My thoughts and prayers are with all of you back in Lake Agassiz.

The only time I ever sandbagged was in the summer of 1993 (Or was it 1991) when we had all of that torrential rain. At least that was in the summer so we were out there in shorts.

Aftermath, still showing BISON pride. I tell you what, no one asked me what kind of MPG I get during all of this. I didn't see any Prius cars either, and I got many thanks for having a big gas guzzler. Survival, it pays to have a large truck on 37's.

Yes, it came back up thru the storm drains. The river was too high, so the snow melt flowed backwards into bismarck, instead of out.

It's No Dak, when people I have never met before helped me sand bag, and some huge truck hauled people's cars out. No clue who he was. We just come together and take care of each other, no questions asked.

As of right now we are fine. Double Ditch ice jam still is leaking, and Garrison is at 9,000, which will take 48 hours to reach Bismarck. I left the majority of my sand bags up, but from what I hear we are doing just fine, no threats.

Those pics are unbelievable with water squirting right through the seams. Has to make Grand Forks a little weary since so much of their protection is based upon those types of walls. I hope they got theirs from a better company!!

roadwarrior

If you compare the flood wall at Oak Grove with the flood wall at the VA hospital in Fargo, it's obvious that the engineering wasn't done by the same people. (although the VA flood wall is much higher)

Those leaks weren't the problem. Something happened along the base of those walls, and they probably won't know exactly what until the flood waters recede. Most likely, the fast current eroded the soil along the base of the wall. That reduced the structural strength of the metal panels and allowed the base of the panels to buckle. That caused further erosion and allowed the water to flow underneath, under pressure, which meant that sandbagging the breach from the inside was impossible. If the wall's foundation hadn't been compromised, the leakage in the picture could have been dealt with easily.

The soil around this area is so terrible for any structural stability. I read an article once where a civil engineer from New Orleans said the soil around here is some of the worst for building anything. He said he wouldn't allow anyone to build basements around here. Any building of any substantial height must be dug down to bedrock, which is about 100 feet down. It's all just a game of educated guesses as far as how things are going to act I guess.

D.P. Schwert has also been saying that for years. He also is has a quote on the NDSU flood website about how the oakport development should not have been developed and is subject to severe flooding. Goofy guy but he knows his stuff. I also remember him saying in class that anyone living in the Pacific northwest is an idiot and will die* due to a major volcanic event that will take place in the very near future.

*not exact words but he was pretty adamant about drilling that point home.

This is a satellite image taken on April 3rd 09. This is from my company's website satshot.com Look at all the water North of Fargo.

http://www.bisonville.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=334&stc=1&d=1239112586

We also had High resolution Aerial Imagery taken on the 29th during the crest.
you can view it at rrflood.satshot.com

There is a lot of images on the website so it may take a little while to find the right ones in the area you are looking for. Check back later for a mosaic of all the images. That should make it easier to view. Enjoy!
