I just want to bring to all of you hockey loving folk an update on Bison Club Hockey:

The Men's team had a final record of 12-16-1. The highlight of the seasons of the season were an 8-3 win over St. Cloud at home and a 7-2 pounding of the Minnesota Flying Aces (MJHL) in Little Falls. The team was given about $10,000 in funding and had a player's fee of $600. Next year looks even better. 30 games are already scheduled and a player from Canada is all set to come in and several kids out of juniors are interested. The school is looking to give up to $26,000 for next season and a player's fee would be about $400 for the year. This includes all ice, travel, and lodging, as well as a warm up jacket. The only thing left for the players to pay is their food on road trips. The team has put together a very competitive schedule and they play their home games at the Coliseum. The American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) is the league they play in and several teams in the league beat D3 teams on a yearly basis. NDSU is a M1 (D1) club team.

The Women's team had a final record of 14-7-0 and fell one win shy of the national tournament. They had a player's fee of $375 and were given about $8,000 from the school. They will be receiving up to $22,000 from the school next year and will play about 30 games. Their player's fee will be very similar to the men's. The highlight of the women's season was beating every team they played except St. Scholastica and Rainy River. Those are the two teams representing the west at the national tournament. All of the games were very close losses. Some of the scores were 2-0, 2-0, 1-0, 2-1 (OT), etc. The women also play their home games at the Coliseum. They also play in the ACHA. They are a W-2 (D2) club team. Teams in their league compete with D3 teams such as St. Kate's and Concordia on a yearly basis.

Both teams have a locker room to their name at the Coliseum and they play from September to the end of February to early March. If you haven't checked out a game, you should really think about it. They are very entertaining and the talent level is pretty good up and down.

Both teams will practice twice per week for an hour and a half per day next year. Both teams have also created some great rivalries. The men's team has bitter rivals in South Dakota State and Minot State and and a more friendly rivalry with St. Cloud State. The women have great rivalries with St. Scholastica and Minot State.

Thanks for posting this. I've got a plan for you. See if you can find an open weekend night at the Urban Plains Center next year and make it Bison Hockey Night. Put Lakes in charge of filling up the place and split the proceeds with Big Brothers/Big Sisters. Can you imagine what that would do for the Club hockey team? If it can't be done at the UPC then the other venue will work. I am serious about this, keep posting here and lets make a Bison Hockey Night happen...

So, NDSU club hockey has a game with the WCHA Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks???? If that is really the case that would be quite interesting -- a test to see how far behind our club ACTUALLY is....

bisonballs33
03-10-2009, 07:23 PM
No, no. Minnesota State-Mankato is just like St. Cloud State. They have a club team as well as the varsity. Mankato has a very good team year in and year out in the ACHA. They had three kids from the USHL this year and they were very good.

It would have to be a sensible fit. I would imagine financially, that it wouldn't be too strapping to play at the UP Center. But, I am not sure if the UP Center would actually be a better draw or not. The fans should tell!

That is a great idea. I can pass that on to the higher ups. The men and women each host NDSU at the Coliseum on Nov. 13. Women before the men. Those are always fun games.

Yes it will. Oklahoma and teams like them are just on a whole new level financially and staff-wise. It is always a good team building weekend and there is no doubt the team will improve in talent. The scores really aren't the important part, it is growing as a club. Great time of year to go down there too.

No shootout?

The NDSU Men's team plays in the ACHA M-1, so shootouts commence in league games. SDSU Men play at a lower level (based on school size, years of a program, etc.) and in the interlevel matchups, shootouts typically don't commence.

Interesting note: SDSU is ranked 6th in their region right now. Has to be one of their highest rankings ever.

They were a NCAA DIII team until this year, so they still have a majority of those players. Crookston won game two on Saturday.

Technically, UMC was a division II hockey team, they just played in a D-III conference. This means they could just play the conference schedule, but were inelligible for the D-III playoff. There still are a couple D-II hockey teams left, but with no D-II championship, they are in limbo.

Crookston had a very good juco hockey program, but the move to D-II did in hockey. They couldn't support a move to D-I. If they ever dropped to D-III, they could bring back D-III hockey.

NDSU hockey has added 2 regular season series against Bemidji State University (club team). There have been years the BSU club team has been good, other years they have been rotten. Who knows? But, a good local team to play. Hopefully they become ACHA someday.

NDSU drops the season opener at nationally ranked Robert Morris (IL) 7-1 tonight. Bison have only been on the ice for six practices and have a lot of freshman, plenty of room to improve. Let's see what game two brings tomorrow. You can watch online if you are bored at: http://www.robertmorris.edu/eaglesportsnetwork/

NDSU was swept by #18 Robert Morris (IL) over the weekend, but will open the home schedule this weekend!

NDSU will host Crookston Friday and Saturday night at Southwest Ice Arena in South Fargo.

Game time is 7 pm both nights.

Tickets at $5 for adults and students are FREE!

Come cheer on the Bison hockey team during homecoming weekend!

(Last year NDSU beat Crookston 6-3 at the Coliseum in Fargo and lost 9-1 at the old barn in Crookston. They will meet four times this year.)
