NDSU Wrestlers Claim Six Titles at the Dragon Open

December 5, 2009

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The North Dakota State wrestling team won six titles at the Dragon Open on Saturday, Dec. 5 in the final open competition of the season. In the red division, sophomore Justin Solberg, senior Ryan Adams, freshman Steven Monk, sophomore Tyler Johnson and sophomore Drew Ross won their respective weight classes. In the white division, freshman Brady Burgess won at 165 pounds. Overall, 17 Bison placed in the top six.

In the red division, Solberg captured the 125 pound title. He won an 11-5 decision over Mankato's Matthew Nyvold (unattached) and then defeated Augustana's Al Meger with a 3-0 decision in the semifinal. He won the final after fellow Bison Trent Sprenkle medically forfeit.

At 141 pounds, Adams opened with a pin of Concordia's Joe Neacox before winning a 15-3 major decision over Augsburg's Cody Hansen. He defeated Jay Sherer of Augustana (unattached) in the final, 11-6.

At 149 pounds, Monk competed unattached and won a 5-4 decision over Minnesota State Moorhead's Derek Bomstad to kick things off. Monk then defeated Lucas Murray of Augsburg in a 13-6 decision. In the semifinals, Monk won an 8-0 major decision over Augustana's Nate Herda. In the championship bout, he defeated Danny Zilverberg of Minnesota (unattached), 10-4.

Johnson won his third tournament of the year at 165 pounds. He pinned Augsburg's Jake Grygelko before defeating Lane Lunde of Concordia in the semifinal, 6-3. Johnson won a 12-5 decision over Alec Ortiz of Minnesota (unattached) in the final.

At 197 pounds, Ross opened with a pin of MSUM's Jon Swart. In the semifinal, he won a 13-1 major decision over Minnesota's Jake Filkins (unattached). He won his second straight bout by major decision in the final, defeating teammate Will Johnson, 8-0.

In the white division, Burgess won his first two bouts at 165 pounds by fall over Sioux Falls' Travis Godbersen and MSUM's Brennan Novacek, respectively. In the final, he defeated Tyler Reibsamen of Sioux Falls in a 10-6 decision.

The Bison will open dual action on Sunday, Dec. 13 when they host the Dakota Duals. NDSU will wrestle against Northern Illinois, Oregon State and Minnesota State Moorhead. Action begins at 1 p.m. at the Bison Sports Arena.

Bucky said on Thursday that most of these matched will not count toward season total as they would not be against D1 competition. Each wrestler needs 16 matches against D1 competition to even be considered for regional competition.

They are redshirting 2 freshman that wrestled last year, not because they are no good, but to make the future of NDSU better. 1st time reshirting wrestlers that were active 1 year already. I personally think that this might be the last year for the great one!!
