One of the Jacks fans more familiar with the USF coach said he's more of an offensive coach. Is he really a good fit at DC or LB coach? I guess if you can coach you can coach.

Why would the Sioux Falls HC leave to become DC of NDSU? He has won, what, 3 or 4 National Championships proving his worth as a Head Coach and now he is going to become a DC? Makes zero sense.

IMO, he is on track to take over a Mid-level FCS as a Head Coach. BTW, he has never coached defense before.

Now if you are taking their DC from Sioux Falls, that would be pretty embarrassing considering the jokes you have made about NAIA this, NAIA that to UND fans. Or am I wrong?

Yeah, making fun of LOSING to an NAIA team(or was it 2? Oh wait, you came back in that game). Coaches move up all the time, don't really see the correlation between you guys not being able to compete, us laughing, and then hiring their coaches? I can see how that makes sense to a Sioux fan tho...atleast you guys have hockey...

they do?? looks like from the TV they have let that kinda slip thru also, LOTS of empty seats last nigh and at the WI series. Only 1 thats a huge ticket anymore if the gophers

anyway, yes their coaches coming to NDSU would be WAY different than the team with out a nickname losing to them

My guess would be somebody who has actually ran a defense before. For example, I wouldn't hire Brian Billick to be a DC just because he was really good coach--a really good Offensive Coach his entire career.

It just doesn't make sense to me in this situation because he has been an Offensive coach his whole career--AND--he has won multiple NC's as a Head Coach. We will see how it plays out.

Tell that to his SuperBowl team.

OK, take a deep breath and then go read what I wrote. He was the HEAD COACH for Baltimore....HEAD COACH. Not the Defensive Coordinator.

You are hiring Deboer to be the Defensive Coordinator, not the Head Coach. I repeat, you are hiring a Offensive mind to be your Defensive Coordinator. Completely opposite things.

This is the only reason why I question the move. He is a great coach, very smart. If you were hiring him to be your HC, I would understand.

Well USF has been doing something right with their D. I don't know who is responsible for setting up the schemes but it has worked.

2009 136 points given up in 14 games for a 9.71 average

2008 83 points given up in 14 games for a 5.93 average

2007 136 points given up in 14 games for a 9.71 average.

Those are some crazy stats at any level.

Who knows but if he had no part in it I really doubt Bohl is going to bring in someone with no defensive knowledge. He would like to be employed after next year and he isn't stupid. So if We do bring in the HC of USF I would bet he had a lot of say in the D. Whoever we bring in I hope it is a up and comer with a ton of fire.

Personally, I wished he would've be our Head Coach someday.

Not to pile on here (no football pun intended), but those jokes refer to the quality of the athlete you lost to... not the quality of an up and coming coach. As far as DeBoer's defensive experience... If he's hired to be the DC we'll find out. I'd say it'd be pretty hard to not improve from last year.

Experience point far from nullified. This is a bad analogy. Brian Billick was the Head Coach, not the defensive coordinator.
He didn't call he defensive plays, he didn't facilitate the defensive game plan, he wasn't even the GM that went out and drafted good players like Ray Lewis.

Deboer will be an "head asst coach" with alot of input on Offense and it'll be a 2 man operation on both sides of the ball. hell, it cant get any worse than last year, can it?

My guess is that Bohl will go with the current situation until the NCAA or AFCA meetings. He has done this many times in his 7 years and he never rushes the process.

I am sure the existing staff has solidified the current verbals and while the coaching staff is a consideration in the recruiting process, no question about that, HS kids are really picking a school, an academic program, and a team. In the latter case, the coaches are only a part of the team concept.

And although it is a small point, I think it should be made nonetheless. The two coaches to be replaced are on the defense. Only 8 of the current 18 verbals are on that side of the ball, and a couple of those were actually recruited by AJ Cooper. I really suspect that nothing will happen as far as hires until after signing day and Bohl's wedding.

One other point, there is a hiring freeze on at NDSU. I am sure these positions will be released, but technically the President has to sign off on them and the paperwork has to move through the system. That is never rapid at a university and will be slower than usual because of the freeze. Additionally, there are a few months of contract for the two coaches that have left and that may need to be paid out. Not sure of this last point, but it may be the case since all are given a 1 yr contract. This also could delay the hiring process.

Chuck Morrell is USF's defensive coordinator, Chuck was the defensive coordinator when Kalen was the OC, the way I understood is Chuck RUNS the defense, Kalen runs the offense..... Chuck's dad (Russ) has the most career wins of any high school coach in South Dakota, also coached SDSU legend Josh Ranek in high school......

He kept everything in front of him which is good for a safety, it just isn't what you want from a corner. But if you aren't as fast as the WR's what else do you do.

Hey, just because the guy wasn't all that fast, doesn't mean he can't coach. His dad was apparently a very good LB coach. I think he just wasn't a good head coach and apparently is not as good as a DC. A talent in one area sometimes causes a liability in another.

With Bobby... don't say a guy can't coach because he didn't run a 4.4.
(Of course, the reverse is also true....just because a guy is slow doesn't mean he can coach.)

:offtopic: Sorry, but every time I hear the name Bobby Babich two things come to mind. Number one is my only experience meeting him, when my friends and I destroyed the football team in tippy cup at the turf on band day, mainly because he flipped cups like he covered WR's. He continues to be ridiculed by many on this board to this day. I was personally offended that our student newspaper ran that article, I can only imagine how Bobby felt about it. I agree!

I am looking for a young stud, lots of passion and fire, with a strong desire to improve his coaching resume. I don't care if he is looking to "climb the ladder". A great young guy will probably stick around for a few years.

I do think that the attrition we see here is a sign of a program that has quality coaches.

I proposed Babich, out of thin air. I am not even sure if he is doing a good job at Eastern Ill. But his wife is from South Dakota and she played bball here for Amy, so they are both alums so he might be interested. The negative parts of the history might play a big part.

Here is one possibility:

Scott Hazelton has coached both LB's and DB's prior to coming to NDSU. Last year AJ Cooper changed to become the DE coach. Could Coopper take the DL and Hazelton move to LB or DB or even DC?

Anyone know either of these guys and their skill set? I think Cooper has been on offense all his career except for this past year. That is one big strike against him I would think.

Lets fire Bohl and get Gus back.

Wow, I wonder if Gus would comeback and be the DC?

Hmmmm. Going from DC in the NFL making solid bank (350,000 + ??) with the reputation as a great young up- and coming coach back to NDSU DC for around 90 grand.

Not so sure we are gonna see Gus on the sidelines anytime soon.

Once these boys are in the NFL, they ain't coming back. Unless they suck, in which case we don't want them anyway.

I would too. But that's not what I meant.

I don't think we have the budget to bring him back, even as HC. From all reports, he is building a good rep (at least prior to this season) and will command a pretty good salary. Wash too.

One in the NFL, we probably won't see those guys again, unless we go FBS.

I've heard Morrell retired....to go after other life interests....but certainly what's being rumored here is possible.

For those interested in his defensive approach....aggressive 3-4 defense. Had the best NAIA defense the last 3 years....last 2 years giving up 6 ppg and 10ppg.

Dominating with the 3-4 Defense: Pass Pressures

with Chuck Morrell,
University of Sioux Falls Defensive Coordinator,
2008 College Fanz Assistant Coach of the Year

Chuck Morrell is in charge of one of the most dominating defensive units in the country. In 2008 the Cougars allowed only 94.7 passing yards per game, were able to sack opposing quarterbacks 35 times and shut out their opponents in 7 out of 14 games. In this football DVD, Coach Morrell highlights the many advantages of running a 3-4 defense. Add a speed player to your defense, increase your coverage options, and add versatility to your pass rush! Morrell show you how to force offensive linemen to move their feet, which helps make the pocket uncomfortable for the quarterback. He explains four pass pressures and utilizes game tape to show each pressure in action. Coach Morrell also diagrams schemes to stop the bubble screen and quick screen. An excellent complement to Morrell's 3-4 Defense Run Pressures.

57 minutes. 2009.

To answer all of your questions. I do believe that you may be getting Chuck Morell. And in fact if you are, I can tell you he is probably one of the best defensive coordinators in Football at all college levels. I know this because I am in contact with several D1 coaches and they know Chuck and his philosophies and defense well. He has been pursued for a couple of years by some strong D1 programs but stayed at USF because he has been happy and wanted to get the National Championships and get the program to where it is today.

Being a USF Cougar fan I can't tell you guys how lucky you really are. I guess that you will find out. His defense is the 3-5 and USF is one of the best team at running the 3-5 because of Chuck. He is also a great recruiter and has brought some huge players into USF over the years. He is also as tough a coach as they come and can be as mean as a Badger but his players love him, respect him and love to play for him. Overall the guy is brilliant.

As a USF Coo fan I am bummed. But at the same time happy for him and can say congratulations to all of you. Your gonna love this guy!

I have no doubt he is a great young coach and that could be what we need. I did notice however he runs a lot of 3 man front and looked like 4 linebackers or maybe a 3-5 that was referenced earlier. Don't know, it looked like a 3-4 from what I could see. Anyways, we tried bringing in a coach who knew the 3-4 and stuck with our 4-3. Either we make a switch in defenses or find a 4-3 coach. I'd like the idea of bringing him in to coach linebackers but don't know about DC.

Morrell has been at USF for a long time now....and he used to run a 4-3 defense....and when he switched to a 3-4 approach (based on LB speed) USF then won 3 of the last 4 NAIA National Championships....and his defenses have been #1 at that level. His defenses in the 4-3 were good..but not #1 in the country kinda good. Certainly it's NAIA and not FCS..and I understand that....but his preparation (tireless, film) and the performance he's gotten from his guys....very much puts him in a spot to be a DC at an FCS school.

Since Chuck has left USF, I wish him the best....whether it's doing something else entirely..or possibly being the DC for NDSU. Heck, it would give me a sudden interest in the Bison..

The hiring freeze isnt really a hiring freeze, i mentioned it on another topic. Any position that previously existed is to be filled with no effect. Any new position being created "Must recieve permission" this permission is apparently extremely easy to get as my girlfriend works for bison connection and they have way overspent there budget, yet with a simple request they were able to create another fulltime position for a recent graduate.

The interm president is a monkey on strings, the hiring freeze is a political smokescreen and further justification for axing chapman parading a superficial deficit (Someone else said this, dont remeber who, but the current NDSU deficit is something like 105% of one days budget. Meaning if NDSU were to not operate and had no expenses (Say today, and didnt pay any employees either) They would almost be out of the hole).

Most of his experience is on the defensive side of the ball. He's coached the secondary and special teams. He graduated from high school in Arizona--an area that is getting increased recruiting emphasis from the Bison.

Whenever a new assistant coach is brought in I always assume that there is a correlation that the current staff wants to either strengthen or expand their recruiting possibilities with the new hire's area.

I would assume that Ward's connections in Arizona and Nebraska were appealing to Coach Bohl and NDSU.

Most of his experience is on the defensive side of the ball. He's coached the secondary and special teams. He graduated from high school in Arizona--an area that is getting increased recruiting emphasis from the Bison.

He is a graduate of the University of Phoenix?

No I read that. I understand.

I have never met anyone that actually has a degree there. At least that I know about.

Guess I am a snob.

I don't think I know anyone personally that has a degree from there either, but I do remember earing that Shaq got his MBA from there.

I think of the online universities, UoP is probably the best. It's certainly the largest, but I don't think its absolutely terrible.

I haven't read through this entire thread, but I think our WR coach from SIU is already on campus. I think he will really help with recruiting. There was alot of comments on SIU's board about how he was an important piece of their recruiting.

Some of you dip shits have to move on. I know you're entitled to your opinion, but try and get positive once in your life. I know most of you have been coaching college football all your lives and have all the answers, but some of us hav'nt. Just try and find something positive with what Coach Bohl is doing. I realize what's happened recently isn't where we want to be, but I don't think he's happy with the results either. Even it I'm an old fart, I'm not going away.

He was 9-2 last year as a head coach, he is going to be the secondary coach, sounds like a good hire to me.

He also has experience as a special teams coordinator and we all know how special teams play has been at NDSU lately.

Ward took a school to the playoffs that hasn't been in recent history..from a very bad NAIA conference (KCAC)..and his team actually competed in their playoff game against MNU, down 21-20 at half....eventually losing 40-24 to a much better MNU team at their place. Frankly, I was impressed that they were winning their game for much of the first half....being a watchful eye during the NAIA playoffs. I've heard good things from others about this guy..looks like a decent pickup for you guys.
