If he did truly run 4.5 and 4.47 in the 40 then Paschall put himself squarely back into the mid-to-late round discussion.

Maybe if more than 2 teams showed up for it though. I'd say he is still going to be a FA addition after the draft. Not a bad way to go.

He probably ran a little faster than at the combine but they use a different timing method at the combine which leads to more accurate times than the handheld they use at most prodays. Proday times are usually faster.

Either way great job Bison and best of luck to Pat. I truly believe he'll get his shot and thats all a guy can ask for. Keep making us proud guys.

There's lots of schools that never even got a PRO DAY.... I'm just saying..

A lot of times schools will combine their prodays depending on the amount of participants. NDSU and the sue have had their together before. There usuaully will also be a few players from other surrounding schools that participate as well such as Mayville or Valley City. Its really all about numbers.

I remember last year trying to compare Heckendorf and JaRon Harris's 40 times from their pro days to the 40 times ran by other WR at the combine and kept being told that the indoor tracks that SDSU & NDSU have are a much faster surface than what is used at the combine.

Not sure if there is truth to that, but I guess it would make sense after seeing Pat improve his time two tenths of a second.

I don't know about the surface but the timing method is different. Combine is stopped electrically where most schools prodays are hand timed. Hand timed 40's tend to be faster. I suppose it could have to do with the surface but am guessing it has more to do with the timing method.

You're both right. The hand timed 40 is going to be faster than the electronic just due to human error. As far as the surface, that plays in too. The FargoDome carpet is the fastest turf out there since there is next to no give. Whereas the turf at Indy is what we hope to get in the Dome. Still good but not as fast. So between both of those that probably makes up the difference between 40 times.

The main thing though for most positions is what is the difference between a 4.6 and a 4.8. NOTHING. For RB yes you want the guy to go the distance if he gets through, but that happens maybe twice a year. That's where .2 can come into play. But it's more about hitting the right hole and get as many yards as you can. Or when .2 means next to nothing.

This is a common misconception. Electronic times and hand times - on the same surface - are virtually identical because the electronic time begins on the runner's start, and the hand time begins on the whistle/gun.

The 40 meter hand timed sprint correction factor is .16. http://www.physicaleducationupdate.com/public/555.cfm. So, a 4.5 second time is more like 4.66 seconds.

For electronic combine times, the clock does not start until the runner begins the sprint, which is about a .15 second advantage when compared to starting on the gun. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Who_is_the_world's_fastest_runner_in_the_40-yard_dash. So, a 4.5 second time is more like 4.65 seconds, if the time had begun on the whistle/gun.

So, a hand timed 40, starting on the gun, is almost identical to an electronically timed combine 40, beginning on the runner's start.

PP's Combine 40 yard sprint was on Field Turf, which is soft and spongy, absorbing some of the runner's forward energy. I believe that the NDSU Pro Day 40 yard sprint is on Astro Turf, which is considerably harder than Field Turf, and therefore faster.

I agree. I believe that it likely has more to do with the methodology vs. the surface.
