I've been listening to these and the Scottie Hazelton interview might have been the most interesting.

Biggest problems on defense last year: Not running to the football and didn't force any turnovers and letting the other team convert some many third downs.

Strengths: Gratzek, Boyer, LBs & secondary all returning (had to start two freshmen in the secondary last year.) Said the Cyrus Lemon is the leader of the defense - had very good things to say about him.

How to improve: More zone and reverse the trend of not getting to the football.

For those who like tradition, they started this year showing clips from as far back as 1986 to show what Bison defense is all about.

I like THAT! For some of these players, "tradition of excellence" means we beat the Gophs 3 years ago.

that was the highest point of their program. undefeated and unanoymous #1 team in a Division 1 FCS poll... Destroying Central Michigan and Minnesota in the span of a month. a Bowl team and a Big 10 team in their house.

I remember Cyrus taking one to the house two years ago. Hopefully we can see more of that this season

I have to comment that Preston Evans is very articulate.

I would like to see two things return: EVERYONE on defense runs to the football on every play, and EVERYONE wears their helmet until the final horn.

It seems like the California players speak more like midwest folks (their accent) compared to players from south/east states. Yes . . . all three were very well spoken.

I think we need to lean on Veldman this year, he is a unique talent and needs to get the ball with regularity. On several plays from last year, the DBs just look up and think the ball is overthrown, and Veldman snatches it out of the air. He should be heavily utilized the next 2 years.

Perhaps he has seen some marked improvement. For my part, (granted, mostly on my computer screen) I remember seeing lots of Cyrus' lack of effort last year. I remember lots of walking around near the action, often with hands on hips between plays. I commented on it during some gametime threads. Seemed at the time that the feeling was common on BV.

Anyone else' thoughts? Just youth last year?

While I agree with you, any idea why he is second string behind Smith? A message from Bohl to the young man?

Smith is a better blocker, and tougher than Veldman.
