"One trey started a 20-0 run to open the game and the Bison blew out the Ladies 87-40 on Saturday afternoon before 855 fans. "

There had to be more than 855 there right? I have to admit I was not, but there are more than 855 season tickets sold, let alone students attending. This must be an error, right Road????? ;)

They could play doubleheaders, I'm not saying all the time but if the teams play on the same day it makes all the sense in the world to play the games back to back.

The issue, and I have brought this up before is they cannot do double headers with the current Season ticket process.

Different sales of Men and Women. There are people that have bought only Men, and the others only Women.

How do you tell ticket holder Y that Ticket holder X has the same seat and got here first?

I don't know but it looks like SDSU has figured it out so it can be done.

I would say there were no more than 855,
and some would say that was a generous
figure. Only a handful of students in the
entire section.

Season tickets are sold separately for mens and womens basketball. I have no idea how many of each were sold. 855? Sad but true.

I hope there's a good showing for ORU tonight, but the next two games after that will probably be sub-1000. Jamestown on the 20th will be brutal and a potentially good draw in Creighton might be hit hard by being stuck between X-mas & New Years. After that, things should improve greatly. Even a dog like Utah Valley should pull in a great crowd since it's the final home game and probably Senior Night. The last two games were ugly, but they were the worst games on the schedule.

I assume that SDSU's 5pm/7:30pm games is a single gate, not individual gates, correct. So, add NDSU men and women together to compare to SDSU?

NDSU v. Centenary 3,192 + 855 = 4,047
SDSU v. ORU 3,071/2,659 = 3,071 or 5,730
NDSU v. ORU 4,165 + xxx =

You are sort of correct. I bought a GA ticket to the ORU double header and it cost me $15. For a single game GA ticket it's $11.

Very poor showing by the fans monday night against ORU. However, great showing by the Bison women!

Didn't the Bison WBB ave around 4K during their DII run in the 90s??

As I was reading this thread I thought something to the same effect. There was a time not too long ago when the Men & Women played back to back games and it was pretty packed for the Women's game and then cleared out quite a bit for the Men's. The solution to their attendance woes is to just WIN and be dominant like they once were. Whether that happens or not, no on can tell right now, but here's to hoping it does!

caveat: NDSU attendance figures from the DII era are suspect

NDSU set the DII WBB attendance season average record of 3,971 in 1994. NDSU dominated the attendance records during the 90's; leading DII from 1992-2000, 1988, and 2003-04(UND lead DII in 2001-02).

Top NDSU seasons:
1. 1994: 3971
2. 1997: 3932
3. 1995: 3814
4. 1996: 3707
5. 1992: 3298
6. 1999: 2940
7. 1993: 2851
8. 2003: 2805
9. 2000: 2563
10. 2004: 2512

*NCAA started keeping these records in 1983
**Prior to 1997, attendances from doubleheader games were excluded

If those stats include combined games with the men (which they do), then they are pretty meaningless today. In DI, all the gates are separate. We have no way of knowing how many people would have shown in 1996 for a Women's only gate. No way of knowing, can't compare!

I wish people stop tying to compare apples and oranges.

MOST of the problem with lower attendance for women's games has to do with the monday night games and no longer having double header conference games.

I should have been a bit clearer. From 1983-1996, all M/W doubleheader attendance was excluded from the WBB averages. From 1997 onward, attendance from those doubleheaders was broken into two parts: 1. From gate opening to women's halftime, and 2. Women's halftime to the end of the men's game. The first number was reported as the WBB attendance and the sum of the two numbers was reported as the men's. It's why the 1990's NDSU and recent UND men's attendance figures were higher than the women's even though large numbers of fans left after the women's games. This system is still in place for schools that have doubleheaders(all but us and ORU in the Summit League).

It will be very difficult to match the numbers from the 90's for three reasons. First, we're not dominating our opponents like we were back then. Second, the doubleheaders helped with the casual fan looking for 4+ hours of family entertainment for a reasonable price. Third, Friday/Saturday night games are far more attractive than Saturday afternoon/Monday night games. Winning will help, as would a new arena, but it will take a ton of work to get back to the 3500-4000 level.

Oh, and we're not the only ones having problems. UND managed just 804 for their MBB game vs. VCSU last night. Their men are drawing about 50 more per game than our women.

I think part of the reason the womens attendence numbers have dropped off is due in part to the success of the mens team. I think in general people would rather watch men play and with their success they are pulling fans away from the women. When the women had big attendence figures they had great teams while the mens teams were down. Fans like to watch winners and with the success of the men more fans are going to gravitate toward them. If for some reason the mens team goes into the tank in the next few years I would think the women would draw much better.

Whats does everyone else think?

If a person goes to all the games, that's $40
for tickets. Times X for a family. They will
gravitate toward the perceived winners.
Many fans will choose either the men or women,
but not spend $'s for both sets of tickets.
Sat. afternoon & Monday night are worse
drawing times than Thurs. & Sat. nights.
I think the men have an advantage there.
Hopefully, the women will continue to improve
and more fans will get on the bandwagon.
They are entertaining to watch, IMO.

In my honest opinion, no matter what I would choose mens over womens anyday of the week. men are so much more fun to watch and the game as a whole is just so much quicker and more entertaining. As a whole I think people care about mens basketball over womens.

The Summit League will likely be switching the women's schedule to Thursday/Saturday just like the men's. Only problem is that when the men are at home, the women will be on the road, and vice-versa (no double-headers).
