I went to watch Mike Felt last night. Hello. 32 points, 9 assists and 9 rebounds. Effortless. 6'2 guard. I went expecting a spot up 3 point shooter, and saw the next coming of Mike Nelson. He scores in all different ways. Gets to the line, hangs in the air. He is smooth.

In the game before his, Marshall Bjorkland played. He has an offer from us as well. 6'8 PF who gets every rebound. Man on the court. We need this kid. Very solid shot at him. His sister is or was in the WNBA. Plays mean. Grabs every rebound in his area. The future is bright.

Those two play eachother tonight in the finals of their tourney. Should be interesting to see the stats. Both teams rolled. Felt jumps center and they play basically 5 guards. Bjorkland's team is really talented. I expecte Sibley East to roll, but Felt will score a bunch. I was shocked at how impressive Felt's passes were. He got his team involved and really controlled the tempo.

Joe is from Dickinson High, not Dickinson Trinity. I'd be ecstatic if the Bison could get him being from the area originally.

My brother is the Head Girls Coach for Sibley East who is playing in that same tournament and he said its actually a pretty good possibility Bjorkland could come to NDSU mainly because of the Ag Program at NDSU

Just hope Tubby or Iowa State don't call....and he may very well be wearing the green and gold. I was very impressed with his game. Kid is a beast. Loved the way he was grabbing rebounds with two hands and controlling the ball. Sort of reminded me of how Kevin Love dominated the glass at UCLA last year.

My brother just called me and said that Sibley East (Marshal Bjorklund) beat Redwood Valley (Mike Felt) 78-63. To win the Redwood Valley Holiday Tournement. He didn't have stats but he said both Marshall and Felt had a ton of points.

In rivals.com, Chip Rank, 6'6 205, from Cedarburg, Wisconsin is listed as having an offer for the 2010 class. According to the article I saw, he is a phenomenal athlete - also a very good QB.

I added Chip Rank(thanks tony) and Josh Gasser who both are from Wisconsin to the 2007 list of offers. Both sound like they would be good gets, hopefully our Wisconsin connections pay off.

Josh Gasser article from scout...

Class of 2010 Intro: Josh Gasser

By Nate Latsch
BillikenReport.com
Posted Jan 12, 2009

Port Washington (Wis.) point guard Josh Gasser received his first scholarship offer, from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, during the summer after his freshman year. The high-scoring junior now has several offers and has seen an increase in his recruiting this season.

Its picked up a lot lately, Gasser said Sunday night. A lot of bigger schools are interested. More Big Ten schools are interested.
A 6-foot-4, 185-pound junior point guard, Gasser has scholarship offers from a variety of schools: North Dakota State, Wisconsin-Green Bay, Saint Louis, Northern Iowa, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and others.

Gasser is currently in wait-and-see mode with his recruiting as more and more schools show interest.

He has drawn attention recently from schools like Iowa, Northwestern, Iowa State, Indiana and Illinois.

They have been checking out the Port Washington junior and Gasser has been checking them out as well. He will make an unofficial visit to Northwestern this weekend.

Im visiting a bunch of those schools or I have visited, he said.

But no one from that group of schools has extended a scholarship offer at this time.

I think Northwestern and Iowa could (offer), Gasser said. Im not positive yet. They seem very interested in me, but well see.

Gasser has plenty of time. Hes off to an impressive start with his high school team and has all summer traveling with the Wisconsin Swing to try to make a favorable impression on those coaches.

The Port Washington Pirates are off to a 5-2 start going into Tuesdays game against visiting Slinger.

Gasser is averaging 27.3 points per game, has made 63 of 79 free throws (79.7 percent) and has knocked down 12 3-pointers. He opened the season with a 41-point performance, including 18 free throws, against Catholic Memorial.

Gasser averaged 10 points per game as a freshman, which ranked third on the Pirates, and a team-high 21.7 points per game as a sophomore. He made 31 3-pointers as a sophomore and made 84.5 percent of his free throw attempts (137 of 162).

The junior point guard is 82 points away from hitting 1,000 for his career, but when asked to describe his game, Gasser doesnt point to his scoring ability.

I dont see myself as a scorer, he said. I think the best thing about me is I pretty much can do a little bit of everything. I think everything is just solid. It helps me out a lot.

Gasser sites his toughness and decision-making as two of his best attributes, which go well together with his good size (6-4) to play the point guard position.

But the Port Washington junior is smart enough to know he has to get better to play in college and is working on trying to improve his athleticism. He knows hell have to defend smaller and quicker guards in college.

As Gasser works to improve his game in preparation of playing at the next level, hell continue on with the recruiting process of having coaches watch and evaluate him and making unofficial visits to schools so he can do his homework on them.

Im just going to weigh my options, Gasser said. Id love to play in the Big Ten and stay close to home. Thats a conference that fits my style. If that doesnt work out, well see what happens.

before we go an recruit any good players for the future, we gotta get the dump of the BSA remodeled and looking somewhat decent...we're not gonna get any players showing them that

Mr. Burgundy
01-18-2009, 01:11 AM
The players locker room is nice now....but the BSA is a dump. However, we do draw a large crowd, and it can get loud...but it is a brutal facility. We need the donation to get the dome expanded, coaches offices in the new facility as well as a players room. Huge advantage in recruiting.

Joe Hanstad is averaging 21 ppg for Dickinson High and is one of the top scorers in the state and had 32 points in his last game vs. Bismarck. I have some information that he has some offers from other mid-majors and is drawing some interest from some power conference teams.

Watched Mandan, the number 1 ranked team in North Dakota class A beat Dickinson last night. Huge night for two underclassmen! Hanstad had 35 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists while being double teamed much of the game. For Mandan 6'7" junior Brian Kielpinski had 35 points and 14 boards, shooting 17 for 20 from the field. Are we looking at Kielpinski? Great body, huge wingspan, good hands, and a nice touch down low! Its not very often you see two players of this caliber in the same game out here in western North Dakota

War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana is huge (13,000) and very "big time" looking. Not quite on the same level as say University of Illinois but pretty close. However, both times I've been there they've curtained off one of the ends because with just around 1,000 - 2,000 people in attendance it can look pretty cavernous in there.

If Kielpinski can add some mass and get stronger he is a D1 caliber player... IMO he is someone we should at least be looking at...

It is real nice but pretty small. Some sources say 3,000, others say 4,000. Either way, it's a shame such a nice looking venue isn't more "big time".

RIDGE from SCIENCE. get him NOW!!

Mr. Burgundy
02-06-2009, 03:27 AM
I am all in with Lakes on this one (That is hard to say).....Ridge down at NDSCS is EXACTLY the player that we need. He has a million dollar NBA body.....and the fire we need. If he was hitting his outside shot a bit more, he would have serious offers. He is an undersized big man that would be perfect for us. If he was taller....well, he wouldn't be at NDSCS. SO before you complain that he isn't 6'10, just remember that a player like this has to have a flaw in order to get to Fargo. I think this is a gamble we take. Not very many TALL guys hurt us in the Summit. We need this type of athlete the next couple of years. GET RIDGE!

I've said from the beginning of the transition, keeping these types of kids in ND is going to be a key in our mens Bball future. ND may not have a ton of D1 Bball talant throughout the state, but the kids we do produce usually end up being pretty ok. Just in the last 5-10 years who have we had: Kraft, Boshee, Jacobson, and Dufault more recently to name a few, plus I know there are others that I'm not thinking of off the top of my head. Could you imagine the teams we could've assembeled if all of those types of guys stayed home and played their D1 ball at NDSU?

obv with a boschee or jacobson we would of been an amazing team...boschee is all time 3pt scorer at KU and Jacobson had a good career at Utah....Even if we were DI and eligible for the dance I don't see those 2 staying and going to NDSU when they got scholarships from big schools.

Not every 6'5 guy is going to be the next Ben Woodside, clearly that wasn't the point though. If you watch the kid play regardless of his height, he's got serious game and he is a definite pure point guard. If he was 5'5, then I could see a reason to be concerned

Bisonville regular "Jugular" is at the NDSCS game in Iowa tonight watching Ridge. Sounds like they are getting dominated, but Ridge has a "million dollar body." He said that K-State is there for sure, as well as UMKC, and about 10 other schools. He will update us on how Ridge looked. This was a big game for them.

I just got back from the game and I was pleasantly surprised with Ridge. The guy is a beast but he's more than that. He picked up his 2nd foul with about 8 minutes left in the 1st half, so his coach yanked him and they proceeded to get down about 18 at the half. He dominated at times in the 2nd half and even showed some handles on a phenomenal spin move in the paint. Basically if he wanted a rebound, he got it. He explodes when he's jumping--he just gets to the ball so quick. His defense was lacking, but it almost seemed like his coach told him to do whatever it took not to get any fouls.

Overall, I'd love to land this kid. I don't know that he is going to be the "go to guy" but every team needs a guy like this--a GREAT athlete that is going to do some little things for you. Plus, he'll look good walking off the bus. The guy has basketball skills and would definitely help us next year. Anyone know our chances?

On a side note, I really question the coach from NDSCS. Until the last couple minutes, every time they shot a FT he had all 4 of the other guys go back and get ready for D. Huh? With a guy like Ridge, why wouldn't you try to have him get an offensive rebound? And then at the end when they were shooting FT's, he actually got a couple offensive rebounds. They fought back and only lost by 3 and had a half court shot at the buzzer for the tie.

The funny comments are that Felt can't create his own shot. I still don't understand how a gaurd can average 30 points for two straight seasons and not be able to create his own shot.

But this one takes the cake....

A couple of things, first of all what does Tveidt have to do with the 09-10 recruiting class?
Second of all, Chad White is quicker and a better wing that Tveidt will ever be. Watched him play in high school and though he was good, Sam Williard was the bright spot on that team, a solid center that was fundamentally sound.... Letting Tveidt go to NDSU doesn't bother me, the class we recruited that year was better then NDSU's anyway.... Letting Williard get by bothered me a bit more, the early signings of Sargent and Moss was pretty good though, and we had Cordova....
.

A SD high school player that has never played a minute of college basketball and has verballed to SDSU is already better than Tveidt will ever be.

One more post...

NDSU seems to have been scuffling on the recruiting trail of late.....

Our recruits had offers from the Horizon League, CAA, and Big 12 but yet we are scuffling.

Hanstad is a stud no doubt. I watched him play at Bismarck about a week or so ago. He is quick, can jump well and has a quick release on his shot, didnt really force any shots and I was impressed with several of his passes. He definitely is not a ball hog. I fear he will get many offers from the big schools before he graduates.

Esley Thorton guarded Hanstad much of the game and I think he had 22pts. I was impressed with Esley's athletisim, dude can get off the floor but he has a slow release on his shot. I must see one of his football games this fall and check out his arm strength.

An interesting player to watch in the next few years is Dexter Werner from Bismarck High. IMHO, he was the 2nd best ball player on the court against Dickinson and he is a Freshman. I think he is 6'4" and have heard his dad is a huge man so there will be growth potential. He was not intimidated at all.

Another tidbit on Marshall Bjorklund. He has been playing all year with a torn labrum in his left shoulder. It was originally a football injury, was operated on once, but reinjured in AAU ball last summer. There are now rumors that the shoulder is really bothering him, possibly to the extent that he may be unable to play AAU this summer, and he may be headed for more surgery. If he can't play AAU, it probably increases the chances that he will be a Bison, but I hope that he can put this injury behind him.

I wouldn't mind seeing the last scholarship used on a juco, for a couple of reasons. I think it would be great to add a player who can step in right away, ideally a guy with some real athletic presence. The other reason I think a juco would be nice, is it would help even out the classes. As it stands, next year the Bison will have 4 seniors, but only 2 juniors (Tveidt and Coleman) and 1 sophomore (Carlson). If this doesn't change we are looking at a couple of years in the near future where recruiting could be hampered a bit by a lack of available scholarships.

Of course, it's not that easy because everybody wants an athletic juco who can help right away, and many juco players have other issues which may make them less than an ideal fit for a program like NDSU.

That would be interesting--a potential recruiting battle between Bison basketball and Bison football. NDSU offered Willlams for football, and as of signing day, I'm pretty sure they remained interested. He is a very talented DB/WR. He didn't sign with anyone for football--possibly because he prefers basketball. He is the only starter on his HS BB team that doesn't yet have a D-I scholarship. The other 4 are going to Minnesota, Notre Dame, Arizona State, and Santa Clara!

On a side note, the Star Tribune has a couple of stories (with video) today on the controversial Hopkins basketball program:

More on Marcus Williams..I wonder if Saul is hesitant because the Bison will already have two new point guards next year (Drew Lundberg and Nate Zastrow)? Despite that, (all of this is based on what I've read, not personal viewing) Williams could add something different because he is touted as a superb athlete. Lundberg is supposed to have excellent basketball skills and he is a good athlete (leading receiver on his HS football team), but probably not in Williams' class as a pure athlete. If there is a knock on Zastrow, it is that while he is a great shooter with great basketball savvy, he is only an average athlete.

GopherHole article on Marcus Williams per BisonNeil:
http://www.gopherhole.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=961

Williams has both basketball and football offers from NDSU. He also apparently has a BB offer from UNI, and several other FB offers, but--"Next steps are to keep looking. Im going to keep looking for a good school, a good opportunity, and where to go to school at. Right now, I need to finish school, and do well."

My interpretation is that he still hopes for a high major basketball offer. For what it's worth, I'm skeptical that an offer from UNI for basketball is still on the table. UNI signed a highly regarded point guard this fall, and they got a commitment from a juco point guard in mid-February. I doubt they'd bring in 3 point guards in one year..

New article about Marshall Bjorklund, the 6'7" junior forward from Sibley East, on MinnesotaPreps.com today. Unfortunately, it is behind the subscription wall:
http://minnesotapreps.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=920304

The article is highly complimentary of his play and development, but not a lot of new info. Bjorklund is averaging 20.7 points and 15.7 rebounds with 20 double-doubles in 23 games. A quote from Bjorklund's coach confirms that NDSU, SDSU, and Northern Illinois have offered scholarships. Minnesota has been interested, but not sure where that stands. Other teams are watching.

Marcus Williams, the Hopkins PG who has an offer from NDSU, is at #3.
Nate Wolters, PG from St. Cloud Tech, is at #1.
Ty Storrusten of Pelican Rapids is #8.

Wolters situation is pretty interesting. He is a big (6'3") lead guard who is an excellent ball handler and scorer. The Bison had some interest earlier, but I think they decided to go with Mike Felt, instead. That decision may have been based in part on how their individual skills will fit into the team. Felt is recognized as a great shooter who may be able to play a role similar to Mike Nelson in the future. Wolters is not the same kind of pure shooter. Nonetheless, Wolters has been tremendous, starting last summer in AAU and continuing through the high school season. He has been so productive and clutch, that some observers are pushing him for Mr. Basketball in MN--over phenomenal talents like Royce White and Rodney Williams. Wolters had some lower D-I offers in the fall, including SDSU, but he turned them all down at the time.

Still isn't clear what sport(s) Williams or Storrusten will play in college.

I saw game film of Tech vs. Fergus and Wolters is a very fine talent. Pretty quick cross over, always goes left. He's a fair shooter, but can really finish at the rim. He has a nose for the ball on defense, he had 5 or so steals by coming off his guy and stripping the ball. He's a good passer, and cool customer on the court. He had 37 points in that game. But I heard there's a good possbility that he is going to play baseball in college.

Mandan is in the WDA championship tonight. Kielpinski at 6'7" is a junior and has improved a lot during the course of this year, but I'm afraid his foot speed isn't what is needed at the Summit League level. He doesn't have great hands or much range, but his defense is solid.

Add two kids from Southern California being looked at:

Dakota Downs....6' 6" and growing. Great athlete and great kid. 3.7 gpa...needs a year of pumping iron. Do a search for his name & Hemet, CA. You'll see pics & stats.

John Balwigaire....6' 2" point guard....has spent one year at a JUCO in Arizona. Check him out on MaxPreps. He'd be a major get. PAC-10 caliber point guard. Needed to get his grades up. Really nice kid. Major floor leader. Ultra-quick.

Both played for West Valley High School in Hemet, CA and won the CIF championship in their division last year. CIF is the Southern California championships. We don't have a state championship. It would be too big. Two other teammates are on their way to San Diego State & Oregon State. And yes...Colorado State is looking at them also.

Because the connections/networks are almost the same. Tim & Craig have a huge network into the Bison recruiting region. And in this situation, both programs know someone that is close to the situation.

And I agree about the power of the two conferences. It's obvious. But NDSU is in a position to notch it up...especially if they make it to the Big Dance.

The Bison are by no means a small team for a mid-major. Unfortunately, there are a couple competitors in the Summit League (Oakland and ORU) who have exceptionally athletic bigs.

Calcaterra had an offer from the Gophers at one time, but it isn't clear how interested Tubby is now. He does have offers from the SEC (Auburn), MWC (Col State), and MVC (Iowa State). He plays against some pretty mediocre competition, and he will play AAU ball this summer for the first time. The AAU circuit will probably determine a lot, but he'll most likely end up at a bigger conference school.

You probably know much more than I about Gopher recruiting. There has been stuff on the Gopher boards that cast doubt. For example, this one from the GopherHole on Feb 25 (nice tidbit thrown in for Bison fans on Marshall Bjorklund):

Calcaterra has alot to prove this summer and his "offer" from MN is a little complicated. Let's just say that if Chad walked into Bierman today and wanted to commit, I don't think they would accept it. Chad is still an interesting prospect but hasn't progressed like some had hoped. He needs a big summer and switching to Pulley will be big for him.

Marshall Bjorklund, as has been written many times, is a beast but undersized and will go to NDSU if he doesn't grow 2-3 inches. He wants to be a Gopher but not likely unless he finds that Leuer magic.

He is correct. Chad does have a lot to work on this summer. But he does still hold an "offer" of sorts. I think for Marshall to get an offer he has to add a little weight and grow a little taller. Right now,he would be a tweener in the Big ten

Already has offers from Duke, UNC, KU, etc. His dad played at ISU and McDermott's son is the same age and also a pretty good player (averages 14 points off the bench!). There was a little talent in this game...Barnes (obviously), McDermott will garner some small D1 or D2 looks I would guess, a JR OL recruit that has offers from Iowa and Iowa St and a SG that is going to Yale. Damn, I'm watching the Iowa 4A state championship on TV right now. Here's a name: Harrison Barnes from Ames High. He's only a junior but is a top 10 recruit in the nation for next year (all positions). OH MY. Then on the other team (Linn Marr) there was a kid that is going to Air Force and a FR PG that is very good.

Apparently, the McDermott kid holds an offer from UND.

Supposedly NDSU has been checking him out. 6' 11" and could easily get bigger.

I agree....Minnesota will probably take one of the following for their big

Juniors:

6-foot-10 Chad Calcaterra,
7-foot-0 Jake Kreuser
6-foot-11 Alec Brown

That leaves 2 for other D1 programs... Word is Miles has been snooping around Brown's school lately....Wonder if he crossed paths with Saul?

While watching this video I noticed that he does not finish with his left hand around the basket. If he is going to be big then he needs to learn to use his other hand around the basket. D1 guys are much better shot blockers and will not give you the room to shoot like that.

agreed, if we want to beat and play with these big-time schools on a regular basis or every once in awhile, we need a true big man... our guard play could get it done in a league like the Summit, but when you go up against teams like KU who have an equally or better backcourt with a premier bigman, just good guards arent going to get it done...

I think that 'tall' is really important...but against a guy like Aldrich, having a wide-body or two just to get in his way would have really helped. Maybe someone that's in the 6' 6" to 6' 8" category with some width and strength. Not arguing. Just a thought as I watched Aldrich have his way inside. He's going to be tough for anyone to shut down. Kansas could surprise people in the rest of the tournament if they continue to shoot well.

I spoke to some players and coaches during the flood as they were helping us sandbag, and I asked them about the 3 incoming freshman. Aaberg, Zastrow and Felt.

It sounds like Zastrow will come in and compete for the starting job with Lundberg at the point. Felt will get minutes at the two and it sounds now like they may not be able to redshirt Aaberg as he is playing too well and his length is what they need. He is REALLY good according to a few of the players that have played with him. They said his wingspan and his shot blocking ability is unreal. Also noted that Nagle is a BEAST. HUGE kid. Nobody wanted to guard him in practice as he is a beast and plays very rough. PERFECT. Getting Aaberg and Nagle to the post together possibly next year is great. BOth kids are 6'9 and play very differently, which is a great combo. I am more excited about next year everytime I talk to these guys.

NDSU is in great shape right now to land a quality big man for the class of 2010 as there are 4 legit 6'9-6'11 D1 kids in the Minnesota junior class but right now all are sort of projects or a little raw and thin and schools are waiting to see more from them.

Cloquet's 6'9 Chad Calcaterra has the best offer list although it's not for sure some of his early offers are still on the table. He has potential but schools are waiting for him to take his game to the next level. Switched to Howard Pulley AAU this summer so he will get alot of exposure. NDSU offer.

Some believe, me included, that the best one of the bunch will eventually be Henry Sibley's Jake Krueser. He is a legit 6'11, long, good footwork, nice touch out to 12 feet. UWGB, UNI have offered and NDSU is close. MN watched him closely at tourny and wouldn't be suprised if he ended up there.

New name on the scene is Winona's 6'10 Alec Brown. Had a nice showing in state tourny on Wed. and should see some mid-level offers start to come in. NDSU watched him as did UNI. Will team with Krueser for the new Pump N Run AAU team. NDSU should have a legit shot unless he blows up this summer.

Last would be Ellsworth 6'10 Trever Gruis. Probably not alot of love for Ellsworth after the Cody Schilling episode last year. Gruis plays today in the championship game and is a kid some of the big shcools have looked at but so far no offers. will play with the Dakota Schoolers this summer. NDSU certianly will be in the mix if they choose to recruit him.

I guess you alos could include Henry Sibley's 6'8 Mike Rostempour, who already holds an NDSU offer, although I wouldn't put him in the category of centers like the rest of these guys.

SteelBison, I agree to a point, but Carlson has a fantastic future. He was behind Tveidt and Winks....umm....well, there weren't alot of minutes to be had. He has a nose for the ball and has played in practice against these guys. Keep in mind, in college hoops, it is rare for freshman to really contribute alot. Most take the track that Tveidt did. He really came on as a sophomore when minutes became available.
I was down on Flowers alot, but he played nicely in the post season, and will be very important next year. I still miss the fire he had against ORU at home early in the year. I think he had 13 and really showed the spark we needed from the post.

Not tall enough for a shooting guard and he isn't a point guard.

If he was 6'3 or 6'4 He could play here..but 5'11 shooting guard is impossible at the Div 1 level

I agree Carlson didn't get a lot of minutes..But my concern is he is more of a post up player but too short to be successful at this level..I hope I'm wrong!! Flowers is very raw..needs to refine his post moves..Get better at handling the ball. But the ORU game I thought we had something also..That was by far his highlight of the year....

I'm glad the Bison are back in on Wolters. The kid had a tremendous senior season. Is there any interest or being looked at for the ones that don't have interest or offers???

It would be nice if we could land some a 3 star or so either juco or freshmen.

I believe that the Bison have some interest in Kreuser. Apparently, Dave Richman ran into Tim Miles while watching Kreuser and Rostampour work out recently. The Bison have also been watching Vinard Birch, but I have no idea how interested they are or are not.

Huge hoops recruiting weekend for the Bison. Visiting Wolters today and hosting him this weekend. This would be huge. He was an absolute stud in the MN state tourney....especially against Hopkins. 6'5 guard would be great. It would also put this recruiting class (on paper) as good as any class that we have signed since.....well....

Yup, I'm anxiously awaiting word on Wolters' decision. Here are a couple of tidbits I turned up on this kid while hoping he isn't this year's Austin Dufault..

All-Star game: Wolters shows that he belongs (http://www.sctimes.com/article/20090404/SPORTS03/104040002/1002/SPORTS)

Nate Wolters led all scorers with 23 points, was second in rebounds with six and had three assists and two steals with no turnovers.

For St. Cloud Tech fans, that's basically what Wolters does every game.

But Friday night, the Tigers' senior guard did it in an all-star game featuring the state's top 40 senior boys basketball players.

"He's just a great player," said Maple River's Tim Anderson, who coached Wolters and the Blue All-Stars at Halenbeck Hall. "He's just fundamentally sound.

"And he does so many things you just don't coach. He's flashy without trying to be flashy. He's a great passer, but he can score any time he wants to. And, as we found out yesterday in practice, he's a great defender."

Report on AAU game from last May (http://tchoops.blogspot.com/2008/05/sabes-invitational-friday-action.html)

Game 1 of the night was the MN Comets Elite vs Dakota Schoolers. Out of the gate, Nate Wolters (St. Cloud Tech) vs Mike Felt (Redwood Valley)...

Final Score 78-73 MN Comets win in 2 OT. Nate Wolters with 30 pts for the winners and was a force on the defensive end vs Mike Felt.

Well, lets bring on the next kid, as Wolters isn't coming to NDSU. I just heard. WOW. I am not so shocked that he isn't coming to NDSU, I sort of thought that would be 50/50 with CSU, but he has named his final 3. Augie, SDSU, and CSU. I thought SDSU was out last week, but I guess not. He is a good player. Sounds like he wasn't thrilled about being a part of a recruiting class that already had 2 guards. Not positive, but it does sound like we will bring in some other talents.

Kind of surprised SDSU is still in the running just because we recruited him hard last fall and he decided not to sign and we got the impression that he didn't see SDSU as a good fit. Maybe he changed his mind because we recently got a pretty good recruit out of Iowa for 2010 and we're really starting to bring in good talent with 3 solid 09 recruits.
I still have a feeling he'll end up going to Augustana, which would be weird that SDSU and NDSU both lost recruiting battles to Augie for Cody Schilling and Nate Wolters.

Well, Augustana is a decent school and it does have a really nice practice facility. Beyond that, why a basketball player with Wolters' ability would pick Augie over CSU, SDSU, and NDSU is beyond me.

He said going to a D-I school isnt the deciding factor for him and thats why Augustana is still a factor.

Per MinnesotaPreps, we can add Steve Tecker (http://rivalshoops.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=2&pr_key=96609), a 6'5" junior forward from Superior, WI to the "interest" list. Tecker already has offers from St. Louis U and Bucknell.

I'm assuming your wife is from Rock Valley and not St. Cloud, but if I am correct in this assumption then your wife's home town has multiple DI players in the same class. Marcus Heemstra, a 6'9" wing, just verballed to SDSU this week and his teammate Jordan Dykstra, 6'9" PF/C, verballed to Iowa State during his freshman year, which I believe is the earliest high school BB commitment in Iowa history.

I know this might be shocking considering their lack of talent, but Rock Valley won the Iowa State A Boy's Basketball Tournament this year :D

I would like to clarify something on the Cody Schilling ordeal.... the main reason Augie got him because they were the only one offering a full-ride scholarship....

SDSU and NDSU both gave him the you walk on, redshirt, and we might give you a scholarship....

Nate Walters- I really don't know where he wants to go.... his new final 3 is SDSU, CSU and Augie.... now last week it was NDSU, CSU, Augie, St. Cloud St. and 1 other.... 3 weeks before that it was Augie, St. Cloud State and a few other D-II's.... So until he signs on the ................ I'm going to reserve judgement, however from what I am hearing there is a good chance he signs tomorrow wherever, Saturday at the latest.

Mr. Burgundy

I am going to agree with someone on the jacks board about Wolters. Kid is a "mid major" type player that until about a month ago was either going to SDSU or D2....and he is acting like he is deciding between Duke, UNC, and Kentucky. He has told the coaches several times that he needs more time. Kid could you drag your feet any longer? Do you want to announce your decision live on ESPN? Halftime of an NBA game? I mean a while back his DAD posted that SDSU was no longer an option, suddenly they are. Nothing against the kid, and he is a great player and a great person from a great family, but seriously. Pull the trigger. NDSU wanted Felt and got Felt. Then backed off. He then exploded at the MN state tourney and we jumped back on.
Make a decision. Your options are all good schools. I am not saying I am glad we didn't get him, not at all, I think he can play...I am just saying that I am PUMPED we have 3 kids coming in that are CRAZY about playing for the Bison. I liked how they pulled the trigger as juniors and didn't make this mess out of a mid major recruiting period. He didn't like the fact that we have 2 incoming freshman at guard and a transfer coming in at PG....depth chart. If he doesn't like a depth chart, he better not go to CSU, as that depth chart is going to get better and better. Good kid, I hope he makes a decision that makes him happy. Don't turn this into anything negative, just my opinion.
I can tell you this, the kids that we have been on the last few weeks are athletes. The coaches were targeting more of a slashing wing type player more than a PG, but Wolters was too good to pass up. They are all over the region looking at some athletes. They sound really good. Wisco, Indiana, Illinois, MN.

One thing that might be overblown a bit is that he isn't coming to NDSU because of depth with Felt and Zastrow, but SDSU already has 2 good guards in the 09 class as well, 6'5 Brayden Carlson and 6'7 Chad White.

I really hope he decides to Tuesday, that way he can wait until some of the post NFL draft chat is over....this is huge. People need to know about the kid from St. Cloud that is trying to decide what mid major he is going to play at. Come on. kid is good, but he has been dragging his feet on this decision for TWO YEARS. I could care less about him now that he deleted NDSU, but the coaches are tired of this as well. i sort of hope he picks SDSU so I can post his Dad's post on the SDSU board about how he took them off the board. Now that is good stuff. You have to love young kids and their decision making.

Per the SDSU message board, it looks like Wolters will sign with SDSU. Nothing is certain yet as he isn't talking to anyone. He hasn't spoken to Nagy since last Wednesday and won't take any calls from a certain coach in Colorado. Pretty weird. I would say at this point, he has burnt some bridges and has not handled this process very well. I get that it is a big decision, and this has nothing to do with him not being a Bison. I wanted him, but he didn't handle it well with our coaches either. If he is a Jack, it will help them. I am just saying that he isn't the #1 recruit in the nation, and Jay Bilas and Dicky V aren't going to his house this weekend. He told coaches he would decide by last Sunday OR Tuesday (depending on the school) and he still has yet to decide. The patience is running out at the respective schools. His Dad at one point posted on the SDSU board that he would NOT play for Nagy and SDSU. Good get for SDSU...if that is his choice. If I was SDSU, I would be more excited about their other signings as they want it bad. They are local kids with talent. They verballed early, signed on time and weren't in for the drama. I am rooting for them...but not when they play the Bison!

Just an observational comment, but if a parent is publically verbalizing feelings on this coach or on that school, it sounds like a possible nightmare for the coach that does get him.

As a player directed by his parents in dealing with coaches and the press in the recruiting process should be like playing poker. Don't let people read your hand until you sign the dotted line and then speak highly of all the people involved in the process.

Here's the now infamous message from Wolters' dad:

Just a couple of things regarding my son, Nate Wolters.

First, the earlier posting about Nate having narrowed his choices to two colleges was not true.

Also, it is true that Nate will not be going to South Dakota State. Basically, SDSU wanted Nate to sign early, but we had some concerns that could not be addressed until after the basketball season. SDSU was aware of our concerns, but continued to push for Nate to sign early and even sent the National Letter of Intent to him last week. Finally, this past weekend, it became clear that there was no reason to continue the recruiting process with them. As far as we were concerned, it ended Saturday evening with an email to the SDSU coach.

Roger Wolters

My best guess is that one of their concerns was whether Nagy would still be around--pretty legitimate at the time.

That said, I am becoming more embarassed by the day that I was pumping this kid up on this board. I still think he has the talent to be a difference maker on the court, but the way he and his dad have handled the recruitment process has been painful to observe.

Bro...be patient. You have no idea how this went down. I personally think this is a blessing. They went after Nate because he played so well in the MN state tourney. Prior to that, they wanted a wing. They are back on that plan now. They have had two kids in, and will have a FREAK in this weekend. I am not even going to say where he is from, but he is a 6'7 wing with length.

I personally feel that IF we fill this spot with a kid of this ability (Yes, he has and has had other D1 offers), and Marshall Bjorkland, we will be JUST fine. Again, we signed two guards, that both played point in high school, and have a transfer in Drew Lundberg who was playing for Northern Iowa as a true freshman.....the backcourt is in great shape. We need an athletic wing and a banger more than anything right now. If Marshall does become a Bison, you guys will be very happy with recruiting. I guess you just have to trust me on that one. Enjoy the day. After how Nate went about this process, I am ok with how it turned out. Holding a press conference....sweet. Even Nagy was frustrated with how it was going.

"Terrible recruiting?" Given that this will be the first year he's been at the head of the recruiting effort, I wouldn't say that landing a dude like Aaberg plus two guards like Felt and Zastrow is a bad accomplishment at all. We need a powerful inside game and Aaberg goes a long way to help us with that. It's no Fab Four, but then a class like that comes around once a decade (if that).

Who the hell rags on Saul, anyway? Far as I can tell, being the first coach to lead any NDSU hoops team to the Field of 64 is a pretty big undertaking.
