Yikes. Fully half the conference is under the 925 minimum. It's nice to see we're on top, though. I bet the small number of graduating seniors the last couple of years has helped a lot.

The NCAA member colleges and universities have adopted a comprehensive academic reform package designed to improve the academic success and graduation of all student-athletes.

The centerpiece of the academic reform package is the development of a new academic measurement for sports teams, known as the Academic Progress Rate, or APR.

Basically, this what the NCAA did to keep schools from abusing academics in the name of athletics. The higher the score the better off your school is, if your under 925 you start getting punished(loss of scholarships, practices, etc), and eventually if you don't correct your APR you will face a postseason ban(I think it is three consecutive years under 900 but not sure).

There are two categories of penalties from the Academic Progress Reports(APR): Immediate(below 925) and Historical(below 900). Under immediate penalties, if you scored under 925 in a particular sport, you may lose up to 10% of your scholarships in that sport the following year. Under historic penalties, you get a public warning after one year, a post-season ban in that sport after three consecutive years below 900, and your entire athletic department faces sanctions after four consecutive years below 900 in a sport.

BTW, a 925 equals approx a 60% graduation rate over a 4-year period. A 1000 is a perfect score. In 2006-07, NDSU was below 925 in baseball(922) and wrestling(918), but is exempt from penalties for now because the squad sizes in those sports have been statistically too small. That exemption will expire once four full years of data has been collected(next year?). I'm not sure about baseball, but I suspect the mass defection we had just after the DI move is what caused the low wrestling score. That should disappear in the next year or two as the rolling 4-year period passes it by.

So what is going to happen to teams like SDSU, WIU, and Centenary? Will they lose scholarships for this fall? Interestingly enough, these are the same teams that are bottom of the pack in the Summit.

SDSU: no penalties; not enough data has been collected yet(just like us in baseball and wrestling)
WIU: no; just a warning next year.
Cent: yes; they will lose 1 men's basketball scholarship next year
SUU: yes; they will also lose 1 men's basketball scholarship next year
IUPUI: no; they're off the hook for the moment because their overall graduation rate is so low

So the immediate penalties apply to the 08-09 year? If so, Tim Miles loses two scholarships at CSU?

Apparently. I was confused by the title of the penalty page, but it lists 218 teams, which is the same number as in the accompanying article. I don't know if all of the penalties will be enforced, or if some appeal is possible. I think Tim's job got a little bit harder. More so, the program will suffer for a while because of the rolling four-year period.
