There was something different in the Bison team last week. This was the first game that I saw where the NDSU defense executed adjustments to shut down the opposition in the second half. Part of the problem was fatigue. The offense was scoring so fast that the defense was on the field most of the first half. They were getting tired and it showed. I think these young kids are finally starting to play together expecting to win games. If not for a fumble on the 1 against Missouri St, NDSU would be 3-0 with Mohler as it's QB. Wide receivers are producing more after the catch due to more accurate passes from Mohler.
How does this relate to the Youngstown game? I would say that for Youngstown to win, they need to pass the ball. Summers has 2070 yards passing but 14 TDs and 14 INTs. They have three guys who get the lions share of the receptions while NDSU is more by commitee. I would say that it is unfortunate that Jose made the choices that he did last year. If he would have participated in spring ball, his progress may have facilitated a QB change much sooner. Unfortunately, we don't know how good Mohler is yet. He had a good game last week. How much effect the bruise had to his arm in the W Ill game is up for debate. It is interresting that Bohl considered that a bruised Mohler arm was better than a healthy Mertens.
NDSU has the better running game. Both defenses are average with the adavantage going to Youngstown. NDSU has a better offensive line. They have been solid up front all year. The achilles heel the first seven games has been the lack of an accurate passer. Hopefully this has been corrected.
I would say that NDSU should ashamed of their 3-7 record this year. The Indiana St coach was spot on when he stated that he couldn't understand why NDSU has such a poor record. Injuries were a part of it, but there was something else mixed in. There seamed to be an expectation that something was going to happen to prevent a win. We all know the if's and but's of this season; it started in spring ball when some decisions by players hurt the progress of this team.
Finally, the prediction. If Youngstown were playing NDSU 5 weeks ago, I would say that Youngstown would win. This isn't the case. I think that Mohler will have a solid game going 16/21 and that will be enough to win this game. I say Bison by 10
