Just for fun, if NDSU took part in this year's Big 10 championships, where do you think they'd have finished?

Heck, I've got no idea. The Big 10 is a very balanced conference; a mere 122 points won it even though the Big 10 has two or three more events in their championships.

Going by results, NDSU's Brost could have won the pole vault, Carlson the long jump and pentathlon, and Tollefson the high jump. That's 40 points for NDSU and -40 for the Big 10 right there. Killoran would have scored some points and so would Amy Jo Thorne (what a senior season for her!) Beyond that, points would have been pretty hard to come by - Deborah John in the hurdles maybe.

NDSU would have definitely made some noise.

Gather all the times, heights and distances of NDSU athletes, put them into the Big Ten scoring, add up the points for NDSU, subtract the necessary points for the Big Ten teams, and get back to us asap--thanks!!

That doesn't sound like as much fun as guessing.

no no it's still a guess, since the track would be different (not home turf advantage) and when presented with competition some of those Bison may have been beat.

DO IT!!!

Actually, I think some times would be better for NDSU against better competition... take the 800m.

NDSU's men would have to fight for every point.

Women? They'd do pretty well. Here's what I have for scores for Day 1:

NDSU 32
PURDUE 31
OH ST 28.5
MICH ST 27
WISC 22
INDIANA 14
MINN 13
PENN ST 8.5
IOWA 8
ILLINOIS 6
MICH 3
(Northwestern doesn't like track)

Five events into Day 2 (cheated on the 800 a bit):

NDSU is in 4th with only 5 events to go:

OHIO ST 71.5
MINN 50
PENN ST 47.5
NDSU 46
MICH 44
ILLINOIS 40
MSU 40
PURDUE 39
IOWA 32
WISC 24
INDIANA 19

There is a lot of ways that you can approach this. If you approach it like its our nationals we would put our best athletes in their best events and let the chips fall where they may. The points come from the LJ, the Pent, TJ, and the HJ with Toni taking 3rd with her career best indoors. We might eek out some points in the 800 if we put Britney (sp) in there. But Amy Jo, and all our sprinters don't score. We would have a problem getting to 50 points.

I love my Bison, but this is the Big 10. We would have to fight not to take last. But since these ladies are full of piss and vinegar, I would predict that we take 8th place or somewhere around there.

Final Tally (600 meter and Distance Medley removed because the Summit doesn't have them)

6th place by my biased tally. Big 10 has some fast chicks but NDSU matches up very well in middle distance and jumping events. No team can overcome getting skunked in the weight and other running events though.

OHIO ST 109.5
MINN 70
PENN ST 67.5
ILLINOIS 61
PURDUE 59
NDSU 56
MICH 54.5
INDIANA 49
MSU 46.5
IOWA 40
WISC 33

Need to get Roesler in as a guest runner to crack the top 3. :)

I love your optimism. The Summit does have the D Med and we would have taken last by nearly 20 seconds. Sorry but there is no way that we do better than 8th. And keep in mind that this is a conference that is not known for track.

Well, there was a reason I picked the Big 10 instead of the SEC. :)

So with the Distance Medley Relay, NDSU slips one place:

OHIO ST 109.5
MINN 78
PENN ST 67.5
MICH 64.5
ILLINOIS 61
PURDUE 59
NDSU 56
INDIANA 53
MSU 46.5
IOWA 46
WISC 35
Northwestern: No Team.

Ya know what? I'm fine with that. I think that would be a very real possibility.

Great discussion and thanks for putting all of that together, Tony. I actually had the same thought but really didn't want to take the time to figure all of that out.

Let's say the men could finish eighth in the Big Ten and I think the women could finish evern higher (maybe 5-6). Considering how good of a track conference the Big 10 is to think we can finish in that range is outstanding.

Hypothetically speaking (which of course we have been) you finish in the middle of the pack in the Big 10 and recruiting improves and you build your program up. At some point we could probably compete with those schools. The teams have gotten better since moving into the Summit and moving into the Big Ten would do the same. But anyway...

We already compete with Big 10 Schools for most of our recruits for men and women. Our coaches have great relationships with them and in the case of Jennifer Nagberi we are contacted about athletes.

Tony got me curious about something when he mentions the SEC. Here are the top 10 teams in the national meet for men and their conferences for 2010:

1. Texas A&M- Big 12
2. Florida- SEC
3. Oregon- Pac 10
4. Arizona State- Pac 10
5. Southern California- Pac 10
6. LSU- SEC
7. Kansas- Big 12
8. Stanford- Pac 10
9. Virginia Tech- ACC
10. South Carolina- SEC

19. Wisconsin- Big 10
