A leatherneck is a slang term applied to the US Marines dating back to when they were forced to where highnecked leather collars to give them a miltary bearing. It was discontinued due to the high incidence of neck wounds and decapitation from swords.
Now the Bison certainly respect the US Marines but the damn ugly dogs they brought with them to the plains of ND is another story. These dogs with leather collars and spikes came along because nobody else wanted them-they are simply too ugly and worthless to do anything but be a mascot for the leathernecks.
Initially they were tolerated by the Bison. Soon they started to run together in a pack. They started crapping all over the prairie grass and pissing everywhere. Then they decided they really owned the prairie and decided to get rid of the Bison. Having to start somewhere they decided to wait for the smallest, slowest Bison to separate himself from the Herd. When he did they tried to attack him and take him down. Little did they know the rest of the Herd was waiting for this to happen. When it did, the Herd turned on these ugly looking dogs and stomped and gored them and kicked their ass. For the strength of the Herd is the Bison and the strength of the Bison the Herd.

I don't think it was discontinued because of the neck wounds and decapitation. That's what it was designed to help prevent. I was in Boson this week and toured the USS Constitution museum in Charlestown. They have several rooms to walk through and one of the rooms had a replica of the U.S. Marine uniform worn at that time (I think early 1800s) and showed an actual leatherneck. Kinda cool to see what the heck it was.

Um,...didn't you hear? They had to change their name cause PETA had a real problem with "leather" being in their name. Welcome to: the RUBBERNECKS! Why didn't this chicken cross the road? Cause the Herd was coming... ;)

Or for us 30+ guys, it was one of the G.I. Joe characters back in the day.
