Day 1 Loss to Jordan. Good showing from the Herd.

Jordan 67-63 AIA

Veteran Zaid Alkhas made two crucial threes in overtime as Jordan defeated Athletes in Action 67-63 after the extra session and opened its quest for the second consecutive Jones Cup crown with an inspiring win.

Jordan made two free-throws in the last five seconds in regulation to send the game into overtime, during which it made three of its seven threes in the game.

Jordan: J.A. Shmala 20p+6rb, Zaid Alkhas 19p+7rb, T. Almaaytah 7p+10rb
AIA: Benjamin Woodside 14p, Wellington Smith 11p+9rb, Brett Winkelman 10p+7rb, Jamel McLean 11p+10rb, Da'Sean Butler 6p+7rb

Game 3: Winks Leads the way for AIA whose record is now 2-1.

AIA 98-67 Australia (48-40)

For a while, everyone thought the high schoolers from Down Under might humiliate a collection of U.S. college players. That did not happen. AIA used a 26-7 third quarter to turn a close game into a rout, closing out the game with a 31-point win.

It was a pretty nice present for AIA coach Dave Bliss on the day of his 30th wedding anniversary.

Australia led 24-18 in the end of the first period. Bliss decided to go small and it paid dividends. Australia failed to keep up with the AIA and could only watch the Americans pull the game away.

AIA: Brett Winkelman 16p, Dane Brumagin 14p, Wellington Smith 14p
Australia: M. Dellavedova 15p, Bradley Simpson 11p

Really interesting team these guys are on and fun to watch their progress. Here is the AIA page with blogs from the players. Nothin from Ben or Brett but a mention of Brett and a some pics. http://aia.com/teamblogs
I'm sure at some point one of them will blog!

And not to steal herd's thunder, but AIA is 4-1 after throttling Kazakhstan
http://www.taiwanhoops.com/2008/07/day-5-emus-beat-jordan-in-ot.html

Athletes in Action kept improving as the quickly-assembled team got familiar with each other and now working as a cohesive unit. On the opposite side, Kazakhstan gradually lost its steam with each passing day.

Combine these two factors together, you get a lopsided game like AIA's 86-69 win today. The U.S. representative improved to tournament-best 4-1.

The Americans used a 22-9 second quarter to make the game out of reach. Brett Winkelman of North Dakota State had another brilliant outing with 19 points to go with 10 boards while Jamel McLean (Xavier) also turned in a double-double with 19 and 10.

Tourguide . . . good work! Like you, I'm just trying to get everyone on board with the great mission in Tiawan. Woody and Winks are some class guys and their mission needs to be promoted back home.

The boys are also showing a class on the court. One of them has been the top scorer in almost every game. I'm trying to find out if one of the ESPN channels will carry the finals next weekend, if indeed our boys are a 1 or 2 seed. As it looks right now, they should be.

Winks Blog

http://aia.com/TeamBlogs/post/Jones-Cup-team-continues-to-roll!.aspx

If you haven't figured it out yet, this trip appears to be more about religious beliefs then basketball and that is evident in the blogs.

My favorite part of his blog
"The food here is great, a little different from what we are used to, but still really good. Although I do have to admit that a lot of the guys are getting a little sick of seafood. Some guys are looking forward to getting a juicy American burger when we get back. Personally, I love seafood, but I don't think you will see me at a red lobster any time soon ;) "

Also he states they beat Eygpt moving their record to 5-1. The Taiwan hoops page has not updated the standing or posted an stats yet!

Looks like the USA team is going to get another crack at Jordan - they're meeting in the championship game.

http://www.timeswv.com/wvu_sports/local_story_200015700.html

From the Times West Virginian:

A pair of North Dakota State teammates led the AIA to its seventh straight win. Brett Winkelman and Ben Woodside combined for 57 points. Winkelman had 31 points and eight rebounds and Woodside 26 points, five assists and two steals.
