With UNO's impending move into the Summit, UNO intends to drop football and wrestling. I can see football but wrestling is one of the best D2 programs having won 6 out of the last 8 NCs. It would have been a very good fit in the WWC.

Too bad!

I guess they are going to add men's golf and soccer......lol

Horsepoop.

UNO wrestling was losing $400k a year in an athletic department that is on the brink of collapse.

It has little to do with Title IX.

I've heard of going out on top, but win three straight titles and bail is a whole new level of out-on-top-ed-ness.

I thought the wrestling program was not a drain on the athletic department down there. The Kaufman-Brand Open makes their wrestling program money and I thought their coach raised a lot of outside money to fund the program.

There is an article at theguillotine.com that says as much. I guess their FB program was the one that lost the most money.

D1 wrestling only funds 9.9 schollies.....too bad they cannot find a way to keep it going....esp since it is the best D2 program out there. They would have been a great fit into the WWC.

They bring in $100k and dole out $500k. You do the math.

Again, very few sports actually float.

A USA Today article posted online today said their wrestling budget was 250K and would have to get to 500K to be competitive at D1.

Too bad for such a tradition rich program.

Does the Summit League mandate a certain number of sports that each school needs to participate in? The additions of other sports at the expense of wrestling suck. At least with wrestling there is fan base (not huge, but a whole lot more than men's soccer!).

Wow didn't know it was that much. Makes more sense now . Hopefully they can get the funding.

Bison Illustrated article on the topic

http://www.bisonillustrated.com/s.php?s=600

College Athletics: Is winning everything?

Preview: "There are the redundant clichés in sports that winning is everything. There is late college football coach Red Sanders saying “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.” Or it’s Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis’s motto of “just win baby.”

On college campuses across the country winning influences everything from recruiting to revenue to coaches keeping jobs. That’s the simple mindset."

LOL, maybe NDSU could have an annual "Rowing of the Red" during flood season. How fun might that be? People hitting random things in the river...

As long as they (don't) use casket covers as boats.

Authorities stop casket cruise on Red (http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/316459/)

Saw a bit of Maryville on Google Street View.

Kinda of a crappy town, but they have that one 4th-rate college there, so I guess they have that going for them...

again, Maryville, MO is the home of Northwest Missouri State, and is for all intents and purposes a shithole with a Burger King. NOT the same as Maryville University which is in the west suburbs of St Louis, in a very affluent area if I do say so myself...

Pretty good story on UNO on Outside the Lines today. This reaffirms my hope they get their ass beat in every sport from now on. You may have had to dump the programs but at least be up front and non-douchebag about it. Like the guy on the piece said, "If you have nothing to hide, why not tell us?" Didn't know their AD was Trev Alberts, makes a lot of sense. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=6506991

That's actually a pretty low standard. From what I remember from my one trip to Maryville, it's a nicer town and they also have a better football stadium too.
