I've been trying to figure out the real record in the NDSU vs Montana State series of several years now. Thanks to this year's game I took another shot at.

Here's Montana State's game day notes:

http://www.msubobcats.com/documents/2010/12/2/FB_Gm_Notes__10__12.NDSU.pdf?id=513

Here's the excerpt I'm interested in:

Both NDSU and Montana State say the series record was 13-20 (far and away NDSU's worst record in a series with 10 or more games), but I look at every score Montana State lists and every score NDSU lists and I see the series as being 12-21 going into the last game and now it's 13-21.

Can anybody see my mistake? Even I add up there home v away game totals I come up with 12-21 (now 13-21 thanks to NDSU's playoff victory.) BTW, NDSU has only gotten 12 home games in a 34 game series which probably goes a long way to explaining the abyssmal series record.

Also, the circled scores are scores in which NDSU and Montana State have published different scores (although the results are the same.) I'd like to find out which scores are correct at some point.

1977 game: Montana State says 35-22, NDSU 35-23
1922 game: Montana State says 48-0, NDSU 54-0

My initial guess is that playoff games aren't counted in the series record. That would explain them having 20 wins instead of 21 (1976 we met them in Fargo in the playoffs), but can't figure out where our extra victory came from.

It's simple, those records were burned last month in that fire on campus....along with the 1994 NDSU Baseball roster.

The Montana Colleges have had some interesting name changes over the years. I think U of MT may have been called Montana State at one time... but I am too lazy to look it up. That might have something to do with it.

My father-in-law played for NDSU before WWII and was still pissed off until the day he died about the 1940 game. When he heard the name 'Montana State' mentioned he always said the same thing "Those cheatin' bastards". Classic.
