One thing I'll say about them - they've been talking about NDSU since they opened practice.

Here's a sampling:

Boy it sure would be nice if our local media covered our Bison practices up to the first game like these guys are doing. Looks like they get more than the standard 1 article a week that we do. It really wouldn't take much. Even a blog that's updated daily. Wishful thinking i guess.

I liked the way the articles were written, some facts mixed in with opinion and some casual discussion. Sometimes Kolpack can be too vanilla. A story a day in the paper along with blog entries 1 or 2 times a day would be OK with me......I know its not realistic, but as a fan I can ony wish!
BTW, anyone hear if the AP game is close to a sellout?

tony

I'll take the Forum's coverage over Austin Peay's (although AP's is awfully good).

Be nice if the Bismarck Tribune would run a story about NDSU more than once a decade though (seriously, I think they've run more stories about Southern Illinois than NDSU this month).

Govs coach Rick Christophel had music blaring through the sound system to simulate some of the noise they will hear in the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., home to season-opening opponent North Dakota State.
"There were two things we were trying to do, we're getting ready to go to the dome, it's going to be loud and a lot of these kids have never experienced that.

The BT does a good job at covering local and high school sports, which I like. But I agree, they could do a better job covering Bison athletics.

The athletic department should ship in a full team's supply of these for first time visitors such as AP. It would save wear and tear on the turf, and possibly on the laundry machines.

And you do know that in all of the previous years Bohl has coached the Bison the second teamers played in exactly one game, last year against MVSU. So, I doubt that will happen, especially since this new O needs some reps to get rhythm, but beyond that, playing subs until the last two minutes of the game after the Bison are up by 3-4 TDs is what this staff is all about. They simply don't take chances. After all, that is why Mertens is so inexperienced.

will it be different this year with the prospect of the playoffs and needing the first teamers fresh?

What team have you been following the last 5 years? I can name at least 10 games.

FYI, Mertens wasn't the backup QB until 2007 so Parsons was the one who got the snaps prior. There wasn't exactly that many opportunities to put Mertens in last year.

With all due respect to our first opponent I think they will have tough time with our O-line and running game. They seem to be a little light. From their roster........below is a listing of their DE, DL and DT height and weight

DE 6-0 248 Jr.
DE 6-3 246 RSo.
DE 6-2 252 So.

Any plans on making the game? If not we do have a pretty good webcast service at gobison.com. You can buy single games, quality is pretty good. The audio is NDSU media and their usually not too homerish so I would think that it's not horrible to listen too if your an fan of the opposing team.

If the 283 and 290 guys are the starting DTs, they'll be okay. Our DT/NG run 280 and 290, Yuen is 280, other NG back up is like 270 and they all do fine against bigger OL. Most of their DEs aren't that much different than Compton in height and weight.

Welcome to the board....Coach Bohl will have the Bison ready for each game. Every team we play has NDSU maked on the calender. But after reading about the Govs....no disrespect....I don't think the Govs are even close to the Bison. But anything can happen on any given saturday....if the Bison come out flat and have a lot of turnovers...then the Govs could have a chance. I truely believe it will be a 3-4 td game for the Bison....if the Govs let the crowd get into it....it will be worse. I could be wrong and will admit it if I am.:)

Good luck AP

Well, if the Fargo forum doesn't want to give us enough coverage, I guess I'll have to pick up the slack.

A closer look at the defense.

DE Chris Newell 6'4" 231 Junior. 2nd year starter. Had 10 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. A former wide reciever that went to linebacker, then defensive end. Fast.

DT Antonio Faulkner 6'2" 290 Sophomore. Started 7 of 11 games his freshman year. Really came on at end of year like Gratzek did.

DT Dee Peeler 6'2" 283 Junior. Best interior lineman. He is a third year starter. Had 4 games last year with 5 or more tackles.

DE Nick Clark 6'0" 259 Junior. 2nd year starter had 7.5 TFL last year.

MLB Daniel Becker 6'3" 241 Junior. Comming off an injury, the Govs best linebacker had 19 tackle performance

SLB Kit Hartfield 6'0" 200 Junior. 3rd year starter. led team in tackles in Becker's absence last year.

WLB Daniel Swenson 6'2" 208 Sophomore. only new starter

CB Kevis Buckley 5'10" 175 Junior. 3rd year starter. INT leader last two years

CB LaDarius Davis 5'9" 165 Junior. 2nd year starter, has seen action in every game of his career.

SS Jason Vanatta 5'10" 185 Senior. 3rd year starter

FS Tremayne Towsend 5'9" 180 Junior. 2nd year starter, moved from cornerback to free safety his sophomore year. Has cornerback speed.

A few thoughts. This is a defense that has a lot of experience playing together, I noticed that there are a lot of juniors on this defense (8) and only 1 senior. Next year, this defense should be the best in their conference. Although they have a lot of players coming back, they seem to have little or no depth and this is going to kill them against the Bison. NDSU line outweighs these guys by an average of 35+ pounds and with only 2 interior linemen above 270, quarter number 4 is going to be a very long one. The Defensive ends appear to have speed. With Newell being a former wide reciever, he should be lightning quick as a defensive end. There is no doubt that MLB DBecker is a stud. The Govs really missed him last year and the Bison will need to account for him on every play. Overall, this defense is a little undersized and tackling Roehl all game long is going to take it's toll.

A closer look at the offense to follow...

Ok...Here is the offense

A closer look at the offense

LT Cage Major 6'5" 275 Senior. 2nd team OVC, enters his 4rth year as a starter.

LG Kevin Little 6'1" 310 Sophomore. New starter. Little was a walk on in 2006

C Travis Dumke 6'2" 285 Senior. 22 strait starts. He is considered the best AP lineman.

RG Justin Cunningham 6'1" 285 Junior. Comming off of an injury that limited him to only 5 games last year. seems to be back to 100%

RT Tyler Trent 6'1" 270 Was a walk on last year and blossomed. Smart, member of honor roll and had a 4.0 in spring semester.

TE Jack Hoeh 6'5" 233 Sophomore. Played in all 11 games last year. He added 20 lbs to his frame since last year. (and he is still at 233?)

WR Adrian Mines 6'4" 175 sophomore. 2nd on team in receptions last year. Tall and fast but only 175 lbs.

WR Lanis Frederick 5'11" 175 Senior. AP's best wide receiver. He had 77 receptions his sophomore year and over 1000 yards.

QB Gary Orr 6'1" 210 Junior. Was a walk on. The #3 QB at start of the year, he really came on and was "Mr Clutch" off bench. Started 3 games last year. Can throw the ball deep.

RB Theo Townsend 5'8" 186 Junior. Wild card. Was a trasnfer from Alabama and played in all 12 games his freshman year. Tranferred prior to the 2006 season but was inelligible to play (tranfer issues) until middle of 2007 season. This kid has breakaway speed.

FB Jontamion Forrest 5'11" 218 RS Freshman. Rushed for 1881 yards on 207 carries (9.1 ypc) and 28 TD his senior year. Was 2006 Jackson Sun West Tennesee player of the year.

A few thoughts The AP lineman have three comming back but are a little undersized. They do have a monster sophomore that will see time listed at 6'7" 358 lbs. They are very thin on the offensive line. The starting TE put on 20 lbs in the off season yet is now only at 233? That is still a little thin for a tight end that is 6'5". QB Gary Orr was very good off the bench and is being pushed by TC Jennings , a transfer from Arkansas St. The most proven member of this squad is Frederick at wide receiver. He is good. At 6'4" Mines has all the tools to go and get the ball against a 5'8" corner...(but that is what the guy from the U of Minnesota thought) The biggest question is going to be at runningback. Townsend saw action in 12 games as a freshman at Alabama so the kid has talent, however, if he transfered prior to the 2006 season yet wasn't ready to go until the middle of 2007....Hmmm??? Anyway, he has breakaway speed. At Fullback, the redshirt freshman looks good (on paper). They appear to be touting him as the short yardage-goal line guy. This offense is maybe a little better than a lot of us Bison fans would like to give them credit for. It appears that depth is going to be the big problem for these guys.

Our DT/NG are 280 and 298....Yuen is listed at 295 and Phillips is up to 276 ...just splitting hairs, but I get your point.

That' hilarious. Yuen was listed at 280-285 when he signed, the same weight when he came and first got on the roster, now 295. Sometime I would like real heights and weights be a requirement by the NCAA.

Maybe we should have each team get their heights and weights cleared by the NCAA H&W clearinghouse.

So, what happened to Theo Townsend, the transfer from Alabama? Is he having eligibility troubles again? He was listed after the spring practice as being in the number one tail back spot. Jeff Lyle started the last scimmage on the first team offense. He had some pretty good games for AP at fullback last year. He was moved to tailback in the spring.

Basically, the Bison feel the game should be over at halftime (at least if you read the messageboards).

Better start a prediction thread. I wouldn't expect the game to be over by halftime unless NDSU gets some defensive scores. AP's defense looks very quick to me and that could cause some problems.

Dear Mr. James Horne,

Thank you for your wonderful coverage on your local team the Austin Peay Govenors. I have greatly enjoyed your well thought out, detailed and frequent articles about the upcoming football season at Austin Peay. I have recieved more information about the upcoming game of NDSU vs AP from your stories then I have our own local paper in Fargo. Mr Horne, the Austin Peay fans are lucky to have you, and I think I speak for all of them when I say, keep up the good work.

Boy, it sure is nice being a fan of the team that is the heavy favorite. How spoiled are we ? I mean, to know week in and week out that we have a really really good chance of winning the game regardless of who we play or where we play them (except for maybe a handful of FBS schools) is really something I enjoy.
I remember last year at the opener against SFA and Walker throws like what 4 or 5 picks and Tyler fumbles and everything on paper says we probably should have not won that game and we did anyway. We could come out Thursday and Mertens could play a pretty lousy game, O could have like 4 or 5 turnovers, and the D could give up Rhomar w/ SHSU like numbers and I still like our chances.
Anyway, haven't really posted for awhile and figured I'd jump in and share in the overall excitement everyone is feeling. 1st time season ticketholder, long time supporter, and really ready for the season to start. So let's be loud on thursday and I'll see ya'll there.

Well, thats your opinion. Thats why there are message boards, people can give they're "opinions." You think the Bison are going to roll over the Govs. Good. You're a fan of your team and I would hope you think your team is going to win.

And I do believe our fans know what we're getting into. We've played tough games in the past and almost all our wins last season we're tough wins so it will be nothing new to the Govs.

I will say that I believe the Bison will get the "W" but I think the Govs will make it hard for them to get it and it will be a very good test for the Govs going into Georgia Southern next week.

I expect Bohl to keep things pretty vanilla, I doubt he wants to show too much before the Wyo game. Just like the Northeastern game of a few years ago the line and backs are so good that Bohl should be able to get away with it.

I think the defense will shine though, the unit looks so good on paper and I can't wait to see it in action.

Actually, I would rather see us win by 3-4 TD's and play the 2nd and 3rd stringers, rather than win by 4 or 5 TD's with only a couple 2nd stringers getting any significant playing time. Of course if we could win by the 4 or 5 TD margin AND play most of the bench, well.............:D :D :D :D

Margin of victory only 2 TD's TransAm? Only putting it away in the fourth Quarter? Can you be any more conservative? I guess you want to be able to say 2 TD victory guaranteed.........
My prediction......Bison victory margin of at least 31 points. No way APSU stops Bison ground game. Heck, if all NDSU did was run the ball the outcome would pretty much be the same. Score prediction NDSU 41 - APSU 10

Our O-line is going to open huge holes for the rb's. 30-40 lb difference is huge....I think we will have 300+ rushing yds. PP and DJ should get plenty of carries and Jangula is going to annhilate their d-ends and lbs.

TA you are probably right with a sloppy 1-2 quarters but the 2nd half will be all Bison.

Bison 49-13....or worse:D :D
You and TransAm have no confidence! BS on the sloppy first half......give me a break!

We are not the team were were last year at this time. *Strongly emphasize at this time* Even with Walker, our first game was sloppy at best. Our first game usually is. They are going to ease this team in. We will not hang a ton of points the first half. This isn't about confidence. This is just coming to terms with where I believe the Bison are at this time. They will be better the second half of the game, and much better the second game.

Isn't that only for conference games?
last year we shook hands with WIU at their house and we weren't in the conference...
