Bad Bison: North Dakota State proved a lot by completing the first two-game road sweep of its two-year Summit League existence.

The Bison coasted to a 76- 53 win at Southern Utah last Thursday, apparently unfazed about playing at an elevation of 5,600 feet in what is generally considered the league’s most forbidding road venue.

Two nights later, they rallied from a 14-point deficit and pulled out a 65-60 overtime win at Missouri-Kansas City.

“There’s a long way to go before we start patting ourselves on the back, but it is a good start,” NDSU head coach Saul Phillips said.

The Bison’s 7-1 conference start is their best since going 8-1 to open North Central Conference play in 1974.

NDSU is 3-1 in conference road games after going only 3-6 in their first Summit League season.

“I think we’ve matured and our kids better understand the importance of defense, especially after playing through the league last year and seeing what some of these teams are capable of doing offensively on their home floors,” Phillips said.

At UMKC, the Bison held the Kangaroos without a field goal in the five-minute overtime.

On target: Oakland (Mich.) senior guard Erik Kangas made eight 3-pointers and scored a career-high 39 points in a 93-88 win at Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne last Saturday.

“I kind of had it going,” he told the Oakland Press. “It was one of those nights where the basket felt pretty big.”

Oral Roberts coaches will be glad when Kangas graduates. He made six 3-pointers against the Eagles in one half of the 2007 Summit League final, and almost rallied the Grizzlies in ORU’s Jan. 10 overtime win at the Mabee Center.

Kangas almost had 40 at IPFW, but missed a one-and- one foul shot with five seconds left. He settled for being Summit League player of the week...(for the rest click on the link)....
