy we need, to take those thin, lanky punks from ORU that play on the wing and push em around a bit. We didn't have a guy physical enough last year to guard a guy like Albert Young, this is the kind of kid that can do just that. Unfortunately Brett won't get her until young is graduated, but he's gonna be a solid contributor to this team down the road.

These incoming recruits and our freshmen and sophomores make me want to move back to Fargo so I can see more than 2 game a year!

Love this quote in the Forum today by his AAU coach:

“He’s a skilled kid but his greatest attribute is he leads really well,” said Ritchie Davis, his AAU coach. “With the team we have with several high-major kids, make no mistake, Brett VandenBergh leads our team.”

Leader needed, leader found!

When are we gonna be fortunate enough to have one of these solid kids go through a 2-3 inch growth spurt early in their NDSU career? A guy like this at 6' 8" would be unreal or Kading/Bjorklund at 6' 10".

Has anyone noticed the ESPNU Super 60 icon by Brett's name in our commit listing for 2012. He doesn't have a rating yet, so what does this imply? Is he seriously a top 60 player in the 2012 class?

It will be updated, he could remain there, move up considerably, or fall considerably. Recruiting analysts don't really focus on rankings until their senior year when they see the majority of all the players.

What happened most likely is someone saw Brett play AAU when they were watching some upper tier AAU teams and he stood out enough to warrant a ranking.

Either way I'm sure he's a very solid player, and with still a year left of high school will only get better.

I think that was placed there by mistake, because the top 60 are all rated 94 or higher when you click on the icon.

he's not in the current super 60

...and we should be thankful, because if he was there would be no chance we would ever see him at NDSU. I am very excited about seeing Brett in a Bison uniform in 2012!

Doesn't a 40 mean they have not even ranked or looked into that player?
