Randi Parks pitched the first game.
Freshman Whitney Johnson won her first game in the 2nd game. (Whitney graduated from high school in December)

Portland State was picked to win their conference so that was a decent win. Northridge was picked 5th in the Big West.

Things really ramp up with Arizona though, they were preseason #6 in the country.

That second game sounded pretty weird:

North Dakota State 5th - McKenzie singled to center field (2-0). Fraijo
to p for Pagano. Lynn walked (3-2); McKenzie advanced to second. Mortensen
fouled out to 3b, bunt (1-0). Pipkin reached on a throwing error by p, advanced
to third on the error (3-2); Lynn scored, unearned; McKenzie scored, unearned.
Pipkin, unearned. Victa struck out swinging (2-2). Rivera popped up to 2b
(0-2). 3 runs, 1 hit, 1 error, 0 LOB.

So did Pipkin round the bases on a bad pitch? Or did she steal home after reaching third on a bad pitch?

It looks like Pipkin might have scored by stealing home. The way that the play by play is written, it looks like a period separates each play.

If so, not surprising the way Darren coaches.

They got the game story up on gobison now....

Maryssa McKenzie led off the fifth inning with a single and moved to second when Lynn received a walk. With one out, Pipkin reached on a throwing error that chased home McKenzie and Lynn, and eventually allowed Pipkin to circle the bases.

looks like to me that she struck out swinging but the pitcher threw a bad pitch so she reached base and the opposing team kept throwing the ball around which lead to her eventual score.

Heck, I'm still baffled - Pipkin doesn't show a stolen base in the season stats. That must have been the Mother of Bad Pitches because Northridge was only charged with one error.

Chmeilewski with a 7 inning grand slam. She could carry this team in 2010. Let's hope the pitching stays hot, that's the key. Darren has taught this team how to win close games. Arizona next . . hopefully it doesn't end early.

Late Charge Costs 'Cats Against Bison
Ohio falls to strong North Dakota State squad to conclude Kajikawa Classic

http://www.ohiobobcats.com/sports/w-softbl/recaps/021310aaa.html

TEMPE, Ariz. - A last-inning North Dakota State charge cost Ohio as the 'Cats fell 5-0 to a very strong Bison squad to wrap up the final day of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Paige Kemezis and Alexis Zambrana both doubled to help pace the Green and White. More information to come.

And this from earlier:

TEMPE, Ariz. - A message was served by Ohio softball on the second day of the Kajikawa Classic as the `Cats left the defending national champions and No. 1-ranked Washington Huskies licking their wounds after the Huskies managed to limp past Ohio late, 4-3.

First day:

TEMPE, Ariz. - With the start of the 2010 season finally arriving, Ohio softball showed strong potential both offensively and defensively on the first day of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Unfortunately for the `Cats, they came up just short in a pair of close-fought contests, falling 7-6 to Southern Utah and 2-0 to Portland State.

While it certainly was not the start Ohio (0-2) would have hoped for to open the season, the Green and White got its first taste of the competition level for a very challenging nonconference slate and some of its first tastes of action on a field this winter. The `Cats battled Southern Utah, head coach Jodi Hermanek's previous squad and a postseason qualifier twice in the last four years, and Portland State, an NCAA Regionals participant last season, right down to the very wire.

Official Tournament Scoreboard:

From Ohio U website:

What is the Kajikawa Classic?
The Kajikawa Classic is one of the biggest softball tournaments in the country each year and comprises more than 20 teams, including five of the top 15 teams in the 2010 preseason polls and nine squads that are receiving votes. Ranked teams in this year's field include Washington (No. 1), Arizona (No. 6), host Arizona State (No. 5), California (No. 12) and Northwestern (No. 15). The event takes place between two locations, the Tempe sports complex and ASU's Farrington Stadium.

On Tap for the `Cats
Ohio will play a total of five games over three days Thursday through Saturday. In addition to facing SUU, the `Cats will take on 2009 NCAA Regionals qualifierPortland State, Ole Miss, defending national champion Washington and another regionals participant, North Dakota State.

Hmmmm. I would guess 3-0 in this tournament for the Bison is probably better than OU's 0-5. Just my guess.
