I really like Tu-Uyen Tran's blog. I don't care about Grand Forks at all, but he can write about a budget hearing for the Park District and throw in enough observations to make it interesting.

I disagree with his comments about the flagship university, but he lives up north so what can you say...

Sounds like Chapman et al did a nice job. Here's the flagship quote:

I felt like NDSU came out being bigger than it is, as if it and not UND was the flagship.

Is there an official state 'flagship' school? Isn't it pretty much that the flagship is the one perceived as the largest/fastest growing/most important?
In that case, well, er, if the shoe fits, you know...

I think that everyone here can agree that UND has been considered the flagship university in ND for the past century.

It is only since the arrival of Dr. Chapman and his vision that we caught up with, and then subsequently passed, UND as the most powerful economic and political engine in ND.

Now UND is the one that is struggling a little while SU keeps a chugging.

Whatever the case, I for one believe that it is impressive that ND, with it's population base, has both UND and SU.

UND, as much as I hate to admit it, will rebound. It will be good for both the state of ND and NDSU. Competition makes you stronger, as long as your respond to that challenge appropriately!

The schools are both flagships.

What do we mean by the term "flagship" universities? The term applies, in all the cases I can think of, to the fully mature public universities serving most of states. In most cases, these institutions were the first public universities to be established in their states. Many of what we now call the flagship campuses were established in the extraordinary period of university building that took place in the United States in the roughly three decades from the mid-1850s to the mid-1880s. Many came into being after the Morrill Act of 1863 provided the federal grants of land to the states to establish public universities. Some states built two institutions, a land-grant college focused on agriculture and the "mechanical arts" as well as general education, and another more directed at classical education and the other professions. For example, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Washington, and Texas, among others, built separate institutions, while Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, and California combined the land-grant and liberal arts function on a single campus. These institutions formed the core of the public systems of higher education in their respective states. State teachers colleges, later evolving into regional state colleges or universities, formed the rest of the higher education institutions in most states.

I can't speak for the reporter on that blog, but I doubt very much that the definition you pulled of Berkely's website was on his mind when he made that flagship comment.

I am sure he was referring to the fact that for decades, UND had higher enrollment, greater budgetary freedoms, and to be truthful, a better reputation than NDSU. It was consistently ranked ahead of NDSU in both athletics and academics and at times, in research appropriations.

Oh and the true definition of the flag ship is the one that carries the commander, captain, and carries all the important stuff, like money, jewels, etc... while the rest of the ships comprise the remainder of the fleet.

I agree with that, thankfully Chapman came in and took NDSU to where it should have always been and even beyond that.

And just think, he was close to leaving for the University of Wyoming until the students held a rally for him...Class act and great leader.

UND - Big, Old, and Bulky. Has a tendency to light on fire and self destruct
