proposed expenses paid for by the state for the next biennium:

NDSU:
07/08 98 million
09/10 127 million
change 29 million (30%)
$5,700/FTE/year

UND:
07/08 115 million
09/10 144 million
change 29 million (25%)
$7,600/FTE/year

better than before, but still ridiculous.

yes, ndsu students, if ndsu got a fair shake in bismarck you could have a $2,000 reduction in tuition per year or better facilities or more professors.....

Thats BOGUS!!! The two schools have comprable programs and have roughly the same amount of students. Why should UND get more money??? Besides...I thought Chapman had Hoeven's ear.

Or atleast I thought Hoeven liked NDSU more....

My personal opinion is that politics plays a major part in that as the NW legislators live and die with UND. What UND wants they get from the reps and sen up there. Hoven has to throw the NW reps something. This may sound like emperial fargo but UND is not all but a very big part of what makes the NW part of the state run. Fargo area reps have more masters to answer to. Grand Forks is what without the college and the air base? The Fargo area would hurt tremendously to without the college and say Microsoft but it would still be a functioning city. The Fargo reps have a lot of places and people to spread their cards around to and they do a very good job at it but they have more than one main influence to answer to.

So, how would the law school, and especially the medical school and that aviation stuff figure into this equation? I'm sure that those latter two are a pinch more expensive to operate...?

My Guess...old way of thinking of the two schools...farmers need federal money...Conrad/Dorgan.

Well for the new proposed budget (in total funds which I am assuming is including state and university funds)

Proposed Budget (http://www.nd.gov/fiscal/docs/budget/execbudgetsummary2009-11.pdf)

NDSU Research - 87,336,348
NDSU Extension Service - 42,265,835
Total Funds: 144,802,791

UND Medical Center - 34,488,501
Total Funds:193,040,705

I can see how the Med program needs some cash but not the law school, because how is that any different than any of the larger departments at ndsu like the Engineering, Art or Architecture, School of Business, School of Ag

Personally, I think the "LARGEST" School in the state should have a nicer chunk of the budget than it currently has....but thats just my two cents

UND general fund budget amt $144,486,043

NDSU general fund budget amt $127,545,474

These are the best numbers to compare. They exclude ag research, extension and medical school budgets. They are all separate line items in the budget. Total funds should not be used either, as they include things like the proposed $20,000,000 for NDSU to build new apartments.

*sighs* $230 a credit for tuition here...

I fully understand where my $400 in student fees and $450 in Civil Engineering fees are going, but where exactly does that tuition money go?

The budget also includes $11,000,000+ from the general fund for the 2nd phase of the new greenhouse complex now under construction (research budget), and $13,000,000 from the general fund for phase III of the Minard Hall renovation (I'm guessing phase I and II will get going in 2009). Also there is over $7,000,000 for past due repairs (unspecified) to campus buildings at NDSU.

There is also $40,000,000 in the budget for grants to college students. The current budget has around $6,000,000.

Your tuition money gets mixed in the big money pot with the state money and money from other sources to make the overall NDSU budget.

Road, pretty sure both Phases I and II are done and very impressive.

Before the game tomorrow consider checking it out, Minard and Festival Concert Hall are now connected, the work is top notch.

I think road is talking about the old part of Minard, that whole building is in dire need of renovation. The new annex is great though.

The addition between Minard and Festival is not phase I or II. That was a completely different project.

They are going to completely renovate the old portion of Minard. Unless I missed something, I didnt see any work going on there this year or last year. The first phase was exterior work. Pretty sure nothing has been done yet.

I agree Phase III is gutting Minard (something that is twenty years overdue).

You guys are right about I and II. They are starting the planning (not really the right term, it's been in the works for a long time) for it now, will begin work after students leave next spring.

I can confirm that the old part of Minard is still a shizz hole. The new part is very nice, yet very very warm on the third floor.

I will miss Minard 209 the seats are very comfortable and theres lots of reading to be done on the backs of the seats and on the desks, for when I'm not paying attention in calc class.

Heh.

I saw "Gus Frerotte will lead us to the Super Bowl" on the back of one of those seats.

That was before his second stint, from the first time around with the Vikes, replacing Culpepper.

Actually one of the phases includes adding another addition onto to Minard... Near the other recent addition, right where there is a machine shop or whatever it is.
