A lot of bad news coming out of the IUPUI women's basketball program with this story (http://www.indystar.com/article/20100727/NEWS14/7270348/1004/SPORTS/Emotional-abuse-at-IUPUI?GID=PmF2srAYhkXNlxRSlH9EezUVOp2zAv7ZRRQ7OXLZ Ess%3D). This was kind of easy to believe watching Shann Hart's behavior on the sidelines the last few years.

Coach Shann Hart violated NCAA rules by requiring basketball activities -- practice, film study, weightlifting -- in excess of 20 hours per week. Time logs required by the NCAA, obtained by The Star through a public records request, show glaring omissions and questionable verification.

Coaches routinely watched recruits scrimmage against current players -- a violation of NCAA rules -- through a window outside the gym
Hart repeatedly and publicly humiliated players, including handing out a framed "award" -- in front of the entire team -- to the player with the worst grade-point average.

Hart probed the details of her players' personal lives, including sexual orientation, once asking a player, "Do you like girls?"

Last season after a loss, Hart gave her college athletes children's "Happy Meals" for their post-game meal.

Wow. I hate to say it about a conference-mate, but that's a program that might deserve the death sentence. They've already got massive NCAA problems and horrible APRs across the board*, and the AD actually supports this ()itch? And IUPUI's president actually sits on one of the highest committees in the NCAA. There had better be a lot of firings in the next six months.

*Only one sport is currently under sanctions(MBB), but 4 sports are in the 1st-10th percentile within their sport, and only 4 sports are among the top half of DI (2x 50th-60th & 2x 60th-70th). As a department, that's pretty horrible.

This is a bit reminiscent of Chicago State 'round about the time of their 'quit or be fired' exodus from the MidCon.

Not as bad, but it's in the same league.

Its hard to believe that in this day and age coaches dont realize that you just cant do crap like that.

You know, it's pretty disgusting that Hart circulated rumors of a failed drug test to explain why Whitted was off the team.

the big difference is that IUPUI is a legitimate institution of higher education.

With their c. 34% 6 year UG graduation rate, I'm not so sure, even about that.

The athletic department, at least, needs to be dismantled and rebuilt. That 28 players could leave in 4 years (that's 1/2 of the scholarship allotment per year-though not all players were scholarship players), without producing any serious inquiry by the AD... That multiple player complaints to the AD did not result in any serious investigation..... That compliance log fraud was a routine occurrence... ON TOP of the actions of the rogue academic adviser that led to the major sanctions imposed earlier this year......

And the chancellor is on the executive committee of the NCAA????????

Small correction. It wasn't 28 players, but 28 players and assistant coaches. 19 of the losses were scholarship players. I don't think the article said how many of the 28 were coaches.
