A former North Dakota State University cross country coach was killed Oct. 6 while on a bicycle trek in Bay County, Fla.

Roger Grooters, 66, a Bison Hall of Famer, was on a 3,200-mile, cross-country ride to raise money for victims of the Gulf oil spill when he was hit by a pickup truck on the shoulder of a road and thrown from his bicycle, according to a release from the NDSU Athletic Media Relations department.

I always thought that Greg Grooters, local administrator and father of track standout Ellie Grooters, was the son of Roger Grooters. But I guess that I was wrong. When looking at Roger's obituary, Greg nor his sister Carla was not listed so I guess I was wrong. I am sorry for bringing this up.

I may be way off but I thought Greg was the son of long time professor and coach at Valley City State University, Larry Grooters. ;)
