what I was asking, if we win out before the conf tourney will our ranking be high enough to make it without winning the conf toruney?

If I understand correctly volleyball post season is no different than basketball, so if NDSU wins out and has below 40 RPI. There is a good shot at an at large bid, but it depends how other schools tournaments come out. Cause if unexpected champions happen that will take up spots, but lets just be safe and win the Summit. Better than putting it in the hands of the tournament committee.

If NDSU didn't win the Summit tourny they would become like Creighton was in men's basketball. They didn't win the Missouri Valley tournament, but had a good RPI but still didnt make the big dance cause Cleveland St. won the Horizon and not Butler that took away a slot from Creighton.

It is a lot like basketball and in many ways the volleyball team is a lot like the basketball team last year in that RPI is mainly about seeding if they make the tournament.

With no marquee wins the team will need to win the Summit Tournament but if they keep winning they'll get a good enough seed so that they can avoid having to play one of the top teams in the nation their first game.

I think our RPI rating was in 80s or 90s going into the NCAA tournament last year.

I wonder how many schools that transitioned to D-1 envisioned having the possibility of an at large bid in any sport their 2nd year of eligibility?

Hinterstocker was on the WDAY sports talk show today and he was pleased to be in the top 50 in the RPI. He also said that although we are on a winning streak, we need to get better if we hope to knock off someone in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

SDSU women's bball would have had an autobid last year if they lost the conference title but YES great work by the volleyball program especially one that hardly mattered at NDSU until last year

I think NDSU needs to win the league tournament, the team just doesn't have any marquee wins. I know for basketball they will punish a mid-major that has a good RPI if they don't play a good enough schedule or have any top 50 wins.

Elephants Dream?
10-24-2009, 06:39 PM
If the Bison were to lose during the conference tourney,
I think it is unlikely (not impossible, but unlikely) that NDSU
would get an autobid even if they have a high RPI.

No top 50 wins = no at-large

Bison needed to beat Florida State or Miami if they wanted an at-large, or a chance to be seeded higher and avoid playing a heavyweight in the first round of the NCAA tourney

I think this article sheds some light on the chances of receiving an at-large bid.

Note that the past couple of seasons, the MVC has had 3 teams in the top 50. Lots of chances to get a top 50 win. This year the Summit has one team in the top 50--the Bison. Other Summit teams have a chance at beating a top 50 team, but the Bison haven't in league play.

"Northern Iowa is No. 41 and Missouri State No. 43. Creighton is No. 108. Three MVC teams rank in the top 50 and four (SIU is No. 87) are in the top 100. Eight of the 10 MVC schools are in the top 150."

http://blogs.kansas.com/shockwaves/2009/10/12/ncaa-volleyball-rpi-out/

Also note: 8 of the 10 MVC schools are in the top 150. In the Summit League there are just two--NDSU and Oakland at 129, though two more--IUPUI and ORU are just outside that bracket at 151 and 154.

Would life be tougher if the Bison were in the MVC? No doubt.

What for? The summit is a free pass to the tournament every year? Make the tourney every year for 20 years and you will recruit just like montana does in football... :P

Stay in the summit and pick on the teams in it. More tourneys sees more money.

agreed agreed I don't see the need either. What we have here is good competition and an easier pass to the big tourny.

And in addition our RPI is nearly high enough to get an at-large bid as-is. Let recruiting build up enough for a few years at least before we start talking about a conference change.

What RPIs generally get at-larges? Are we close?

NDSUstudent
10-28-2009, 01:49 AM
I don't think we are close because getting an at-large would mean a loss and that loss would be costly considering no team in the league is above 100 in RPI.

We also have no top 50 wins. That said if we run the table our RPI just might be good enough to allow for the Bison to play on a neutral court for their first game.

Remember, there's a certain DI conference headquartered in St. Louis that I think NDSU would get invited to if we just take care of the damn basketball arena thing...

(Missouri Valley)

(Most Summit schools half-ass their athletic programs - UMKC, IUPUI, SUU and WIU, I'm looking in your direction)

All the new tax money from the record oil production in the state should be spent on a new arena! I personally dont know if I would like NDSU moving the Valley. We just got into the Summit League what 2 years ago?.... NDSU is just fine in the Summit League there is no rush ..... I love the Summit League look at it this way, your odds are better of making the big dance in any sport each year in the Summit than in the Valley. The Valley has better athletic programs no doubt, and it would be way harder for NDSU to make dances, also you can just look at the fact that if NDSU joined the Valley there would be 11 teams competing for one auto bid rather than only 10 teams in the Summit. Summit .001% of getting an auto bid(in any sport but maybe women's bball SDSU), Valley doesn't get many auto bids either ... Crieghton last year got screwed in basketball. Just my 2 cents :D

NDSUstudent

I like the Summit but if the MVC offers we should leave in a second. Being in the MVC means better home games, more media exposure, easier to recruit, and our teams should have a chance to go farther in postseason. The MVC is the ideal conference for NDSU.

Whatever happened to a certain NDSU Athletics motto called "Bring On The Competition"?? Doesn't it go against Bison Athletics philosophy to stay in a conference with half the schools being weaker programs who don't provide much competition for NDSU?? (Oh wait, I forgot about the NCC, nevermind)
