Another group of NDSU athletes heading to the NCAA tourneys.
All track season we saw the term Provisional Qualifier.

Does that mean they earned just the right to compete in this regional, and then must qualify for the finals?

Lets Go Bison!!

Indoor track still has provisional and automatic qualifiers. An athlete qualifies provisionally when they have reached that established mark. Their name goes on a list after those who qualified provisionally. What usually happens is that the NCAA determines how many athletes total that they want competing in the meet. There really is not science to it, but the more athletes that qualifiy automatically, the less that will qualify from the provisional list. Outdoor season is different becuase they have a regional meet. You must first qualify for regionals, then you qualify for nationals by place. This is controversial for the schools in the warmer climate because you may have a stud that either gets injured or has a bad day at regionals and they don't go to nationals.

I don't agree that its "controversial for the schools in warmer climates". it has to be controversial for "all schools" or there is no controversy. There is no special injuiries just for schools from southern climates. There is just injuries.

The southern schools liked the old way of being able to qualify automatically and not have to wait to qualify by place in the regionals. The reason for the regional is to give those in colder climates a fair opportunity to qualify. I am trying to find a link from an article I read last year.

So is that 3 women to nationals? And they are currently in 10th place. Awesome job, women! Not so long ago the Bison women were only getting 2 and 3 into DII nationals. It is great to see all of this progress at this high level of competition.

any idea why whitney carlson is not on the 4x4?- is she in too many other events?

I would think somebody that could run a 58 second 400 hurdles could run a pretty good open 400

She may still be running it. They can run whoever they want dispite what it says on the heat sheet. They would need her to run it if they want to have a shot at placing.

Wow, 6 athletes crossing the finish line within .87 of each other over a 400 meter distance is pretty dramatic. Especially a hurdle event where a lead change can happen in a heartbeat. Must have been pretty exciting!

Hermanson's win over Minnesota's Heather Dorniden gets a headline in the on-line Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

http://www.startribune.com/sports/gophers/46555477.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiUo8cyaiUiD3aPc:_Yyc:a UU

Dorniden was trying for her third-straight Regional win at 800 meters and the two were shoulder-to-shoulder for much of the second lap but Hermanson had a little more strength in the final 100 meters.

Impressive showing by the Bison at their first Regional meet.

Anytime you can beat Dorniden is an impressive thing. This is a girl that ran 2:01 a couple of years ago. Heather and Laura most likely know each other since Heather went to Rosemount and Laura went to Burnsville. They are both considered newcomers to the event since Heather started running the 800 later in her career and Laura was known as a 400 runner. Look for these young ladies to continue to impact the 800 field in the United States.
