I agree, if Mertens and the rest of the team play like last year a 38-10 blow out by ISU is likely.
If this team plays with some pride. If the coaches put together a decent offensive game plan and run the stuff that works. And if 4 or 5 new guys step up an play like veterans I could see the score being NDSU 31, ISU 24.

By all indications, ISU is bad and this is a game we would win in most normal years. I feel even with one or two positions in flux, we should still hang in there.

I'm going to say 24-17 ISU. If we lose by a lot more then 7 to 10 points, then we have big problems.

I hope the Bison pull this off, partially for conference pride and partially because I hate ISU.

However, I have to pick ISU by a score of 35-17. I understand about the win over Minnesota, but I think almost all NDSU posts are forgetting about one of the biggest components of any college football game, and that is the psychological aspect. I think that the NDSU had an enormous psychological advantage going into the Minnesota game, I don't see that here. Also, I get a feeling here that since NDSU won that game and a few others that the Big 12 thing is not that big of a deal. I disagree; I think that the athleticism of all the teams in the conference is such that an FCS team has to be really good and really ready in order to overcome it. NDSU was a few times in the past, but do they really have that level of skill and mental toughness this year? If so, then my prediction above is wrong. But with 8 returning starters and a QB with something to prove, that is an awfully tall order for any FCS team.

Now prove me wrong and humiliate the hated Cyclones.

Thanks for the kind words and I hope we do the MVC proud! The team has played in front of huge crowds before so it's nothing new. This is an experienced team and mentally we've always been confident going up against FBS competition. We will play the game to win.

ISU is a good matchup with us given the fact that they have an undersized defense going up against a power running game. We should be able to move the ball and control the clock. We just don't want to fall behind and get into a shootout because that's not our strength. They will be able to move the ball but we've seen the spread before and we had the top pass defense in the MVC. This will be their first game in a brand new system so the chances of mistakes and turnovers goes up.

Plus they play Iowa the week after so I could see them looking ahead. On paper we're not as formidible as past teams but that's just another reason for them to be suprised.

The only problem is-------the team that beat MN isnt playing Thursday night. Im not worried about them being intimidated because they wont be. Im more worried that there may be a disadvantage talent wise. Depth is also a disadvantage.

I've never gotten the Bibeau hate, the guy isn't amazing, but if you look at pure stats he is the best kicker we have ever had.

He completely outclasses Vartanian, and oddly nobody ever ripped Vart here outside of the night he got liquored up and walked into the wrong house.

Who knows what Mertens will bring, he doesn't stink, but we need much more than average season he had last year.

I think a lot of the Bibeau haterade is from the untimeliness of the misses, i.e. the SDSU misses...

He's been consistent on FG%, though, like you've said

'08 15-22

Either way, room for improvement in '09!

He is a very strange kicker, one game he'll be 3/3 and the next 0/2 missing a few 30 yarders. He does have a big leg, if he ever gets comfortable out there he could have a break out year.

Hopefully he can finally hit a clutch kick.

I wouldn't be surprised, Obaraski doesn't have much of leg, unless he kicks the under 40 yarders while Bibeau handles the 40+ and kickoffs.

Pretty hard to predict results from a team you haven't seen take the field yet. I can't make predictions based on hope or faith. I can only go by what I saw and last season is too fresh in my mind.

35-3 Cyclones.

I give us 1% chance of pulling out a win, 10% chance of keeping it within 2 TD's, 50% chance of not getting embarrassed, 10% chance of getting blown out. (I know it doesn't add to 100% because I left out some other categories.)

35-3 is on the edge of getting embarrassed. I hope for better but I need to see improvement on the field to erase the memories of 2008.

Judas Priest, Northern. If you really believe your prediction, how in the hell did you even find the will to get up this morning?

It's simple.

1. I'm usually wrong on predictions about sporting events.
2. Even if my post is correct, we have a chance to win and at least 50% chance of not getting embarrassed.
3. Add #1 and #2 together and the chances of an embarrassing loss drop to zero.

Other than McTague from Canada (punter, mid-late 70's), I don't recall any kickers I would call "outstanding". He also played another position.

If I remember right, they never used a scholarship on kickers in the glory days, using walkons or linemen to kick. I always took it that they felt they were so good an extra point missed here or there didn't matter.

More often than not, I felt the other team's kickers were better than ours.

I still feel that way, but at least now we blow a scholarship on it!

NorthernBison
09-03-2009, 04:37 PM
I believe the first time we spent a scholarship on a player who was just a kicker was in the early 90's. The kid was Ludwig Milfors. Played his HS football in Detroit Lakes. Swedish foreign exchange student. Very strong leg but lacked accuracy.

Back in those days, it was questionable if we achieved 50% on PAT's.

My guess is that NDSU will lose, but not by the score that SDSU did. They have the big game experience that SDSU lacked last year and will probably be less nervous. We moved the ball well against them, but we didn't do a lot of stopping them either. I espect the same from this game.
