Bison Track and Field: Summit League Championships invade the BSA

Preview: "A large number of North Dakota State University’s student body may not realize the school features both men’s and women’s track and field programs.

An even larger number of students may not realize the team’s have an entire indoor season of competition."

Any observant person would quickly notice the numerous Summit League Championship banners on the north wall inside the BSA. Banners that you can actually read without a telescope, I may add!

Good luck to the track teams!

Love those banners ++++ Cadillac they are awesome..

And there should be no reason we can't add another two more banners to that after this Sunday and Monday.

Huh, supposedly you can watch this on All Access but all I've been getting is "Please Stand By."

tony

Ah, maybe it was between sessions because it's on.

NDSU looks very strong in the Heptahlon and Whitney Carslon crushed the pentathlon - went over 4000 pts and ran a 2:22 800m (wonder what she's going to have left for the other events she is in.) Killoran took 3rd.

North Dakota State Univesity

what the heck, Fargo South High School? thats wrong, right? I mean, maybe the Summit officials assumed it was a HS track facility?

Kinda hard to tell what's going.

Pretty sure that:
Schanandore broke Oakland's spirit in the Distance Medley Relay.
Guy's distance medley relay cruised
I think two NDSU guys are duking it out with two SDSU guys in the pole vault.

tony
02-27-2011, 10:20 PM
Ah, spoke too soon about the pole vault, I think the SDSU guys are done but there's still a Oral Roberts (I think) guy vaulting - and, holy crap, is he good.

nothing has refreshed on the live stats page for awhile. *sigh*

Has there been anything to update?

Toni Tollefson won the high jump (5' 10 1/2) for a new Bison record.
Amy Jo Thorne rocked the field in the 3000.
Guys are running the 200 meter prelims right now.

SDSU will be hanging around NDSU on the women's side... probably only down 15 or so.

And for you folks that don't think track is exciting, you haven't watched SDSU long jump... kept worrying that they were going to land short of the pit (yeah, that's some track smack.)

Bison05
02-28-2011, 12:50 AM
Looks like the women picked up some big points in the long jump, pentathlon and picked up quite a few event titles. They are in good shape. Especially after the Schmaltz-Schanandore buzzsaw hits tomorrow in the 800 and mile (should be 36 points right there between those two).

Nice run by the men's DMR. Hopefully Rud and Weston can go 1-2 in the Hep. The men's competition could be very interesting by day's end tomorrow.

Bison05
02-28-2011, 12:52 AM
The stats might say Fargo South HS just because that's who NDSU is going to post those results. It's the same system the North Dakota state high school meet uses. It was probably just neglected to get changed. But yeah I had noticed that too.

Worked the meet today. Pole vaulters all three set prs. Oral Roberts vaulter is one of top 5 vaulters in the country. Good efforts by the Bison teams.

That is extremely encouraging to see. Very nice day for both Bison team's. That is especially true for the men. I think the women's side is all academic at this point.

Some more highlights from the Women's side:

The 60 meter trio have the top 3 times going into the finals but also:

Deborah John - fastest time in school history
Jennifer Nagberi - tied for second-fastest time in school history
Antoinette Goodman - fourth-fastest time in school history (only 3 hundredths of a second slower than the old school record.)

Whitney Carlson broke the pentathlon record and the long jump record.

Toni Tollefson broke the school high jump record.

The women also set four league record (high jump, long jump, pentathlon, and the Distance Medley Relay.)

Whitney Carlson is well on her way to being named Summit League Field Athlete of the Year once again. Her name deserves to be among those discussed for Summit League athlete of the year for all sports. She has put together an absolutely remarkable college career. One of the track team's best, if not thee best, ever.

The name on the software cannot be change because that is who it is licensed to. Even though our people are running the meet we are using their Hytech software with the Live Results feature.

I saw Toni go over 5'9.25" and 5'10.5" and and she looked great. It was bitter sweet since she broke my wife's 18 year old record, but I got to meet her and she was very respectful. I was happy for her since it was becoming a monkey on her back and now she can go after 6 feet.

tony
02-28-2011, 07:47 PM
Men just did 1-3-7 in the 800 meters (really hard to tell though - thought NDSU had four runners in the final.)

The guys went 1-2-3 in the mile earlier today but I missed it.

tony
02-28-2011, 07:58 PM
Heh, Whitney Carlson is about the only Bison runner I can recognize... her and Jennifer Nagberi just went 1-2 in their heat of the 200. Too bad they weren't in the fast heat with Antoinette Goodman... hey, AG just won that heat! At least, I think she did - due to the camera angle, her lane was not visible at the finish line.

Bah... they say that Goodman lost by .02...

Double-edit: Now they've got it fixed. Goodman won with a 24.78 - that's in the top 5 all-time for NDSU.

However, not to rip on sdsu but they do a slow clap everytime one of their guys jumps. You would giggle.

Wondering if that mens 800 meters I saw earlier was really the 1000 from the heptathlon? I know how to count laps but the camera didn't show the first part of the race.

You can watch it on All Access.

Hoply crap what a third leg by Jackson in the 4x400... he got the baton when the other guy was already on the straight-way and he still caught... unfortunately, not nearly enough distance to hold off ORU's anchor dude. ORU got 25 points out of the 400 compared to NDSU's 1, btw - would have been pretty amazing to beat them.

Wow. I thought he was shorter than that (must've just looked taller.) :)

Nice leg by a freshman then!

Not sure what that ORU runner was doing... he was looking back so much that he was practically running sideways.

Donte was named freshman of the year. 48.5 split. Congrats Bison on winning the titles. Coach Larson and Godfrey coach of the year. Great efforts by the Bison men and women. I was glad I got to see it in person. As I was a meet official.

Summit League, you just got pwned. Again.

This is a goofy conference for track. They only allow a roster of 22 for the conference meet, which is less than what they allowed in the NCC, and the coaches are not willing to even listen to a conversation about increasing the numbers for more to participate.

Wow. Do they have a similar limit for outdoor?

Also, did NDSU's emphasis on multi-event athletes spring from that rule?

Yes, I believe the outdoor roster is 25. The emphasis on the multi-events sprang from the hiring of Stevie Keller.

In the NCC you could bring 25 athletes to the indoor conference meet and 30 to the outdoor meet. I can't imagine the Summit League changing their numbers since it would just lead to an even bigger domination. Could you image another three to five athletes on NDSU's rosters this year? 300 points?

In the NCC outdoor in 2003 we scored 306.

Yeah even with 25 and 30 we were still leaving some points home. If Lars didn't think you could place he wouldn't bring you, plain and simple.
