I hope this is accurate.

There are 33 at large bids at stake. Most conferences are finishing up the tourney's today. I haven't broken it down as to what teams need to lose and what teams need to win in order to increase NDSU's chances, small as they may be. Here is a list of teams that have won the auto:

America East: Binghamton (RPI 192)
Atlantic 10: Dayton (30)
ACC: Florida State (3)
Atlantic Sun: Lipscomb (39)

anybody know if we have a decent shot at getting an at-large bid?

I know exactly jack about how the system would work, but looking at it logically, with our RPI of ~50 or so (which should hopefully be upped by losing to the Summit League champion IPFW? :banghead: ), we would want as many higher-RPI-rated teams as possible to get in with autobids so that the at-larges are plentiful enough to make it to our rank, thus giving us a spot in the tourney.

I would think that with the trend started of higher-RPI'd teams winning conference autobids, our chances get better each time that happens. Unless anyone knows otherwise with certainty?

Problem with NDSU is, is that the Summit is so weak, plus NDSU lacks quality wins. The Big 10, Big 12, PAC, etc are going to take a BUNCH of at large bids.

The VB schedule really doesn't allow for much OOC games to be played, so it's really important to do well.

I would guess nearly impossible, but you know what Lloyd Christmas said...

Besides, I needed to get the F out of the football section for a while as I am still PO'd over that ending.

Very long shot that we get in.

I know NDSU is in the top 50 RPI but is there going to new rankings after the tournaments are over? IPFW is 125 RPI and we were what 42 or something... we have to drop down a ton. I see currently NDSU is higher than BYU and the U. 2 teams they barely lost to in the regular season.

I like to think of it this way IPFW odds of winning Summit are just about equal to our odds of making the dance as an At Large... but hey... it happened for IPFW so u never know......

A few years back, Eastern Washington University was 29-2 and had a win or two over a couple of pac 10 teams. One of the two losses was the Big Sky conference tournament final. EWU was not awarded an NCAA bid.

Right now I think there are 80 teams that have either qualified or have a shot....

NDSU has a higher RPI than 22 of those team going for an at-large(80-22=58)...So right now NDSU would be in based purely on RPI. RPI is just one factor though.

Things to cheer for...

Hawaii to win the WAC(closest team to Hawaii is in the upper 70s)
Delaware to win the CAA...that could knock two teams off the bubble.
San Deigo State to beat UC Santa Barbara. UCSB is right behind NDSU, any loss helps.
Northern Colorado to win the Big Sky, we beat them and the Big Sky is a one bid league this year. May as well have the team we beat win it.
Missouri State to lose in the MVC tournament, the earlier the better.

Since some conferences don't have tournaments RPI could still fluctuate a bit(some conferences are still playing conference games), but less tournaments could also likely mean less teams stealing bids.

I think NDSU has a better chance than I had once thought, staying at 45 after losing to IPFW really shows the strength of our schedule and team so far this year.

RPI importance isn't used in volleyball anywhere close to how it is used in basketball, in fact more people use the PABLO rankings as a NCAA indictator in volleyball.

So....how does that work? :)

Fantastic year for our ladies!!!! But unless lots of strange things happen, nobody needs to pack their bags for a regional trip.

We need to find some wins against teams outside of our conference. Big Ten, Big 12, WAC, whoever. We have no "quality wins" and that will be a crucial determining factor.

six teams made it with an rpi lower than NDSU's

http://www.ncaa.com/blog/2009d1wvb/2009/11/complete-bracket-breakdown.html

Michigan State finished with a 5-15 conference record, 17-15 overall and still got in... probably because the play in the big ten, but still 5-15?

1 quality win and we easily get in over them. There were quite a few quality games to where the ladies had a shot, just came up short. Unfortunately that's all it takes at this point in the season.

Check out the schedule of Mich. state..... they played 14 matches against teams in the top 25........ Until we are in a different conference, we will not be able to schedule ourselves enough quality matches against top 25 opponents and so the ONLY way we will get into playoffs is if we win the conference tournament.

Am most disappointed the Bison lady volleyballers were not invited to the NCAA tournament considering the outstanding season they had. Still, it was quite a ride. Congratulations on a simply superb season.
