And what a contract it was:

Mays’ $2.6M deal sinks in

At 246 pounds of power, it’s hard to imagine something seeming big to Joe Mays. But that’s exactly how it felt when he signed his NFL contract.
The former North Dakota State linebacker closed a four-year deal worth reportedly about $2.6 million last week with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Neither he nor his agent, Dave Butz, would disclose the details, but Mays is slated to earn $295,000 in base salary this year, $385,000 in 2009, $470,000 in 2010 and $555,000 in 2011 provided he makes the team every year....Read More

Couldn't happen to a better guy. You deserve it Joe. Make us proud.

$295,000/yr for your first job out of college. Not too shabby. Move the decimal point over a spot to the left and that was more in line with my first job.

Great news, but he still has to make the team.

I've never been happier for an athlete from NDSU. I think he'll not only make the team, in a year or two, he'll be a regular.

He's prolly an injury away from being a regular this year

There is an $895,000 difference between his base salary for the four years and the total contract amount. I wonder how much was for a signing bonus and how much are for incentives?

If you watch the Craig Bohl football show after the Central Michigan game it talks about Joe being a fan of the Chicago Bears and Eagles.

Yea I know he's not just tooting some horns but a fan of the Eagles coming from Chicago?

That's all I meant with that statement.

If you watch the interview with the Eagles, he states that he really idolizes Donovan McNabb. Now that has to be an awesome feeling to practice and talk with someone you idolize in the NFL.

I couldn't imagine suiting up next to Joe Montana. I think I would get chills everytime. Anywho, enough of this. Joe Mays will do great in Philly. I have a sneaking suspicion.

The party starts for Joe tomorrow. 4:30 PM Rookies start and it is live on the Eagles website. Some interesting insight I found today:

Camp Countdown: Middle Linebacker

The Eagles selected North Dakota State bullet Joe Mays in the fifth round in April's NFL Draft. Mays should figure to contribute on special teams as he waits for reps on defense, much like similarly built former Eagle Keith Adams.

BATTLE TO WATCH: Mays vs. Togafau

Mays, a project, seems like a guy who could use a season on the practice squad. But he's made great strides in workouts and could have the upper had on Togafau. Either way, the guy who wins the job will make his primary contributions on special teams.

GO GET THEM JOSEPH! ;)

Found this today too. I also talked to Joe today and he is ready to start practice tomorrow. I told him were all behind him and to go take care of business: ;)

Mays Is Ready To Put The Pads On

Joe Mays has definitely brought the most luxuries from home out of the rookies. He also has brought his powerful tackles and hard hits, so you know he is looking forward to putting on the pads.

"I'm very excited," Mays said. "I get a chance to show why they drafted me. My physical play, my toughness and how I play football is why they got me here. I just want to show it."

The camp will be brutal, as Mays was informed from those who have been through it all before, and still he is looking forward to it.

The fact that Mays will be trapped in a dorm for three weeks makes him feel like a freshmen in college again, but with a new set of concerns.

His biggest fear now is not making the team.

"But I know if I come out and handle my business I will make the team, so I'm going to leave that far in the back of my mind for right now," said Mays.

Thanks for the update. I am happy to hear Joe is ready to get it done!!!! You will have to keep us updated here on what the experience is like for him.

I am guessing we are not going to here much about him through The Forum following him through this experience. But I won't go on a :ranting:

Best of luck Joe and make the Bison Proud!!!!!!!!

His web page with 7 different pics from him signing a little girl's shirt to finding a helmet that fits. Is that helmet for sale yet? I guess it's not game-used yet anyway. :D ;)

B1SON- you have to photoshop a facemask on Joe's helmet- every time I see one of your posts it looks like Joe is the new Eagles stock car driver. :hide:

No matter - it'll probably just end up sticking out of some quarterback's chest anyway... either that, or he bit it off so the coaches can see exactly who's on the field... :D

If you look at Joe's roster page you'll see a new picture of him bearing down on Desean Jackson:

If it wasn't just 7-on-7 drills I would not want to be in Jacksons place.

Nice find Civil06.......Rep points to you!
BTW, both articles were good, but the writer of the first article makes it sound like NDSU is nothing in the football world, calling NDSU unimpressive. He could have stated it better by saying NDSU is a DII / DI-AA (FCS) school that has great winning tradition but is not like a big DI-A (FBS) school.....

I love how Joe says that (paraphrasing) he grew up and became a man while in Fargo. There's no doubt about that and it was a treat to watch his progression.

SD, you're correct. They really didn't paint NDSU as a great place to play. Joe will show them some Bison football when hitting starts.

"He's one of those guys who, when you turn on the film, he's making plays all over the place. A very explosive hitter," coach Andy Reid said. "He's a football player. I don't care what the level is. If you put on the film and see a guy dominating, you better look at him closely. That's what he did - he dominated."

"I don't think his forte is seven on seven," Reid said dryly yesterday, referring to the noncontact drills that continue today and Friday. "I would think he's looking forward to when we put pads on."

Reid smiled, and it just might be that the coach is looking forward to that, too.

WOW! Those are some impressive words coming from an impressive man. Keep working hard Joe, you deserve it. ;)

"Saturday marked the first practice with players in full pads with "live" hitting situations. One player, in specific, turned heads today with his thunderous hits. Rookie LB Joe Mays stands only 5-11, 245 pounds, but packs quite a punch when it comes to stuffing the run."

Way to go Joe!
