Mpls Tribune Story 5/19/09 "When Nicole Smart begins her college basketball career at the University of North Dakota next season, she will make history as the first NCAA Division I athlete from Ada-Borup." The point of the story was that it was rare for DI players to come from small-sized schools.

I pose as knowing very little about Women's basketball. My question -- I'm sure that NDSU knew about her but did we actually recruit her? Is this girl a DI quality player or was this a UND reach for someone local?

Probably because we already had 5 coming in next year. In one game incoming recruit, Hanna Linz hung 40 on Nicole. Nicole had 20. We will have 14 players next year. I think Carolyl is more comfortable with 12 or 13.

What years did the Rubke's play VB for the Bison? They are from Ada-Borup... Did they play for the Bison when we started out as D1?

Janna played in 1997 & 1998. Becky played in 2002 & 2003. There were also the Hegg girls from up in that area. Nikki 1989, Teresa 1991 and Kathleen 2001

The Hegg girls were from Win-E-Mac (Winger, Erskine and McIntosh) I believe.

Nicole Smart is the first person to sign a DI scholarship from Ada-Borup - that's pretty cool (and also means that, yeah, she's definitely a DI recruit). No idea whether she was recruited by UND - then again, SDSU is the team our Bison need to measure up against, not UND.

I got to watch Nicole Smart play both bolleyball and basketball a few times. Their state tourney/title runs the last couple years are unbelievable. She is a very good athlete.
