it looks like we are stuck with the current crap until 2015 or 2016. What a joke!! That crap will be 13-14 years old by then. Hell people replace their home carpet sooner than that. In addition it sounds like we will get a newer version of astroturf next time it the same guy is in charge. I really don't care about turn around time. Get us a surface the players are going to feel safe playing on.

$2 Million is big money. It is tough for a city owned facility to spend that kind of money in todays economy. While I agree it is needed, I will not hold my breath waiting for it

The turf isn't any less safe. These guys wear pads. I've read Astroturf is actually safer because the surface is smoother and more even, unlike grass that gets torn up with holes and is slippery. It's just a lame excuse for losing. Besides, one could argue we sucked just as bad with our starters we lost to injury. The problem is our good playes either got kicked off the team or were doing stupid crap and we didn't have enough depth due to poor recruiting.

I'm sure it's a money deal. According to another post they are doing the lights next year at a pretty high cost. The turf is still in good shape but the lights are a bigger problem..

I agree we need new turf but it's not the end of the world if we have to wait. It's the same style turf they had in the UNI dome for 25 years. It's the same stuff they had on the old Dacotah Field and it didn't stop us back then. It's the same turf we played on from 06-07 when we went almost 2 years without a home loss.

We've got 3 styles to practice on now... Field Turf, natural grass, and Astro Turf.

I hope when we get the new turf they can get rid of that darn dome logo. It's lame.

Me neither, cant they at least re-paint the bison logos, stripes etc. ? I really dont know that answear, I do know it looks like crap on tv and the lighting gives the appearance of playing on a totally clouded over day.

Just don't understand how NDSU gets screwed over waiting for things to get done by the city. The city got the land for nothing and the Fargodome has five or six major events guaranteed there every year with the NDSU football games.
How about teammakers take up a special collection to get new turf installed. Get donor names on a plaque mounted in the dome. Also, then NDSU can decide on timing of purchase and what is painted / stitched on it.
Lets get this done!

I think that you are on to something. The only way we get the turf the way we want it is to pay for it. It may take three years, but that is the way to go...

I have no inside knowledge on this but I'd be very surprised if the turf isn't replaced before the dates in The Forum article. NDSU needs this if for nothing else than to keep up with the other teams in the conference, even Indiana State has this turf. I'm pretty sure the technology is already in place so the new turf can be put down in one roll like it now rather than in sections. I believe Northern Arizona and the AlamoDome have something like this in place now (well maybe not, see edit below....) It's time for the people at the dome and NDSU sit down and work something out and get this done.

edit: I'm getting old and my memory must be slipping a bit, I did a little looking around and I am wrong about UNA and the AlamoDome. UNA uses something called REALGRASS and the product they use doesn't come in one secton. AlamoDome web site says their turf is put together in 18 different sections.

I will say this, NDSU needs to go to the Dome and tell them that they are crazy if they think they are just going to replace this turf with the same crap. I don't care when it is replaced, I don't care how long it takes to remove, I want the best surface possible in the dome.

Fortunately they probably won't be selling magic carpet in 2015 because nobody buys it anymore. That is probably why it costs $2 million now while field turf costs about $1 million(UNI's was $800k).

Yeah, the number for new turf is really $800k.... http://www.unipanthers.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/071509aaa.html

OK, did a little digging on the REALGRASS web site and both the AlamoDome and UNA use the same system, it's called REALGRASS Soft Top Removable System, linky here: http://www.sportfield.com/softop.php
According to the UNA web site the turf cost around $1 million. It's all coming back to me now.......:D

That stuff looks great but the dome is looking for something that comes out in one long roll rather than small chunks like the one in the link. If it comes in one roll, it costs less money to take out and put in because less people+less time=less money. They said that they used to have turf that came in several rolls and it took them 5-6 hours to put in the turf before a game.

Not only does it run $800K but UNI got a large $500K grant from an Indian gaming association so they only had to raise $300K to get the new turf. ND is full of casino's to hit up for some money.

Too bad it takes 5-6 hours. There are only 5 or 6 NDSU games per year. With close to 19,000 at most every game the dome makes plenty of money back in concessions and a percentage on the ticket sales due to NDSU football. Give me a break. As for high school games just raise the rental fee accordingly. 5 more hours work for 6 guys times $20 / hour (includes benefits) equals $600. Wow, that will break the bank. Maybe one time in 5 years it will screw scheduling a morning or evening activity because they can't pull the carpet off or put it on soon enough.

I wonder if the Magic Carpet II system uses AstroTurf's PureGrass product(insert pot joke here). Remember, Magic Carpet is not the name of the turf, it's the name of the system used to lay it down and pull it up. In the case of our current installation, I believe the turf is actually AstroTurf 7, which is no longer in production. Whatever turf MCII uses, it must be a different product. According to AstroTurf's website(no mention of MCII), PureGrass is similar to infill turf, but doesn't require the rubber infill in all applications. That would seem to be perfect for the Fargodome. You get almost all the benefits of infill without the huge weight and mess. It would be interesting to find places that have used the permanent installation of PureGrass to see how it performs.

And I figure 2015 or 2016 is worst case. More likely it will be 2013 or 2014.

PureGrass:

Every coach dreams of a player with an exceptional all-around game. That's the best way to think of AstroTurf PureGrass. A premium, multi-purpose, extra plush turf with a high fiber density and a thick Root ZoneŽ that performs like a pro - outdoors and indoors. No Fill Required (NFR) technology reduces the amount of infill required, and in some cases, eliminates it altogether.

Designed for both portable and permanent use either indoors or outdoors, PureGrass looks and plays like natural grass. Providing maximum shock absorbency, PureGrass is compatible with a number of shock pads and base options. Base construction can be concrete, crushed stone, E-LayerŽ or asphalt.

Whatever game plan you run with, PureGrass will be ready.

I'd say you are right Hammersmith...

From NMU's website...

AstroTurf replaced the old turf in the Superior Dome with a PureGrass 3D surface. It’s a premium multi-purpose extra plush turf with a high fiber density. The new turf’s height is an inch high which is similar to a blade of grass.

http://webb.nmu.edu/Sports/SiteSections/PressBox/PressBox.shtml?articleID=108127&team=&display=&category=&IsNewsBureau=

If this is right, then I approve and the dome should put it in ASAP.

Some systems can only be used with certain products. The infill turfs have to use the Transition Turf system(5 yd strips), and the MC system can only be used by carpet-style turfs.

Infill: Transition Turf only
Carpet: Transition Turf or Magic Carpet

PureGrass seems like an attempt to bridge the gap. I don't know how long it's been on the market, so I don't know if there's a large installation base or just the NMU facility(talking about both removable and permanent installations here).

The Forum article lists 8 ACL tears in 2002, 5 at home, does anybody know when those happened? During marching band practice I tore my ACL on Sept 27, morning of the 2nd home game. Was I the first major injury on that turf?

For those that laugh at band injuries, you should know that we also had a broken wrist that year, and a broken foot the next. I also guarantee I've been on the Dome's field in more games than any player, and I've played more minutes than a good chunk of them.

This is what I don't like about the Bison playing in a city facility. The university doesn't have the freedom to make changes. Too many cooks in the kitchen...all, with different agendas. The Bison deserve a football-only facility that is the property of North Dakota State University. This turf issue is a big thing. But it's also the tip of the iceberg.
