View Full Version : Ideas for student/band cheers?

So anyone who's been to a big school football or basketball game will know that the student section and band are tight as hell - this is something we need to get started at NDSU!

Sav already had the idea of alternating GREEN and GOLD between band/fans, anyone else have any ideas they've seen or made up?

one group chants: "ND"... other "SU"

sav and i always have plenty of good chants during games but we cant always get enough people to partake in them

The one we do at volleyball games is

ND! (bump)
S! (set))
(spike) UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!

It's legit, but I definitely like those ideas. Something to tie everyone together, really get a unified stance going and get other fans into it.

Still the greatest basketball "chant"

I am all for ND....SU going side to side in the BSA though, or section to section in the Dome.

Yes, the whole dome should sing the Fireman song.

I think that involving the whole crowd in cheers will be much easier at basketball games than at the dome. Years ago the cheer team would do a "GO" on the east side, then "BISON" on the west side. The best time to do this is when the visiting team calls a time out.

Back in the day we would chant "Here We Go Bison Here We Go. Give em the horn! (to be used in place of Sioux suck)

Whatever happened to the "Who is he? He sucks chants at basketball games? My dad was like those were loud! But maybe he was just exaggerating like usual.

Oh yeh, I had forgotten about that. We used to do it during the starting line up for the other team and their coaches.

I love the cheer team and danceline, but I think that the cheers that we as a student section do would be greatly heightened if the band played along as well. Its often hard to hear the cheer team and danceline start a cheer but if they backed up the band on our cheers then things might catch on.

Take the cadence "Street" for example. There were a couple cheerleaders who saw the band doing the dance for it and started doing it themselves. Soon after a couple of students caught on. Sure its small now, but hopefully next year it will really catch on.

The band already has several cheers in place.

"Say he's just a friend"
Cheers during the song "The Horse"
Pretty Fly's "Give it to me baby"
The Hey Song where we spell out N-D-S-U

I think maybe it would be more effective if the entire band always did them rather than the low brass carrying the burden....

I think students are missing the point of football games. Its not about winning (although it is nice when we do) but its more about the comradery. Showing up, cheering for the team, enjoying the environment we all make. I think this article says it best.

Nice article Ming!

One thing I'm looking at and talking with the drum majors and director (Sigurd) about is having a "rotation" of band members (since we generally have 50+) to swing over and grab spots in the student section during pre-game and for 10-15 minute spots during the game itself. Whenever the band starts a cheer or plays a song we know a cheer is happening in, it'd help to have a few band-guys start the spark and get something going early. I'll let you guys know what we decide, particularly during basketball season.

the band gets me just jacked everytime never fails that fool who runs it seems pretty sweet might have to ask him if he has any room or need for a bass violin id love to join in lol anyways some suggestions from the c hoops 2k chants would be when the bison have the ball have half the secion say "shoot for 2" then the other half responds with "or three" llol hahaha I always loved that one or my all time favorite and if you fools could pull this off id send it in to espn they'd prolly put you on sportscenter if one band girl yells "PUT IT IN THE HOOOOOOOP" then some drummage followed by the entire secition repeating "put it in the hoop"...I dunno ill try to get sav to post those chants on youtube but they would be classic

hahahahaha

When are we going to fill that student section and be able to get the north and south ends of the court right behind each hoop and get those ends and the west side to stand and yell man this is a D2 school and they're LOUD!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gPeqKeMIjk&NR=1

I wish we could do this! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I guess we need to bring KSU back or some team like that to accomplish this.

a DII team can accomplish that and we couldn't even get more than a handful to yell or cheer when we had Woodside and Co. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Another cool one I heard at our game last night that the band did was if the guy had 2 freethrows and missed the first one they chanted, "That was bad!" If he missed the second one they chanted "That was worse!" Also the "Drive home safely" chant is always a good one.

Wouldn't one need to be sitting in the stands near the end of the game in order to do this cheer? :D

I love the ref cheer!

OK the "Drive Home Safely" chant is done when the game is a blowout i.e. the other team should drive home. If you wiggle your keys at them that's always good too.

I got more ref chants too:
1 bad call: Hey ref! If you had one more eye, you'd be a cyclops.
2 bad calls: Hey ref! If you had one more sense, you'd be Helen Keller. (my blind friend laughed so hard she snorted when I said that so it's cool :D)
And finally
3+ bad calls: Hey ref! Get a pregnancy test because you missed this period! :hide: :hide:
Or the "We want a ref" chant is always good. As demonstrated towards the very end of this video (like 1:30 mark) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HQR1fogtHg

"Shake your head ref your eyes are stuck!" I pulled that out at the NDSU-Idaho game
