Anyone going? Gophers should do well as always. First look at the new Bison. Adam Aho won a title last year as well.

Kenny Moenkedick shared the title at 184 with his brother Phil (Concordia). Kirk Anderson (133) (lost to Jayson Ness) Gabe Mooney (141) and Adam Aho (165) finished second in their classes.

Anyone else think Gabe Mooney could qualify for NCAAs this year? Maybe not but I think he could have a good year.

Why did they share the title? Did they choose not to wrestle because they are brothers? (I know next to nothing about wrestling, so I don't know the reasons a match wouldn't happen.)

every year there is at least one match that ends up with shared champs
it usually is because of 2 gophers that dont want to wrestle each other

Anderson lost at '33 in the final to Ness, the #2 kid in the country. Bison had a freshman in the final at '25, Sprengle ?, but he lost to 5-time Minnesota state champ, Zach Sanders.

It's either that or you can only have so many matches in a day. That's the case for HS but I'm not sure about college.

I'm sure it's because they are brothers. Same reason most teammates don't wrestle final matches.

Not sure how much validity there is to this or if it was supposed to be a joke, but I had heard that their mother did not want them to wrestle

Like when Bart and Lisa had to play hockey against each other.

I'm sure potential for injury has something to do with it when it's teamates. No need to risk it when it's 2 guys that beat the crap out of each other all week in the wrestling room anyway. As far as the brothers go, not real sure what the call is on that.

One thing I noticed on saturday is a difference in body types. These kids from the Gophers are pound for pound in incredible shape. I compare them to Bison wrestlers and there is a difference. I'm not sure why that is. Better facilities ? Different focus in weight training ? It just seemed like most of them had really thick chests. Anyone else notice this ?

Being in incredible (looking) shape alone in wrestling doesn't mean jack. Technique and experience is everything. Couple technique and experience with being built like a rock, well then watchout. I could give you 50 examples at the HS level of guys at first glance didn't look like much, until their much better built opponents found themselves counting ceiling tiles and not sure how it happened. I'm guessing (cause I wasn't at the Open) that the MN guys have both, or they wouldn't be wrestling for the Gophers.

Exactly right. The maroon singlet tells you they have it all really. Was just wondering a little bit about the difference in physique because it seemed like they had a little something extra and can't really figure out why a kid going to the U of M working out all the time, and a kid going to NDSU working out all the time, still maybe look a little bit different. Had alot of fun there though because I finally got to see a kid wrestle that I had wanted to see for awhile now so that was cool. Although in the final, he was counting ceiling tiles under a maroon uni.
